About Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg
Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg
Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg is the private local radio station for the federal city of Bonn and the surrounding Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. On air since 11 May 1991, it serves one of the most distinctive broadcast areas in the state: a former federal capital with international institutions, a large university and a vibrant carnival tradition, ringed by the towns and villages of the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis. The station broadcasts a locally produced adult-contemporary programme on FM 91.2 MHz, via DAB+ and as a live stream, with a fourteen-hour local schedule on weekdays built around the morning show "Am Morgen", the daytime programme "Bei der Arbeit" and the afternoon drive "Ab in den Feierabend". Outside its own hours it carries the Radio NRW framework programme from Oberhausen.
Overview
Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg covers Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis, a combined broadcast area of well over half a million residents stretching from the former government quarter on the Rhine to towns such as Siegburg, Sankt Augustin, Königswinter, Bad Honnef, Troisdorf and Hennef. The terrestrial flagship is FM 91.2 MHz, complemented by DAB+ distribution and a live internet stream that extends the programme far beyond the region. The editorial office and studio are located in Bonn itself.
The station's programme identity is shaped by its city. Bonn's role as Germany's former capital and a continuing centre of federal institutions, UN organizations and international companies gives the local news agenda a weight that few other NRW local stations can match, while the Rhineland carnival, the Beethoven heritage and events such as Rhein in Flammen and the Bonn Marathon provide a rich calendar of local colour. The music format is adult contemporary, aimed at a broad mainstream audience, with the music selection largely coordinated with the Radio NRW framework while the spoken content is produced locally. Local news airs every half hour during the day, distilled at key times into a signature one-minute summary of the most important stories from the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg region.
History
Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg went on the air on 11 May 1991, licensed by the Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen, in the second great wave of NRW local radio launches that followed the pioneering stations of 1990. Bonn in 1991 was still the seat of government of the Federal Republic, and the new local station arrived at a moment when the city was beginning its long transition toward its post-capital identity, a transformation the station has documented on the air ever since.
Like all NRW local stations, Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg was organized under the state's two-pillar model: programme responsibility with the Veranstaltergemeinschaft Lokalfunk Bonn/Rhein-Sieg e. V., a community-based association, and economic responsibility with a separate operating company. The business side has long been connected to the DuMont media house, which participates in seven local radio stations across the Rhineland. Over the decades the station expanded its local broadcast hours and its technical distribution, adding DAB+ to the original FM service and building out a full digital presence. Editorial continuity was reinforced on 1 May 2022, when Volker Groß, the station's long-standing morning-show host, became editor-in-chief, a promotion from within that underlined the station's reliance on voices its audience already knows and trusts.
The station's history is inseparable from Bonn's own transformation. When Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg launched, Bonn was still the seat of the federal government; the Berlin/Bonn decision of 1991, taken just weeks after the station's first broadcast, set in motion the city's reinvention as a federal city of international institutions, science and culture. The station has reported on every stage of that journey: the departure of ministries, the arrival of UN agencies and Deutsche Post and Deutsche Telekom headquarters, the growth of the university, and the city's successful repositioning around the Beethoven anniversary and its Rhine festivals. Few local stations in Germany have had a more dramatic civic story to cover, and the depth of that institutional memory is one of Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg's distinguishing strengths.
Programming
The weekday schedule is one of the longest local outputs among NRW stations, with fourteen hours of locally produced programming Monday to Friday. The day opens with "Am Morgen" from 6 to 10 am, the flagship morning show with local news, traffic, weather and city topics. "Bei der Arbeit" follows from 10 am to 3 pm, aimed at the at-work audience, and "Ab in den Feierabend" carries listeners home from 3 to 8 pm. On Saturdays the station broadcasts locally from 8 am to 1 pm, and on Sundays from 9 am to noon.
Local news is the backbone of the schedule. From 5:30 am to 7:30 pm on weekdays, the Bonn newsroom airs local bulletins every half hour, with the early-morning and midday editions condensed into a rapid format that packs the most important regional headlines into about sixty seconds alongside world news and local traffic. Later in the day the bulletins expand into fuller three-minute local reports. The station also produces special programming for the region's signature events: carnival season, with its Rosenmontag parades and sessions, receives extensive coverage, as do Rhein in Flammen, the spectacular fireworks nights on the Rhine, and the Bonn Marathon. Outside its own broadcast hours, the station takes the Radio NRW framework programme, including the hourly world news, transmitting a statewide advertising block each hour in return.
Organization and Ownership
Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg operates as a GmbH & Co. KG under the two-pillar model of North Rhine-Westphalia's media law. The programme is formally organized by the Veranstaltergemeinschaft Lokalfunk Bonn/Rhein-Sieg e. V., the association of socially relevant groups that holds editorial responsibility, while the business is run by the operating company. Managing directors are Ralph Steinhausen and Uwe Peltzer, and the editor-in-chief since 1 May 2022 is Volker Groß, previously the station's morning-show presenter.
The economic side of the station is linked to the DuMont media group of Cologne, whose Medienhaus DuMont Rheinland participates in seven local radio stations including Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg alongside Radio Berg, Radio Erft, Radio Euskirchen, Radio Köln, Radio Leverkusen and Radio Rur. This connection gives the Bonn station access to the service infrastructure, advertising marketing and technical support of one of the Rhineland's largest media houses, while the two-pillar structure keeps editorial decisions in the hands of the local programme association.
Digital Presence
Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg streams its full programme live on radiobonn.de, the hub of its digital offering. The website combines the stream with the station's local news output, traffic and weather services, programme information and event tips, functioning as a digital extension of the on-air service for the Bonn region. The stream makes the station available to former Bonn residents, commuters and the curious worldwide, while DAB+ distribution has modernized the terrestrial offer alongside the long-running FM 91.2 MHz signal.
The station's digital strategy follows the pattern of the NRW local stations: the website and stream carry the local journalism that is the station's core product, from the half-hourly news bulletins to the special coverage of carnival, Rhein in Flammen and the marathon. Smart-speaker availability and mobile listening round out a multi-platform presence that keeps the former capital's local radio within reach wherever its audience happens to be.
For a station serving a region as event-driven as Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district, the digital platforms also function as an archive and service desk: carnival schedules, road closures during Rhein in Flammen, marathon route information and the constantly updated traffic picture are published online alongside the audio, making radiobonn.de a practical everyday tool for residents rather than merely a stream portal.
