About ProSieben Fun
ProSieben Fun
ProSieben Fun is a German pay-television entertainment channel operated by the ProSiebenSat.1 group from Unterföhring near Munich. Launched on 3 May 2012, the channel is aimed at viewers aged roughly 14 to 39 and combines repeats of popular ProSieben and Sat.1 programmes with exclusive first-run series, films, action sports and music events. It is distributed as an encrypted simulcast service via cable and IPTV platforms across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and forms part of the Seven. One Pay TV portfolio alongside Sat.1 emotions and kabel eins classics.
Overview
ProSieben Fun occupies a distinctive niche in the German pay-TV landscape: rather than producing a fully original schedule, it curates the strongest entertainment brands of its free-TV sister channels and supplements them with premieres that cannot be seen on free television. The channel's self-styled spelling, ProSieben FUN, underlines its positioning as the youthful, event-driven extension of the ProSieben brand family. Its programme type is officially classified as a special-interest entertainment service (Spartenprogramm Unterhaltung).
The channel broadcasts in German around the clock in both standard definition (576i) and high definition (1080i). Reception is via DVB-C cable and IPTV; unlike its free-TV siblings, it has never been available unencrypted via satellite in Germany on a permanent basis. Current carriage includes MagentaTV, Vodafone's cable network, waipu.tv, Zattoo, Joyn Plus, Prime Video Channels, 1&1, NetCologne, Pÿur and M7 Deutschland, as well as platforms in Austria (Magenta Telekom, Canal+, HD Austria, DreiTV) and Switzerland (UPC Schweiz).
History
ProSiebenSat.1 announced the creation of two new pay-TV channels — ProSieben Fun and Sat.1 emotions — on 1 March 2012, and both went on air on 3 May 2012. The launch was part of a broader strategy to monetise the group's programme library and brands through subscription television, following the earlier success of kabel eins classics, which had been on air since 2006.
From the start, ProSieben Fun was carried as a simulcast channel on Deutsche Telekom's Entertain platform, Vodafone Kabel Deutschland, Unitymedia and other cable and IPTV providers. Until mid-2016 it was also distributed via satellite through Sky Deutschland. On 18 May 2016, however, ProSiebenSat.1 announced that it would discontinue distribution of its pay-TV channels on the Sky platform when the existing carriage agreement expired on 30 June 2016, citing "different strategic orientations" between the two companies. Since 1 July 2016 the channel has therefore been available exclusively via cable, IPTV and streaming distribution.
A visual relaunch took place on 21 April 2021, when ProSieben Fun received a new on-air logo and design, aligning it with the refreshed corporate identity of the Seven. One Entertainment Group. The operating company behind the channel is Seven. One Pay TV GmbH, a subsidiary of the Seven. One Entertainment Group, which itself belongs to ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE. The group's management for the pay-TV portfolio has included Nicole Agudo Berbel and Philipp Schaller in managing roles.
Programming
ProSieben Fun's schedule is built around three pillars: repeats of flagship ProSieben and Sat.1 shows, exclusive series premieres, and action sports.
The repeat pillar draws on some of the best-known entertainment brands in German television. Comedy and show formats such as TV total, Circus HalliGalli, Schlag den Raab, Schlag den Star, Switch reloaded and the Quatsch Comedy Club have all featured in the line-up, giving subscribers a second window to watch programmes that originally aired on free TV.
The premiere pillar has included German first-runs of international series. Among the titles premiered or prominently featured on the channel are Family Guy, Happy!, Vikings, Gotham, The Flash, Supergirl, Empire, Manifest, Bob's Burgers, Futurama, Grey's Anatomy, Chuck, Terra Nova, Being Human, Black Sails, Wilfred and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. This mix of US drama, comedy and animation is central to the channel's appeal to its young target demographic.
Action sports form the third and arguably most distinctive pillar. Since 2013 ProSieben Fun has positioned itself as a home for extreme and fun sports in German television. The centrepiece has been the X Games: the channel has broadcast the X Games world tour live, including the Winter X Games in Aspen and Tignes and the summer events in Foz do Iguaçu, Barcelona, Munich and Los Angeles. The Munich edition of the X Games was covered on location, while other events were presented from the channel's studio in Unterföhring, with presenters including Guido Heuber, Daniel Boschmann, Nico Zacek and Fabian Schwarz. Additional action-sports formats have included the TTR World Snowboard Tour, Red Bull X-Fighters, FISE, Bowl-a-Rama and the Dew Tour. The channel also covered the Munich MASH — the successor event to the X Games Munich — live from the Olympiapark in July 2014, and has aired live surfing events such as the Australian Open of Surfing and the US Open of Surfing.
Wrestling has been another long-running sports strand: since April 2014, ProSieben Fun has been the German television home of WWE's NXT format, with WWE Superstars also appearing in the schedule.
Coverage & Audience
ProSieben Fun is a subscription-only service, so it does not appear in the free-TV audience measurement published by AGF Videoforschung in the same way as its free siblings. Its relevance target group, as defined by the operator, is men aged 14 to 39 — a demographic prized by advertisers and pay-TV platform operators alike.
Geographically, the channel's broadcast area covers Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with localised carriage arrangements in each market. In Germany it is available through the major cable and IPTV platforms; in Austria via Magenta Telekom, Canal+ and HD Austria; and in Switzerland via UPC Schweiz, DreiTV and Teleclub-type offerings. The channel is not distributed via terrestrial television.
Ownership
ProSieben Fun is owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE, one of Europe's largest commercial broadcasting groups, headquartered in Unterföhring. Operational responsibility lies with Seven. One Pay TV GmbH, part of the Seven. One Entertainment Group, which manages the group's six pay-TV channels across five countries. Sister pay-TV channels include Sat.1 emotions and kabel eins classics; free-TV siblings include ProSieben, Sat.1, kabel eins, sixx, ProSieben Maxx, Sat.1 Gold and kabel eins Doku.
ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE is a publicly listed company. Its entertainment segment bundles the German-language TV business with the Joyn streaming platform, production activities under Seven. One Studios and digital commerce ventures.
Market Position
ProSieben Fun was conceived as the youth-oriented complement to Sat.1 emotions, the women's pay-TV channel launched on the same day in May 2012. Together with kabel eins classics, the three channels form the Seven. One Pay TV bouquet, which the group markets to cable and IPTV operators as a ready-made entertainment package. The strategy behind the bouquet is to extend the reach of the group's strongest free-TV brands into subscription households and to create additional exploitation windows for licensed US series and event programming.
The channel competes for carriage and attention with other German pay-TV entertainment services, including the RTL group's pay offerings and international brands distributed in Germany. Its distinctive selling points within that competitive set are the action-sports coverage — a genre largely absent from rival general-entertainment pay channels — and the exclusive series premieres that differentiate it from the free-TV ProSieben schedule. The decision to leave the Sky platform in 2016, taken jointly for all three Seven. One pay channels, shifted the channel's distribution emphasis decisively toward cable, IPTV and over-the-top streaming, a move that anticipated the broader migration of pay-TV consumption to app-based platforms in the years that followed.
Digital Presence
ProSieben Fun is closely integrated with Joyn, the streaming platform operated by ProSiebenSat.1, where the channel's live stream is available to Joyn Plus subscribers. The channel is also carried by third-party streaming aggregators such as Zattoo, waipu.tv and Prime Video Channels, reflecting the broader shift of pay-TV consumption toward app-based and smart-TV distribution.
