About Sächsische Zeitung
Sächsische Zeitung
The Sachsische Zeitung (SZ) is a German regional daily newspaper published in Dresden, the capital of Saxony. As the leading daily of Dresden and eastern Saxony, it serves one of Germany's most historically significant regions, published by the DDV Mediengruppe and, since 2024, part of the Madsack Mediengruppe following a landmark acquisition cleared by the Federal Cartel Office.
Overview
The Sachsische Zeitung appears Monday through Saturday and covers Dresden and eastern Saxony, including the districts of Bautzen, Gorlitz, Meissen, Sachsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge and the city of Chemnitz's eastern neighbors. Its circulation area encompasses the Elbe valley, the Saxon Switzerland national park region, and Upper Lusatia on the Polish and Czech borders.
The paper was founded in April 1946 through the merger of the Communist Sachsische Zeitung and the SPD's Volkstimme, in the Soviet occupation zone, and quickly became the information organ of the SED's Dresden district leadership. Through the GDR period it was one of East Germany's major regional dailies. After reunification it was privatized and developed into the market-leading paper of the Dresden region under western ownership.
In January 2024, the Bertelsmann group announced the sale of the DDV Mediengruppe, the SZ's publishing house, to the Madsack Mediengruppe of Hanover. The Federal Cartel Office cleared the acquisition in April 2024 on the condition that Madsack sell the Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten, the Dobelner Allgemeine Zeitung and the SachsenSonntag advertising paper to an independent third party, to prevent monopolization of the Dresden reader and advertising markets. The deal made the Sachsische Zeitung part of Germany's largest regional newspaper group in the east.
History
The Sachsische Zeitung was founded in April 1946 by merging the Communist Party's Sachsische Zeitung with the Social Democrats' Volkstimme, a forced unification characteristic of the Soviet zone's press policy. The paper became the SED district organ for Dresden, and through the GDR period it served eastern Saxony with a daily circulation that exceeded 500,000 copies, chronicling the region's industrial development, from Dresden's microelectronics to Gorlitz's railway works.
In 1966 the editorial staff moved into the newly built Haus der Presse in Dresden, which remains the paper's headquarters. The SZ's journalists worked within the SED's press system while producing the local reporting that made the paper indispensable to its readers.
Reunification brought privatization: in 1991 the paper was sold, and it eventually passed to the DDV Mediengruppe under Bertelsmann's ownership. The paper modernized its newsroom and printing, built the saechsische.de portal, and maintained its market leadership in the Dresden region against competition from the Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten and the Dresdner Morgenpost. The 2024 sale to Madsack, announced by Bertelsmann in January and cleared by the cartel office in April, placed the historic Dresden title within the Hanover group's growing Saxon portfolio.
Content
The Sachsische Zeitung's local journalism covers Dresden in depth: the city council, the Saxon state parliament and state government seated in Dresden, urban development in the Elbe metropolis, the technical university and its research institutions, and the cultural life of one of Germany's great baroque cities. District editions serve Bautzen, Gorlitz, Meissen, Pirna and the other towns of eastern Saxony.
The paper follows the region's economy: the semiconductor industry of "Silicon Saxony" around Dresden, the tourism of Saxon Switzerland, the structural challenges of Upper Lusatia's coal phase-out, and the cross-border relations with Poland and the Czech Republic. The coal transition in Lusatia, with its billions in structural aid and its political controversies, is a standing topic of the paper's reporting.
Culture pages cover Dresden's Semperoper, Staatsschauspiel, the Zwinger museums and the city's music festivals, while sports coverage follows Dynamo Dresden, the region's beloved football club, with passionate devotion. National and international news, opinion pages and service sections complete the program, with the paper's commentary reflecting the mainstream perspectives of a major regional daily.
The SZ's reporting on the Saxon Switzerland region combines tourism journalism with environmental coverage: the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, with their dramatic rock formations and hiking trails, are both a beloved recreation area and a sensitive national park landscape. The paper follows visitor management, conservation debates and the aftermath of the forest fires that have periodically devastated the region, serving readers for whom the mountains are a defining part of home.
Dresden's baroque heritage gives the paper's cultural journalism exceptional material: the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche, completed in 2005, the ongoing restoration of the Residenzschloss, and the debates over the city's architectural future are covered with the seriousness they command in a city where history is a living presence.
Coverage & Audience
The Sachsische Zeitung circulates in Dresden and eastern Saxony, a region of around 1.5 million inhabitants that includes the state capital, the Elbe valley cities, Saxon Switzerland and Upper Lusatia. Its readership spans the state capital's professionals, civil servants, researchers and cultural workers, the skilled workforce of Silicon Saxony, and the communities of the Lusatian towns navigating the coal phase-out.
As the paper of the Saxon state capital, the SZ reaches the state's political class: ministers, parliamentarians and administrators read the paper, and its state-politics reporting shapes debates in Dresden. The paper's eastern border location gives its audience a strong interest in Poland and the Czech Republic, and the SZ covers cross-border topics with a depth unusual for German regional dailies.
Print circulation has declined with the national trend, while saechsische.de has grown into the region's leading online news portal. The publisher pursues digital subscriptions and newsletters, competing for the attention of Dresden's young, digitally native population while serving its loyal print subscribers.
Ownership
The Sachsische Zeitung is published by the DDV Mediengruppe GmbH & Co. KG, the Dresden-based media group headquartered in the Haus der Presse. Since 2024 the DDV Mediengruppe has belonged to the Madsack Mediengruppe of Hanover, following Bertelsmann's sale of its shares, announced in January 2024 and cleared by the Federal Cartel Office in April 2024.
The cartel clearance came with conditions: to prevent monopolization of the Dresden and Dobeln reader and advertising markets, Madsack was required to sell the Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten, the Dobelner Allgemeine Zeitung and the SachsenSonntag advertising paper to an independent third party. The DDV's titles, including the Sachsische Zeitung and the Dobelner Anzeiger, thus joined Madsack's portfolio, which already included the Leipziger Volkszeitung and, through the Lubecker Nachrichten, the Ostsee-Zeitung.
Within the Madsack group, the SZ draws national content from the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland while the Dresden newsroom produces the region's journalism. The acquisition was presented by Madsack as a commitment to commercially funded regional journalism, while the cartel conditions reflected the authorities' concern for media diversity in Saxony.
Digital Presence
The saechsische.de portal is the leading online news source for Dresden and eastern Saxony, publishing breaking news continuously alongside e-paper access, photo galleries, videos and live coverage of regional events. Premium content sits behind a paywall, while breaking news and selected stories remain freely accessible.
Mobile apps deliver the e-paper and push notifications for Dresden news, and the paper maintains a strong social media presence, where stories about the state capital, Dynamo Dresden and Saxon Switzerland find large audiences. Newsletters on Dresden news, state politics and regional topics build direct digital relationships.
The digital strategy builds on the SZ's market leadership in the Dresden region: as the state capital's paper of record, it carries a brand authority that supports digital subscription growth. Within the Madsack group, the paper benefits from shared digital technology while maintaining the Dresden newsroom's responsibility for the journalism that defines the Sachsische Zeitung.
