About Handwerksblatt

Handwerksblatt

The Deutsches Handwerksblatt (DHB) is Germany's highest-circulation business magazine for the skilled crafts and the SME sector, published eleven times a year by the Verlagsanstalt Handwerk GmbH in Düsseldorf. With a distributed circulation of 348,755 copies, it reaches nearly every third craft business in Germany, making it the market leader in its distribution area. As the official organ of 17 chambers of skilled crafts (Handwerkskammern), the magazine delivers practice-oriented reporting on current developments in business, politics, finance, and technology, with a focus on utility journalism that gives entrepreneurs valuable information and concrete suggestions for their daily operations. The readership consists mainly of owners, managing directors, and senior employees of medium-sized craft businesses.

Overview

The Deutsches Handwerksblatt appears eleven times a year as a business newspaper for decision-makers in the skilled crafts. Its editorial program covers the topics that determine the daily lives of craft entrepreneurs: SME policy and economics, products and services, business management, law, and taxes. The editorial focus on Nutzwertjournalismus, utility journalism, means that articles are designed to deliver actionable information rather than mere news: readers find guidance they can apply in their businesses, from regulatory changes to financing options.

The magazine's unique distribution model underpins its market position: as the official organ of 17 Handwerkskammern, it is delivered regularly to all businesses registered in the craft registers within its distribution area. The participating chambers design their own regional editions for their chamber districts, so readers receive both the nationwide core content and regional pages relevant to their area. This chamber-based distribution gives the magazine a reach and a legitimacy that purely commercial titles cannot match: it arrives as the voice of the craft organization itself.

History

The publishing house behind the magazine, the Verlagsanstalt Handwerk GmbH, was founded on June 21, 1926, as the "Verlagsanstalt des Westfälischen Handwerks" by the chambers of Arnsberg, Bielefeld, and Dortmund, based in Dortmund. Its founding mission, the production and distribution of publications, books, and forms concerning the skilled crafts, remains its purpose today. In the Weimar Republic, the publishing house issued a "Handwerkszeitung" as a bulletin for chambers in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia; on January 1, 1933, the first issue of the "Westdeutsche Handwerks- und Gewerbezeitung" appeared, published by the chambers of Arnsberg, Düsseldorf, Bielefeld, and Dortmund.

During the 1930s the paper was renamed the "Westdeutsche Handwerks-Zeitung," and in 1939 the company became the "Verlagsanstalt des Westdeutschen Handwerks GmbH." Wartime paper restrictions severely impacted publishing, and in 1943 the Handwerks-Zeitung had to be discontinued, at a time when its 23,000 subscribers represented an important economic pillar of the publishing house. In 1949 the publishing house released the first postwar craft newspaper as the official organ of the chambers of Arnsberg, Bielefeld, Detmold, Dortmund, and Düsseldorf. Since then, the Deutsches Handwerksblatt has undergone several name changes and is now the official organ of 17 chambers with a total circulation exceeding 340,000 copies. After renaming to "Verlagsanstalt Handwerk GmbH" in 1971 and moving to Düsseldorf in 1980, the publishing house continuously expanded its range of specialist publications.

Coverage and Content

The magazine's content is organized around the entrepreneurial needs of craft businesses. Economic and political reporting covers SME policy, economic developments, and the political decisions affecting the crafts, from tax legislation to vocational-training policy. Finance topics address financing, investment, and insurance for craft businesses. Technology coverage follows the innovations relevant to the trades, from digital tools to energy-efficient building. Legal and tax guidance explains regulatory changes in accessible form.

The regional editions, designed by the participating chambers for their districts, add local relevance: chamber news, regional economic developments, training and continuing-education offerings, and local events. The combination of nationwide core content and regional pages makes each issue both a business magazine and a chamber bulletin. The website handwerksblatt.de extends the offering with a craft lexicon, information on topics from invoicing to insolvency, funding opportunities, book tips, and an online bookshop, serving master craftspeople and SME managers beyond the print rhythm.

Organization and Ownership

The magazine is published by the Verlagsanstalt Handwerk GmbH, based at Auf'm Tetelberg 7 in Düsseldorf. The company's shareholders are the chambers of skilled crafts in its distribution area, the West German Chamber of Skilled Crafts Day, the German Chamber of Skilled Crafts Day, and craft trade associations from North Rhine-Westphalia, giving the publishing house a cooperative ownership structure rooted in the craft organization itself. The central editorial office is in Düsseldorf, while regional pages and reports are managed by the respective chambers.

The editor-in-chief is Stefan Buhren. The magazine carries the print ISSN 1435-3822. The publishing house, with 51 to 200 employees, has increasingly focused on innovative communication and education media, with a team of specialist journalists, media experts, and social-media specialists. The chamber ownership ensures that the magazine's editorial line serves the interests of the craft businesses rather than external investors, a governance model that underpins its credibility with readers.

Market Position

With 348,755 distributed copies reaching nearly every third craft business in Germany, the Deutsches Handwerksblatt is the undisputed circulation leader among business media for the skilled crafts. Its readership of owners, managing directors, and senior employees represents the decision-makers of the German Mittelstand's craft segment, a high-value audience for advertisers in vehicles, tools, finance, insurance, and business services. The chamber-based distribution model, in which every registered business in the distribution area receives the magazine, gives advertisers a reach that no subscription-based title can replicate.

The magazine's competition includes the Deutsche Handwerks Zeitung and handwerk magazin, but its chamber-organ status and regional editions give it a distinct profile: it is simultaneously a business magazine, an association bulletin, and a regional newspaper for the crafts. This hybrid identity has sustained it through the structural crisis of print media, as the institutional distribution provides a stability that newsstand sales cannot. For the chambers, the magazine is both a member service and a political instrument, communicating the craft organization's positions to the businesses it represents; for the businesses, it is a trusted source that arrives with the authority of their own professional institution.

Digital Presence

The Deutsches Handwerksblatt is also published as a digital paper, allowing users to read their Handwerksblatt anytime and anywhere on mobile devices, with a free user account required. The digital edition is available to readers significantly earlier than the print version, and the online variant can be subscribed to in parallel with the printed edition. The website handwerksblatt.de, updated with current articles such as the July 2026 culture coverage, serves as the brand's digital news platform. Its editorial mix online mirrors the print philosophy of utility: alongside news, the site offers the kind of evergreen service content that craft businesses search for daily, from sample invoices to insolvency guidance. This search-oriented service layer gives the digital presence a longevity that news alone cannot provide, as practical guides continue to attract readers years after publication.

The site's service offerings include the craft lexicon, practical information on topics from invoicing to insolvency, funding guides, and the online bookshop. Social media presences, including Facebook and LinkedIn with its company page, extend the brand's reach and provide discussion forums for readers. The combination of an eleven-times-yearly print magazine with chamber distribution, a digital paper, a service-oriented website, and social media makes the Deutsches Handwerksblatt a multi-channel medium that serves Germany's craft businesses in print, online, and in person.
