About MDR Fernsehen

MDR Fernsehen

MDR Fernsehen is the regional public television channel of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), the public broadcaster for the German states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. Broadcasting from Leipzig, it is one of the seven regional "third programmes" of the ARD network, and it is distinctive for serving three federal states at once, with dedicated evening news magazines for each of them.

Overview

MDR Fernsehen is the television screen of central Germany. Its parent corporation, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, was created after German reunification to serve the three states that had been part of the former East Germany's southern tier, and the channel reflects that tri-state remit in its structure: while much of the schedule is shared, the early-evening regional news splits into three state editions, so viewers in Dresden, Magdeburg, and Erfurt each see their own region's stories. The channel broadcasts in German, with some programming in Upper Sorbian, the Slavic minority language spoken in parts of Saxony.

The channel is financed by Germany's broadcasting licence fee and carries no commercial advertising. Its remit is public service: regional news and information, documentaries, culture, entertainment, and sports from and for central Germany. Alongside its own productions, MDR Fernsehen contributes programmes to the national ARD channel Das Erste and to ARD's joint digital channels, and it draws on the shared ARD programme pool for part of its schedule.

MDR's headquarters in Leipzig anchor a broadcaster that also operates a family of radio stations — including MDR Sachsen, MDR Jump, MDR Kultur, MDR Klassik, MDR Tweens, MDR Sputnik, and the news channel MDR Aktuell — making the television channel one element of a comprehensive regional media house.

History

MDR Fernsehen went on air on 1 January 1992, the same day its parent corporation began broadcasting. Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk had been established in May 1991 as the public broadcaster for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, and the new television channel replaced the DFF Länderkette, the regional programme chain of the former East German broadcaster Deutscher Fernsehfunk, which ceased to exist with reunification. The launch was therefore part of the wholesale reconstruction of eastern Germany's media landscape after 1990.

The early years were shaped by the task of building a broadcaster from scratch: new studios, new staff, and a new editorial culture oriented toward democratic public-service journalism. Leipzig became the television headquarters, with state studios in Dresden, Magdeburg, and Erfurt providing the regional newsrooms that still feed the channel's state editions today. Over the 1990s the channel grew into a full-day service and established the programme brands that define it, from its regional news magazines to its long-running documentary and entertainment formats.

A high-definition simulcast followed in the 2010s as part of the industry-wide transition, and the channel's output has been progressively integrated into MDR's online media library. The channel celebrated its thirtieth anniversary in 2022, by which point it was firmly established as the most-watched regional television service in its three states and a significant production centre for the ARD network as a whole, contributing drama series, documentaries, and entertainment formats to the national schedule.

Programming and Content

The defining feature of MDR Fernsehen's schedule is its tri-state regional news. Every evening at 19:00 the channel splits into three editions: Sachsenspiegel for Saxony, Sachsen-Anhalt heute for Saxony-Anhalt, and the Thüringen Journal for Thuringia. Each edition reports on its state's politics, economy, and society, and together they give the channel a regional news density that few other German television services match. The day's news is rounded out by MDR Aktuell editions and by the shared morning and midday programming of the ARD network.

Documentaries and factual programming are a second pillar. The long-running science and knowledge magazine Echt, the history series MDR Zeitreise, and nature and animal documentaries — including the popular Leipzig Zoo series Elefant, Tiger & Co. — exemplify the channel's factual output. Social reportage, consumer magazines, and health programming such as Hauptsache Gesund address the practical concerns of the channel's audience, while the crime series Polizeiruf 110 and other drama productions made by MDR for the ARD network appear on the channel alongside acquired series.

Entertainment includes talk and variety formats such as Riverboat, the long-running talk show produced in Leipzig, comedy and cabaret with central German roots, and family programming including the beloved East German children's institution Unser Sandmännchen. Sports coverage features regional competitions and reports, and the channel's schedule is rounded out by repeats of popular ARD productions and by the shared programming that all third channels carry.

A distinctive editorial note is the channel's attention to the history and transformation of eastern Germany: documentaries about the GDR era, the reunification period, and the region's industrial and cultural heritage recur in the schedule, reflecting an audience for whom recent history remains living memory.

Coverage and Audience

MDR Fernsehen's broadcast area covers Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, where it is available via digital terrestrial television (DVB-T2), cable, and satellite. Like the other ARD third programmes it is carried on cable networks throughout Germany and broadcast free-to-air via satellite, so it is receivable nationally and across much of Europe. Wikipedia lists mdr.de/tv as the channel's official website, and programme information, livestreams, and on-demand video are provided through MDR's online services.

Within its three states the channel is among the most-watched television services, with its regional news magazines regularly drawing large audiences in the early evening. Its audience reflects the demographics of central Germany and of regional public television generally: strong among viewers interested in regional affairs, with a broad age range anchored by loyal evening news viewers. Detailed ratings are published by the industry's measurement bodies.

The channel's availability through the ARD Mediathek and MDR's own media library has extended its reach to on-demand viewers, including younger audiences and former residents of the three states who follow regional news from elsewhere in Germany. The Upper Sorbian programming serves one of Germany's recognised national minorities, giving the channel a cultural-preservation role alongside its journalistic one.

Ownership

MDR Fernsehen is owned and operated by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, a public-law broadcasting corporation headquartered in Leipzig with state studios in Dresden, Magdeburg, and Erfurt. MDR is one of the nine member corporations of the ARD consortium, contributing programming to Das Erste and to ARD's joint digital channels.

As a public broadcaster, MDR has no private shareholders and no commercial ownership. It is established under an interstate treaty between Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, overseen by a broadcasting council representing socially relevant groups from all three states together with an administrative council, and financed principally by the Rundfunkbeitrag, the nationwide broadcasting contribution. This structure is designed to guarantee editorial independence from governments and commercial interests alike.

Within the ARD system, MDR is a major production centre, particularly for drama, documentaries, and entertainment. It participates in the joint ventures KiKA — notably, the children's channel is headquartered in Erfurt — as well as 3sat, arte, and Phoenix, and its radio stations serve the three states with a mix of regional and format programmes.

Digital Presence

MDR Fernsehen's digital home is integrated into MDR's web presence; Wikipedia lists mdr.de/tv as the channel's official website. Schedules, news articles, and background features are published there, and the channel streams live online while its programmes are available on demand through MDR's media library and the joint ARD Mediathek.

MDR maintains active social media channels for the corporation, for MDR Aktuell, and for individual programme brands, distributing news clips, documentary highlights, and regional stories to audiences on the major platforms. The broadcaster has invested in digital-first formats aimed at younger viewers, complementing the linear channel's traditional audience.

For viewers outside the three states — including the large number of people who grew up in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, or Thuringia and now live elsewhere — the livestream and on-demand catalogue keep MDR Fernsehen's regional journalism and programming accessible wherever an internet connection is available, subject to the usual rights restrictions on acquired content.
