About Radio Köln
Radio Köln
Radio Köln is the local radio station for the city of Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, broadcasting from the Medienhaus on the Amsterdamer Straße in Köln-Niehl. On air since 4 May 1991, it is the local voice of Germany's fourth-largest city, reaching 229,000 people daily according to the E.M.A. NRW 2025/I survey, with 173,000 in the commercially crucial 20-to-59 target group, and leading the market among 14- to 49-year-olds ahead of WDR 2 and 1Live. The station broadcasts on FM 107.1 MHz, via livestream and mobile app, and since 18 December 2025 on the new DAB+ channel for Cologne, Bonn and Aachen. With 18 permanent and up to 20 freelance staff, it is one of the largest editorial teams in NRW local radio.
Overview
Radio Köln broadcasts on 107.1 MHz FM from the Cologne city centre transmitter at Nord-Süd-Fahrt/Sternengasse, with the signal carrying in exposed locations to the borders of the Sauerland and the Nordeifel, via livestream and mobile app, and since 18 December 2025 on DAB+. The programme is the classic NRW local radio mix of local news, service and adult contemporary music, but with a Cologne identity that no other station can copy: on the important days of the Cologne Carnival, the station plays exclusively Kölsche Musik during the daytime.
The reach figures underline the station's position: 229,000 daily listeners, market leadership in the young and middle-aged target groups, and a newsroom of 18 permanent plus up to 20 freelance staff producing the city's local journalism. In a city with the WDR's headquarters, Deutschlandfunk and a dense commercial radio landscape, Radio Köln holds its own as the station that speaks Cologne's language, literally and figuratively.
Cologne is arguably the toughest local radio market in Germany: the WDR, headquartered in the city, fields multiple programmes with deep local roots; Deutschlandfunk broadcasts from the city; and the statewide commercial stations compete for the same commuters. That Radio Köln leads among 14- to 49-year-olds in this environment, ahead of WDR 2 and 1Live, is the station's proudest achievement and the proof that local identity, the Kölsch dialect, the carnival, the neighbourhood stories, can beat even the best-funded competition.
History
Radio Köln went on air in May 1991, licensed by the Landesanstalt für Medien NRW, as the local station for the cathedral city. The studios have moved four times in the station's history, tracing the media geography of Cologne: from the Technologiepark in Köln-Braunsfeld at launch, to the Mediapark 5 from October 1995, to the Schanzenstraße 28 in Köln-Mülheim from 31 January 2014, and finally to the Medienhaus on the Amsterdamer Straße in Köln-Niehl from 16 September 2024.
Each move reflected a stage in the station's growth: the technology park of the pioneering years, the Mediapark of the media boom, the Mülheim creative quarter, and now the modern Medienhaus in the north of the city. The Mediapark years, from 1995, placed the station in the middle of Cologne's media mile, the futuristic quarter that symbolized the city's media ambitions; the Schanzenstraße years in Mülheim, from 2014, put it in the converted industrial buildings of the creative district; and the 2024 move to the Amsterdamer Straße in Niehl gave the station a purpose-built modern media house. Through all the moves, the station's identity remained constant: the local radio of Cologne, the city of the carnival, the cathedral and the Kölsch dialect, broadcasting the city's news every day for more than three decades.
Programming
The flagship is "Guten Morgen Köln", mainly moderated by Daniel Wallroth, who also represents the station on stage at the city's major events. Further presenters include Daniel Collmann, Gabor Leitner, Ralf Düker, Marie Güttge, Stephan Unkelbach, Daniel Dähling, Luis Eck, Tobias Volke, Kristina Sczesny and Svenja Hein. The programme combines the local news and service of the NRW local radio model with the music format of the Radio NRW framework, tailored to the Cologne audience.
The carnival programming is the station's signature: on the important days of the Cologne Carnival, from Weiberfastnacht to Rosenmontag, the daytime programme plays exclusively Kölsche Musik, the dialect songs that are the soundtrack of the city's fifth season. For a station in the carnival capital, it is both a programming duty and a declaration of identity.
The carnival is not a side topic in Cologne but the city's defining cultural event, and the station treats it accordingly: months of preparation, live reporting from the parades and sessions, and the all-Kölsche-music days when the whole city sings along. The dialect music, from the classic Karnevalslieder to the current session hits, is the one format no national station can replicate, and Radio Köln owns it completely. The Chefredakteur is David Fernández, in office since 1 January 2026.
Organization and Ownership
The station operates within the NRW two-pillar model, with marketing handled by DuMont, the Cologne-based media house behind the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and the Kölnische Rundschau. The DuMont connection roots the station in the city's publishing tradition: the same media house that has reported Cologne's news in print for generations now markets the airwaves that carry it, a natural partnership for the city's local radio. The editorial team of 18 permanent and up to 20 freelance staff is one of the largest in the NRW local radio system, reflecting the size and importance of the Cologne market. The Medienhaus on the Amsterdamer Straße in Köln-Niehl, the station's home since September 2024, houses the modern studios from which the city's local radio is produced.
The reach leadership among 14- to 49-year-olds, ahead of the WDR's second programme and the youth wave 1Live, is the commercial foundation of the operation: in Germany's most competitive regional radio market, Radio Köln has carved out the local position that neither the public broadcasters nor the statewide commercial stations can occupy. The 18 permanent and up to 20 freelance staff are the newsroom behind that position, a team large enough to cover a city of over a million with the density of reporting that local radio promises.
Digital Presence
The livestream and the mobile app carry the programme beyond the 107.1 MHz coverage, and the DAB+ launch on 18 December 2025 added digital terrestrial reception across the Cologne-Bonn-Aachen region. The website radiokoeln.de is the hub for the station's digital services, from the stream to the local news and the programme information.
For a station in the media city of Cologne, the digital presence is a natural extension of the broadcast: the carnival programming, the "Guten Morgen Köln" show and the half-hourly local news all travel with the listeners on the app and the stream. More than three decades after its 1991 launch, Radio Köln remains the local voice of the cathedral city, on FM 107.1, on DAB+, on the app and on the stream, the market leader among the city's young and middle-aged listeners.
The DAB+ launch on 18 December 2025 was the latest step in that digital evolution: digital terrestrial reception across the Cologne-Bonn-Aachen region, complementing the FM signal that reaches to the Sauerland and the Nordeifel in exposed locations. For the commuters on the A3 and the A57, the carnival fans in the region and the Cologne expatriates worldwide, the station is now available on every path, keeping the city's voice audible wherever its listeners go.
