Radio Ennepe Ruhr

Radio Ennepe Ruhr is the private local radio station for the Ennepe-Ruhr district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, serving the nine cities of Breckerfeld, Ennepetal, Schwelm, Gevelsberg, Sprockhövel, Wetter, Herdecke, Hattingen and Witten. On air since 31 August 1991, it celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2026, looking back on a station history that is unique in German local radio: hardly any local broadcaster has changed address so often or passed through so many different owners and operators. Launched in Gevelsberg as Radio EN and renamed Radio Ennepe Ruhr in 2008, the station broadcasts on four FM frequencies, via DAB+ and as a live stream, with a locally produced programme built around district news, traffic and service, complemented by the Radio NRW framework.

Overview

Radio Ennepe Ruhr covers the entire Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis with four FM frequencies: 91.5 MHz from Hattingen for Hattingen and Sprockhövel, 92.7 MHz from Herdecke/Rehberg for Wetter and Herdecke (in use since 23 May 2011, replacing the old 107.2 MHz), 104.2 MHz from Witten-Stockum for Witten and Dortmund, and 105.7 MHz from Gevelsberg/Hindenburghöhe for Hagen, Breckerfeld, Ennepetal, Schwelm, Gevelsberg and Sprockhövel. The 104.2 MHz signal reaches well beyond the district into Bochum, Dortmund and parts of Herne, Herten, Castrop-Rauxel, Datteln and Oer-Erkenschwick. Since 18 December 2025 the station has also been available via DAB+ on channel 11b for Südwestfalen and Dortmund, and a live stream and smartphone app extend the programme worldwide.

The nine cities of the broadcast area form a coherent region between the Ruhr conurbation and the Sauerland, a landscape of former industrial towns along the Ennepe and Ruhr rivers. The programme follows the NRW local radio architecture of locally produced hours plus the Radio NRW framework from Oberhausen, with an adult-contemporary music format and a strong emphasis on district news, traffic and service information.

The district's geography shapes the station's agenda in distinctive ways. The Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis stretches from the southern edge of the Ruhr cities into the hills of the Sauerland, and its nine cities have little of the single-centre structure of a city station's broadcast area: Schwelm is the administrative seat, Witten the largest city, Hattingen the historic old town on the Ruhr, and the smaller towns each have their own strong local identities. A district station must therefore be a federation of local agendas, covering nine town halls and nine sets of local stories while finding the common themes, from regional transport to the shared industrial heritage, that bind the district together. Few NRW local stations face a more demanding balancing act.

History

Radio Ennepe Ruhr began broadcasting on 31 August 1991 in Gevelsberg under the name Radio EN, licensed by the Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen. It was founded as part of the Westfunk group belonging to the Funke media group, with its base at the Funkhaus Hagen, which it shared with Radio Hagen. In 2008 the station was renamed from Radio EN to Radio Ennepe Ruhr, giving the district's full name to the programme.

What followed was an ownership and location odyssey with few parallels in German local radio. In 2002 the Ruhr Nachrichten withdrew from the station, after which the WAZ group (the predecessor of today's Funke Mediengruppe) continued Radio EN alone until 2020. Westfunk then announced it was no longer willing to bear the accumulated annual losses, reported at around 6.4 million euros, and the operating company terminated its contract at the end of 2020. The station then spent two years under the responsibility of Radio NRW and three years with PFD Pressefunk, a subsidiary of the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe, before returning to the Funke Mediengruppe in August 2026.

The station's address changed almost as often as its owner: from Gevelsberg the production moved to Hagen, then to Oberhausen, then to Wuppertal, and in August 2026 to Bochum, with another move already announced. Through all the turbulence, the programme for the Ennepe-Ruhr district never went off air. Current shareholders are FUNKE Medien NRW GmbH with 73.79 percent, MFDS-Holding GmbH with 24.56 percent and the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis itself with 1.65 percent. The 35th anniversary on 31 August 2026 was celebrated as a testament to a station that survived every crisis its market could produce.

Programming

The programme combines locally produced hours for the nine district cities with the Radio NRW framework. Local news, traffic and weather for Breckerfeld, Ennepetal, Schwelm, Gevelsberg, Sprockhövel, Wetter, Herdecke, Hattingen and Witten form the core of the station's own output, with the newsroom covering district politics, local business, culture and the everyday life of the Ennepe-Ruhr region. The music format is adult contemporary, with the music flow largely coordinated with the Radio NRW framework while the spoken content is produced for the district.

Editor-in-chief is Lennart Hemme. The citizen-radio window required by the state media law is produced with two recognized radio workshops in the district, one in Gevelsberg and the Ruhrstadtstudio in Witten, giving local radio enthusiasts airtime for their own productions. Outside its own broadcast hours, the station takes the Radio NRW framework programme, including the hourly world news, transmitting a statewide advertising block each hour in return. Analogue cable distribution was discontinued in January 2021, with the station focusing on FM, DAB+ and digital. The programme's resilience through the station's many relocations is itself part of its identity: whatever the address on the studio door, the nine cities of the Ennepe-Ruhr district remain the fixed point of the broadcast.

Organization and Ownership

Radio Ennepe Ruhr's ownership reflects its turbulent recent history. The current shareholders are FUNKE Medien NRW GmbH with 73.79 percent, MFDS-Holding GmbH with 24.56 percent and the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis with 1.65 percent, following the station's return to the Funke group in August 2026 after the interludes with Radio NRW and PFD Pressefunk. Radio advertising marketing is handled through Westfunk, the Funke-affiliated marketer for the Ruhr-area local stations.

The programme is produced by the station's editorial team under the station's licence, led by editor-in-chief Lennart Hemme, most recently from Bochum with a further move announced. The two-pillar structure of North Rhine-Westphalia's media law continues to govern the station, separating programme responsibility from the commercial interests of the shareholders.

Digital Presence

Beyond the four FM frequencies and the DAB+ distribution on channel 11b, Radio Ennepe Ruhr streams its full programme live on the internet via radioenneperuhr.de and offers a smartphone app, making the district programme available worldwide. The website serves as the station's news and service portal for the nine cities, carrying local news, traffic information and programme details.

The digital platforms have gained importance as the station's production base moved between cities: the stream and the website provide a stable point of contact with the audience regardless of where the newsroom happens to sit. Together with FM and DAB+, the online presence gives Radio Ennepe Ruhr full multi-platform coverage of its district 35 years after its first broadcast as Radio EN.

For a station whose listeners are spread across nine cities and two river valleys, the digital offering also solves a practical problem the FM network can only partly address: the four FM frequencies each cover part of the district, but the stream delivers the complete district programme everywhere, from the Sauerland hills to commuters working in Dortmund or Bochum. The website's district-wide news, traffic and service information make it a daily utility for navigating the Ennepe-Ruhr region.
