About Freies Wort

Freies Wort

The Freies Wort is the regional daily newspaper of South Thuringia, published in the independent city of Suhl by the Suhler Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, and serving the Thuringian Forest, the southern districts, the spa towns, and the Franconian border country. Founded in 1952 as Das Freie Wort, the paper is the largest regional daily in southern Thuringia, appearing in Suhl, in the districts of Hildburghausen and Sonneberg, and in parts of the districts of Schmalkalden-Meiningen, Ilm-Kreis, and Wartburgkreis. Its sold circulation, including the cooperating Meininger Tageblatt, is 35,696 copies, down 68.9 percent since 1998. The paper's editor-in-chief is Stephan Sohr, and its managing director is Andreas Heinkel. The paper's digital home is insuedthueringen.de, the portal uniting the southern Thuringian titles. The Freies Wort's position as the southern Thuringian daily, with its seven local news desks, gives it a unique role in the region's media landscape, and its local journalists ensure that the Thuringian Forest's news is covered by reporters rooted in the communities, from Suhl to the Bavarian border.

Overview

The Freies Wort appears on working days as a subscription daily in Berliner format, covering the southern Thuringian region from Suhl across the districts of Hildburghausen and Sonneberg to the edges of the Ilm-Kreis and the Wartburgkreis. The paper's Berliner format, the compact mid-size newspaper format, gives it a modern appearance that distinguishes it from the larger broadsheet dailies, and its working-day publication rhythm serves the region's readers from Tuesday through Saturday. The paper maintains seven local news desks: Suhl, Zella-Mehlis, Ilmenau, Sonneberg, Hildburghausen, Schmalkalden, and Bad Salzungen, giving the paper a dense network of local reporters across the Thuringian Forest, the Rhön foothills, and the Franconian border country.

The paper's distribution area is one of Germany's most distinctive regions: the Thuringian Forest's ski towns and spa resorts, Suhl's firearms industry, Sonneberg's toy manufacturing heritage, and the border country where Thuringia meets Bavaria. The Freies Wort's readership spans the former GDR district of Suhl, a region whose economic and demographic development since reunification has been among the most challenging in Germany, giving the paper's local reporting a particular responsibility. The region's identity, with the Rennsteig hiking trail, the winter sports traditions, and the Franconian influences of the southern districts, gives the paper's local journalism a distinctive character.

History

The paper was founded as an organ of the SED district leadership of the GDR's Suhl district. It first appeared on August 15, 1952, as Das Freie Wort, coinciding with the creation of the GDR's districts, with a circulation of 157,400 copies, making it the smallest of the SED's district papers with eight local desks at the time. The paper was renamed Freies Wort on March 9, 1956.

After reunification, the paper was privatized in 1991 and acquired by the Süddeutscher Verlag of Munich (70 percent) and the SPD's media holding Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft (30 percent). The paper's transformation from the SED's district organ into an independent regional daily followed the broader transformation of the East German press. In March 1996, the paper's staff demonstrated in Munich against a planned merger of the Freies Wort with the Südthüringer Zeitung, a plan that was ultimately not carried through, and the two papers continue to appear as cooperating titles under the Suhler Verlagsgesellschaft.

Coverage and Content

The Freies Wort's local pages cover the public life of southern Thuringia in depth. Suhl city politics forms a core beat: the city council, the lord mayor's office, the firearms industry's regulation and the city's economic development. The paper reports on the district administrations of Hildburghausen, Sonneberg, Schmalkalden-Meiningen, and the Ilm-Kreis, covers the courts and police, and follows the regional economy with specialist knowledge: the tourism industry of the Thuringian Forest, the manufacturing traditions, and the demographic challenges of a shrinking region.

The paper covers the region's winter sports extensively: the ski jumping and biathlon events, the Oberhof winter sports center, and the athletes who represent the region internationally. Education, healthcare, the emergency services, and the churches, clubs, and associations that structure community life form further beats. The paper's local desks in the seven towns ensure that the region's news is covered by reporters rooted in the communities, from the Rennsteig to the Bavarian border. The paper's coverage of the firearms industry's regulation, the hunting traditions, and the Suhl weapons museum gives the paper a specialist beat that few other regional dailies can match.

The paper cooperates with the Meininger Mediengesellschaft, which publishes the FW Meininger Tageblatt, sharing articles and sometimes whole pages. Together with the Neue Presse of Coburg, the Südthüringer Zeitung of Bad Salzungen, and the Frankenpost of Hof, the Freies Wort forms the "Regionalzeitungsgruppe Hof/Coburg/Suhl," operated by the Süddeutscher Verlag, with the four papers sharing a common national and international section. The paper's classified and display advertising, family announcements, and death notices complete the daily's offering, and the paper's reader service journalism addresses the practical questions of daily life in southern Thuringia, from the winter sports calendar to the region's healthcare and transport connections.

Organization and Ownership

The Freies Wort is published by the Suhler Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, based in Suhl. The paper's owners are the Süddeutscher Verlag of Munich, which holds 70 percent, and the SPD's media holding Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft (ddvg) of Hamburg, which holds 30 percent. The paper's editor-in-chief is Stephan Sohr, and its managing director is Andreas Heinkel. The Süddeutscher Verlag's ownership connects the Freies Wort to one of Germany's major publishing houses, the publisher of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, giving the regional daily access to the group's journalistic, technological, and commercial resources while the Suhl newsroom maintains the local autonomy on which the southern Thuringian readers depend.

The paper's printing takes place in the Druckzentrum Suhl, a subsidiary of the Suhler Verlagsgesellschaft within the Zeitungsgruppe Hof/Coburg/Suhl, which also prints the Neue Presse, the Südthüringer Zeitung, and the Wochenspiegel. Financial details for the individual titles are not disclosed separately. The publishing group's structure, with the shared printing center, the shared national and international section, and the cooperating titles, reflects the consolidation of the regional press that has characterized the German newspaper industry since the 1990s.

Digital Presence

The Freies Wort's digital home is insuedthueringen.de, the portal that unites the paper with the Südthüringer Zeitung and the region's other titles. The portal carries the paper's local reporting for southern Thuringia alongside the region's wider coverage, with continuously updated news, photo galleries, and video. The paper offers an e-paper edition reproducing the printed paper page for page, and the digital products include newsletters, breaking-news alerts, and apps for mobile devices.

As a subscription daily, much of the paper's digital content sits behind a paywall, with registered and subscribed readers accessing the full local reporting. The Freies Wort's local journalism circulates through the group's social media channels, extending the paper's coverage of southern Thuringia to readers who encounter the paper primarily online and on mobile devices, while the printed daily continues to serve its core subscription base across the Thuringian Forest and the Franconian border country. The digital platform ensures that the paper's reporting reaches the commuters, the younger readers, and the region's diaspora, who follow the southern Thuringian news from afar.
