About Radio Bollerwagen
Radio Bollerwagen
Radio Bollerwagen is Germany's leading party-hits radio station, a private broadcaster owned by the ffn Mediengruppe and headquartered in Hanover, Lower Saxony. Launched in 2017 as a pure web radio, it has grown into a multi-state digital broadcaster distributed via DAB+ in eleven German federal states plus Austria and Switzerland, alongside a nationwide live stream. Under the slogan "Xtreme Party Music", the station plays a 24-hour format of party schlager, Eurodance and feel-good hits aimed at listeners in a celebratory mood, from Ballermann regulars to après-ski crowds. With a daily reach of around 314,000 listeners and millions of daily online audio sessions, it has become one of the most successful format spin-offs in the German commercial radio market.
Overview
Radio Bollerwagen's programme is built around one promise: nonstop party music. The core repertoire consists of Partyschlager and Eurodance, the upbeat German-language party hits and nineties dance anthems associated with artists such as Mickie Krause, Mia Julia, Ikke Hüftgold, Mr. President, the Vengaboys, Scooter, Boney M. and AC/DC. Depending on the time of day, the mix also draws on (punk) rock, hip-hop, EDM and pop rock, but the overwhelming majority of titles date from 1990 onwards, giving the station an unmistakably energetic, nostalgic-danceable sound.
Distribution is the station's growth story. After starting as an internet-only programme in 2017, Radio Bollerwagen moved onto DAB+ in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2019, then added Hesse, Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, and in 2024 expanded into Saxony with DAB+ coverage in Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz and Freiberg. Today it is carried on DAB+ in Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen (temporarily), Hamburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, with temporary FM carriage in Bremen on Radio Roland frequencies, plus reception in Austria and Switzerland and a live stream that works anywhere. Audience research confirms the success: the station entered the official Media-Analyse in 2022 and immediately placed in the top 20 among Germany's most-listened-to web radios, reaching 314,000 listeners per day (ma 2023 Audio II) and 4.81 million online audio sessions per day (ma 2023 IP Audio III).
History
Radio Bollerwagen began in 2017 as an online-only spin-off of the ffn Mediengruppe, the Hanover-based operator of the Lower Saxon private station Radio FFN. The concept was straightforward: a dedicated digital channel for party music, a genre that fits the traditional FFN audience but could not be accommodated on the main station's adult-contemporary schedule. The name plays on the Bollerwagen, the handcart Germans traditionally wheel along on Father's Day outings stocked with beer and music, a symbol of uncomplicated communal celebration.
The terrestrial breakthrough came in 2019, when the station secured capacity on the DAB+ multiplex in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state and a stronghold of party and carnival culture. The move proved the format's appeal beyond the web: further DAB+ launches followed in quick succession in Hesse, Lower Saxony and Hamburg, with the Hamburg launch in April 2021 positioning the station explicitly for the party metropolis of the Reeperbahn. The Schleswig-Holstein launch, covering Flensburg and the party island of Sylt, marked the fourth state-level DAB+ multiplex for the station. In 2024 the expansion continued eastward with DAB+ launches in Dresden, Chemnitz and Freiberg, described by ffn chief executive Harald Gehrung as a move into one of the most important radio markets in eastern Germany.
The audience numbers followed the distribution growth. In 2022 Radio Bollerwagen received its first official rating in the Media-Analyse and landed immediately in the top 20 among Germany's web radios, a remarkable debut for a five-year-old format channel. The ma 2023 results confirmed the trajectory with 314,000 daily listeners and nearly five million daily online sessions, figures that made the station one of the standout digital successes of the ffn group.
Programming
Radio Bollerwagen is a format radio in the purest sense: on weekdays the programme consists exclusively of unmoderated music blocks, interrupted only by hourly news bulletins and weather reports. There is no daytime presenter team; the music does the talking. The playlist is curated in Hanover and leans heavily on party schlager and Eurodance, with the dayparting adding harder dance, rock and hip-hop flavours at appropriate hours.
Weekends bring the station's two hosted highlights. The two-hour "Ikke-Hüftgold-Show", named after and featuring the party schlager star Ikke Hüftgold, is the flagship personality programme, while a separate weekend show takes music requests from listeners. Hourly news and weather keep the station tethered to the world outside the party, a service element that distinguishes it from a pure jukebox stream. The overall sound is deliberately relentless in its good humour: "Xtreme Party Music" around the clock, seven days a week, with the listener knowing that at any hour the next title will keep the celebration going.
The weekend personality shows serve an important strategic purpose beyond entertainment. Because the weekday programme runs presenter-free, the Ikke-Hüftgold-Show and the request programme give the station its human face, creating appointment listening and a sense of community among fans of the genre. Ikke Hüftgold, a stage persona of a performer who has become one of the defining figures of contemporary German party schlager, embodies exactly the audience the station courts: young, celebration-oriented and fluent in the ironic-sentimental language of Ballermann culture. The listener-request show, in turn, turns the audience itself into the programme makers, reinforcing the communal feeling that has always been the format's strongest asset.
Organization and Ownership
Radio Bollerwagen is owned and operated by the Funk & Fernsehen Nordwestdeutschland GmbH & Co. KG, the company behind Radio FFN, one of Germany's most established private radio groups. The managing director is Harald Gehrung, who also leads the ffn Mediengruppe, and the programme director of Radio Bollerwagen is Mathias Bartels. The station is run from the group's Hanover base at Stiftstraße 8 in the state capital, where a team of radio professionals assembles the format.
As part of the ffn group, Radio Bollerwagen benefits from the infrastructure, newsroom resources and industry relationships of its parent company, including the hourly news service that runs on the party channel. The ownership structure places it firmly in the Lower Saxon private radio landscape: the operating company is backed by 49 newspaper publishers from the broadcast area together with the Mediengesellschaft Niedersachsen. The station's rapid multi-state DAB+ expansion was financed and negotiated within this group framework, and its commercial success has made it the group's most prominent digital-only brand.
Digital Presence
Digital distribution is not an add-on for Radio Bollerwagen; it is the station's native habitat. The live stream on radiobollerwagen.de has been available since the 2017 launch and remains the primary way many listeners tune in, particularly outside the DAB+ coverage areas. The station is optimized for online and smart-speaker listening, and its millions of daily online audio sessions make it one of Germany's most-streamed radio brands.
The website functions as the stream portal and brand home, while the station's presence on social media and in app aggregators extends the party format to mobile listeners. Combined with the DAB+ footprint across eleven federal states, the digital strategy gives Radio Bollerwagen near-national availability without a single traditional FM transmitter of its own, a distribution model that has become a template for how German format radio can scale in the digital age.
