About MDR Kultur

MDR Kultur

MDR Kultur – Das Radio is the cultural radio programme of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), broadcasting across Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. Launched on 1 January 1992 as "MDR Kultur", renamed "MDR Figaro" from 1 January 2004 to 2 May 2016, and then restored to its original name with the subtitle "Das Radio", it is a cultural entertainment programme with pop, rock, oldies, jazz, and classical music — alongside background reports, entertainment shows, and live concert broadcasts. It reaches 198,000 listeners (Media-Analyse II/2026).

Overview

MDR Kultur is produced at the MDR's radio headquarters in Halle (Saale) and broadcasts on FM, cable, satellite, DAB+, and webradio. Programme direction is held by Christina Herßebroick (acting head of the MDR's "Culture and Youth" editorial department). The MDR intendant is Ralf Ludwig.

History

MDR Kultur was one of the seven radio programmes with which the MDR began at midnight on 1 January 1992 — the broadcaster's culture wave from the start. For its first twelve years it broadcast under the MDR Kultur name, offering the classic public-radio cultural mix: classical music, jazz, chanson, folk, background reporting, and entertainment.

On 1 January 2004, the programme was restructured and renamed "MDR Figaro". The Figaro era emphasised both western art music and pop music — an attempt to make the culture wave more accessible, less forbidding, and more musical in the broad sense. The name, borrowed from Mozart's and Rossini's barber, signalled wit and accessibility rather than high-cultural solemnity.

On 2 May 2016, the MDR reversed the rename: the station became "MDR Kultur" again, with the subtitle "Das Radio" added to distinguish the radio programme from the MDR's cultural offerings on television and the internet. The programme itself did not change in the 2016 switch — only the name. The twelve-year Figaro interlude thus stands as an experiment in cultural branding: an attempt to escape the perceived stuffiness of "Kultur" radio that ultimately concluded the original name had more equity.

The Figaro Experiment

The twelve years of "MDR Figaro" deserve examination, because they illuminate a dilemma every public cultural broadcaster faces: how do you keep "culture" from sounding like homework? By 2003, the MDR's management had concluded that "MDR Kultur" — accurate but austere — was repelling the very audience cultural radio needs to survive: the culturally curious who do not think of themselves as "Kultur" people.

The Figaro solution, launched 1 January 2004, had two parts. The name: Figaro, the barber of Seville, Mozart's and Rossini's quick-witted everyman — culture with a smile, the opposite of solemnity. The programme reform: greater emphasis on both western art music and pop music, a broader musical embrace that acknowledged listeners live in both worlds. The message was that cultural radio could be entertaining without being trivial.

Whether it worked is debatable. The audience did not transform; cultural radio's demographics are stubborn everywhere. And on 2 May 2016, the MDR reversed course — restoring "MDR Kultur" with the clarifying subtitle "Das Radio". The reversal suggests a conclusion: the "Kultur" name, for all its stuffiness, carries an equity that invented brands cannot match. Listeners looking for cultural radio search for "Kultur"; a barber's name, however charming, does not tell them what the station is. The Figaro era remains a case study in public-radio branding — and a reminder that clarity usually beats cleverness.

What Is a "Kulturwelle"?

MDR Kultur belongs to a distinct German broadcasting species: the "Kulturwelle" (culture wave). Every ARD broadcaster operates one — WDR 3, SWR Kultur, hr2-kultur, BR-Klassik's cultural programming, rbb Kultur — and each wrestles with the same remit: to be the broadcast home of high culture and the broader cultural conversation. The classic Kulturwelle mix is classical music (the backbone), jazz, chanson, folk, and world music, plus readings, radio drama, features, and cultural journalism.

MDR Kultur's variant — "cultural entertainment programme with pop, rock, oldies, jazz, and classical music" — is broader than the purist model. The inclusion of pop and rock acknowledges the MDR's specific history: an eastern German broadcaster whose audience's cultural socialisation included the GDR's rock scene, and whose culture wave must speak to a region where the distinction between "high" and "popular" culture was always more porous than in the West. The live concert broadcasts — including the MDR Sinfonieorchester and MDR Rundfunkchor — anchor the station in the classical tradition while the broader music mix keeps it accessible.

The Subtitle "Das Radio"

The 2016 addition of "Das Radio" ("The Radio") to the restored MDR Kultur name was not decorative. By 2016, the MDR — like every ARD broadcaster — was pursuing a trimedial strategy: the same brand across radio, television, and online. "MDR Kultur" as a brand now covered television documentaries, online features, and the radio wave; the subtitle distinguished the radio programme within the larger cultural offering. It is a small linguistic marker of a large structural shift: the era when a radio station was just a radio station is over, and every wave is now a cross-media brand.

Halle: The Culture Wave's Home

MDR Kultur's production base — the MDR's Hörfunkzentrale in Halle (Saale) — places the culture wave alongside the MDR's other music formats: MDR Jump, MDR Sputnik, MDR Klassik, and MDR Tweens are all made in Halle. For the culture wave, the Halle base means proximity to the MDR Sinfonieorchester's Leipzig concerts and to central Germany's dense cultural landscape: the Bauhaus in Dessau, Weimar's classical heritage, Leipzig's Gewandhaus and Bach tradition, Dresden's Semperoper. The station's concert recordings draw on this landscape, making MDR Kultur an acoustic map of one of Europe's richest cultural regions.

Cultural Radio's Audience

The 198,000 listeners (MA II/2026) tell a familiar story: cultural radio is a minority taste, but a loyal one. Kulturwelle audiences across Germany skew older, better educated, and culturally active — the concert-goers, theatre subscribers, and book buyers. They are also the audiences advertisers find hardest to reach elsewhere, which gives cultural radio an unexpected commercial value despite its small numbers. For the MDR, MDR Kultur's value is not in mass reach — the regional waves and MDR Jump provide that — but in remit fulfilment: a public broadcaster that did not offer cultural radio would not be a complete public broadcaster.

Programming

MDR Kultur is a public cultural entertainment programme. Beyond current background reports, it offers entertainment shows and live broadcasts such as concert recordings. The music spans jazz, chanson, classical, and folk — with pop, rock, and oldies in the broader mix that defines the station's "cultural entertainment" remit. For several hours each day, the schedule has been shared with the digital classical channel MDR Klassik, extending the classical offering.

Coverage and Audience

MDR Kultur broadcasts across Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia on FM, cable, satellite, DAB+, and webradio. Its 198,000 listeners (MA II/2026) reflect the loyal but limited audience for cultural radio — smaller than the music waves, but demographically distinctive and culturally engaged.

Ownership and Funding

MDR Kultur is operated by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, the public-law broadcaster for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia and a member of the ARD, headquartered in Leipzig with its radio centre in Halle (Saale). Like the MDR's other programmes, it is financed through the broadcasting licence fee. The MDR intendant is Ralf Ludwig.

Digital Presence

MDR Kultur's online presence is integrated into the MDR's digital platforms at mdr.de, with livestream, programme information, and podcasts. Because the official domain has not been independently load-verified, the website field of this profile is left empty pending verification.
