About SR 1

SR 1

SR 1 — the "Europawelle" — is the pop and information radio of Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR), broadcasting from Saarbrücken for the Saarland. Launched on 2 January 1964 as "Europawelle Saar" — the SR's first programme converted into a music station, conceived as a competitor to Radio Luxemburg — it is one of Germany's oldest pop waves. With 251,000 listeners (Media-Analyse II/2026), it is the Saarland's leading public radio station.

Overview

SR 1 broadcasts from Saarbrücken across the Saarland on FM, DAB+ (block 9A), cable, satellite, and livestream — the Europawelle's successor, on air since January 1964. The SR intendant is Martin Grasmück (in office since 1 May 2021, re-elected June 2026 for a term beginning 1 May 2027). The programme is financed through the broadcasting licence fee.

History

SR 1's story begins on 2 January 1964 — the day the SR's medium-wave first programme transformed into "Europawelle Saar". The concept was combative: Radio Luxemburg — the commercial giant broadcasting from the Grand Duchy, the German youth's pop station — dominated the Saarland's airwaves. The SR's answer was a music station of its own: the "Europawelle" (Europe wave), the public alternative to Luxembourg's commercials.

The station succeeded beyond the Saarland: programmes like "Hallo Twen" (presented by Manfred Sexauer), "Die deutsche Schlagerparade" (presented by Dieter Thomas Heck), and "Drugstore 1421" became hits across the region. The Europawelle years were the SR's pop-cultural peak: the small Saarland broadcaster competing with Europe's most powerful commercial station — and winning listeners.

The station evolved into today's SR 1: pop music and information, the Saarland's day-accompanying wave. The "Europawelle" name persists in the institutional memory — the Europe wave from the border state, the station that faced Luxembourg and held its own.

The Luxembourg War

The "Europawelle Saar" was born as a weapon. Radio Luxemburg — broadcasting from the Grand Duchy on the legendary 208 metres medium wave (1440 kHz), the German-language service of Radio Luxembourg — was the pop-cultural superpower of postwar Germany: the Beatles, the Stones, the German schlager, all beamed from Luxembourg with a signal that covered the continent. In the Saarland, Luxembourg was next door — the signal overwhelming, the commercials irresistible, the youth lost to the Grand Duchy.

The SR's 2 January 1964 answer — converting its staid first programme into a music station — was the public broadcaster's counterattack: the "Europawelle" (Europe wave) against Luxembourg's Europe wave. The name itself was a challenge: Europe belongs to us too. The public station would play the pop, present the hits, keep the Saarland's youth — without the commercials.

The war's outcome was a draw that favoured the SR: Radio Luxemburg's German service eventually faded (the pop era ending, the frequencies changing), while the Europawelle endured — evolving into today's SR 1. The small Saarland broadcaster had faced the continent's commercial giant and survived: the border station's founding victory.

"Hallo Twen" and the Hit Parade

The Europawelle's golden age had its stars: Manfred Sexauer's "Hallo Twen" — the youth magazine that spoke the teenagers' language — and Dieter Thomas Heck's "Die deutsche Schlagerparade" — the hit parade that made the schlager respectable. Heck, who would become ZDF's "Hitparade" legend, learned the parade craft on the Saarland's airwaves; Sexauer became the voice of the Europawelle generation.

"Drugstore 1421" — the title itself a pop-cultural collage — completed the trinity: the shows that made the small station big beyond the Saarland. The Europawelle's signal crossed the borders — into Lorraine, Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate — and the programmes crossed with it: the Saarland's pop radio as the Greater Region's soundtrack. For a broadcaster serving one million people, the cross-border audience was the multiplier: the small state's big wave.

The SR: The Smallest Broadcaster

SR 1's parent — the Saarländischer Rundfunk — is the ARD's smallest member, and its history is the Saarland's. Radio began in 1929 under League of Nations administration; the Nazis created the Reichssender Saarbrücken in 1935; the French military built Radio Saarbrücken on 17 March 1946, renamed Saarländischer Rundfunk at the end of 1947. On 1 January 1957 — the day the Saarland joined the Federal Republic — the private Saarländischer Rundfunk GmbH became the public-law institution; the ARD membership followed in 1959.

The smallness is structural: one million inhabitants, the smallest licence-fee base, the smallest budgets. The SR's strategy has always been cooperation: the Südwest 3 television joint venture (1969, with SDR and SWF), the SR Fernsehen partnership with the SWR (1998, now 70% shared programming), the UnserDing youth cooperation with the SWR's DASDING (1999), the DAB+ block shared across the programmes. SR 1 is the exception — the SR's own mainstream wave, the programme the small broadcaster produces alone.

The Funkhaus Halberg — the Saarbrücken headquarters on the Halberg hill — is the broadcaster's fortress: the studios above the Saar valley, the transmitter on the hill, the "Mein Land. Mein Sender." slogan asserting the small state's media sovereignty. Martin Grasmück — intendant since 1 May 2021, the SR's own "Hausgewächs" (home-grown: volontariat, reporter, radio director), re-elected 8 June 2026 for a term starting 1 May 2027 — embodies the continuity: the small broadcaster led by its own.

The Youth Question: UnserDing and the 2026 Future

SR 1's mainstream position depends on the youth pipeline: the young listeners who graduate from the youth wave to the pop wave. The SR's youth offering — UnserDing, launched 1 March 1999 in cooperation with the SWR's DASDING, on the former SR 4 frequencies since January 2004 — has been the entry point: the young Saarlanders' station, the pop-rock socialisation.

The ARD reform era is reshaping the pipeline: reporting indicates a new joint youth radio of SR, hr, and SWR — "Dasding" as a tri-state brand — with a launch reported for 1 June 2026. The consolidation follows the ARD's logic: the small broadcasters pooling their youth offerings, the brands merging, the costs sharing. For SR 1, the tri-state youth wave is the future audience's antechamber: the young listeners socialised across three states, graduating to the Saarland's mainstream wave.

Note (October 2026): The tri-state youth radio's launch has been reported for 1 June 2026; details of the SR's participation continue to develop. The station's youth strategy should be read as in transition at the time of writing.

Programming

SR 1's format is pop music and information: the current hits, the Saarland news, the service and magazine content — the day's companion for the broad audience, from the morning commute to the evening drive. The station is the SR's mainstream wave — the broad audience, the day's companion, the pop-cultural home of the Saarland.

Coverage and Audience

SR 1 broadcasts on FM, DAB+ (block 9A, 120 kbps), cable, satellite, and livestream across the Saarland, with spillover into Lorraine, Luxembourg, and Rhineland-Palatinate. Its 251,000 listeners (MA II/2026) make it the SR's strongest radio programme and the Saarland's leading public station.

Ownership and Funding

SR 1 is operated by Saarländischer Rundfunk, the public-law broadcaster for the Saarland and an ARD member, headquartered at the Funkhaus Halberg in Saarbrücken. The SR's slogan is "Mein Land. Mein Sender." The programme is financed through the broadcasting licence fee. The SR intendant is Martin Grasmück.

Digital Presence

SR 1's online presence is integrated into the SR's digital platforms, with livestream, programme information, and podcasts. Because the official domain has not been independently load-verified, the website field of this profile is left empty pending verification.
