About Heilpädagogik

Heilpädagogik

heilpaedagogik.de is the quarterly trade journal of the Berufs- und Fachverband Heilpädagogik (BHP), the German professional association for curative pedagogy, published by the BHP Verlag with a sold circulation of around 6,500 copies. The journal covers curative pedagogy and its neighboring scientific disciplines, serving the professionals who support people with disabilities and developmental challenges in youth, elderly, and disability care. Free of charge for BHP members, it is read by care institutions, cooperating committees, associations, and more than 100 social training institutions and universities across Germany and the German-speaking European countries. First issued in 1985, it is the association's central medium for the theory-practice dialogue of the profession.

Overview

heilpaedagogik.de appears quarterly as the Fachzeitschrift of the BHP, addressing curative pedagogues in all fields of practice: early intervention, youth welfare, disability assistance, elderly care, and inclusive education. The editorial program combines specialist articles on curative-pedagogical theory, diagnostics, and methods with reports on professional policy, training, and the association's work. The journal's role is to connect theory and practice: the BHP explicitly promotes the link between the two through cooperation with training institutions, and the journal is the medium in which that dialogue takes place.

The readership extends beyond the association's approximately 5,000 members: the journal is subscribed to by diverse provider institutions in youth, elderly, and disability care, cooperating committees, associations and organizations, and more than 100 social training institutions and universities in Germany and German-speaking Europe. This institutional readership makes the journal a multiplier: its articles reach the students and trainees who will shape the profession's future.

History

The journal first appeared in 1985 under the title BHP-Informationen, in the same year the Berufsverband der Heilpädagoginnen und Heilpädagogen was founded. In 1995 it was renamed info, the quarterly journal of the BHP, and at the beginning of 2003 it received its current title: heilpaedagogik.de, the trade journal of the Berufs- und Fachverband Heilpädagogik e.V. The title's ".de" ending, unusual for a print journal, signaled the association's digital orientation at the turn of the millennium.

The BHP itself was founded in 1985 as the only German professional association for curative pedagogy, based in Berlin, and has grown to around 5,000 members. The association works for the professionalization of curative pedagogy and represents the interests of curative pedagogues in training and profession as well as in social, labor, and collective-bargaining law. In 2001 it founded the European Academy for Curative Pedagogy, attached to the federal office; in 2005 the International Society of Curative-Pedagogical Professional Associations; and in 2013 the International Archive for Curative Pedagogy, the Emil E. Kobi Archive. The journal has accompanied all these developments as the association's publishing flagship.

Coverage and Content

The journal's subject area is curative pedagogy and its neighboring scientific disciplines: special education, developmental psychology, rehabilitation sciences, and the social sciences of disability. Specialist articles address curative-pedagogical diagnostics, individual support planning, developmental processes, counseling, and the methods of inclusive practice. The focus on developmental processes, curative-pedagogical diagnostics, individual support, and counseling distinguishes curative pedagogy from related professions such as curative-education care, which combines pedagogical and nursing tasks in everyday support.

Professional-political coverage addresses the framework conditions of the profession: the implementation of the Federal Participation Act (Bundesteilhabegesetz), the strengthening of participation rights for people with disabilities, training and study paths in curative pedagogy, and the profession's recognition in social, labor, and collective-bargaining law. The journal reports on the association's positions, such as its statements on disability legislation, and on the international development of the profession through the European Academy and the international society. Training institutions and universities are both readers and contributors, keeping the journal close to the profession's educational base.

Professional Context

Curative pedagogy operates at the intersection of education, therapy, and social work, in a society that has committed itself to inclusion. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Federal Participation Act have reshaped the legal framework: participation, self-determination, and quality of life are the goals that curative pedagogues pursue with their clients, from early intervention for children with developmental delays to support for adults with disabilities and elderly care.

The profession faces growing demand: inclusive education, the expansion of early intervention, and the demographic development increase the need for qualified curative pedagogues, who are highly sought after on the labor market. At the same time, the profession must define itself against neighboring professions and secure its recognition in collective-bargaining and social law. The training paths, through specialized schools and increasingly through universities of applied sciences, are themselves in development. A professional journal that documents the discipline's theory, reports on its politics, and connects its practitioners is the infrastructure of this professionalization: it is where the profession thinks aloud about what it is and where it is going.

Distinction in the Market

The German special-pedagogy media landscape includes a larger sibling: the Verband Sonderpädagogik (vds) publishes the Zeitschrift für Heilpädagogik, described as Europe's highest-circulation specialist publication in the field. The BHP's heilpaedagogik.de is the distinct voice of the curative-pedagogy profession as organized in the BHP: while the vds journal serves special education broadly, heilpaedagogik.de addresses the curative pedagogues in their specific professional identity, from early intervention to disability assistance.

The journal's association ownership gives it a stable foundation: free for the BHP's members, it reaches the profession's core readership by definition. The institutional subscriptions from care providers, training institutions, and universities extend its reach into practice and education. In a field where the translation of research into practice is the central challenge, a journal owned by the professional association occupies a trusted position.

Organization and Ownership

heilpaedagogik.de is published by the BHP Verlag and edited by the Berufs- und Fachverband Heilpädagogik e.V., based in Berlin. The association, founded in 1985, is the only German professional association for curative pedagogy, with around 5,000 members. It represents the profession's interests in training and practice and in social, labor, and collective-bargaining law, supports members in labor-law questions and continuing education, and promotes the theory-practice connection through cooperation with training institutions.

The association is a member of the German Central Institute for Social Issues, the German Association for Public and Private Welfare, the Federal Association for Educational Assistance, the Standing Conference of Training Institutions for Curative Pedagogy, and the National Coalition for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in Germany. The managing director named in public sources is Kai-Raphael Timpe. The journal's media page is hosted at bhponline.de, the association's web portal.

Digital Presence

The journal's digital home is the BHP's portal bhponline.de, where the media section presents the trade journal alongside the association's other publications. The association's YouTube channel extends the brand into video: the series "Echt Kathrin, Heilpädagogik unplugged" answers fundamental questions about the profession, training paths, and the distinction between curative pedagogy and curative-education care, reaching the next generation of professionals where they consume information.

The BHP's Instagram presence and the association's website keep members and the interested public current between the quarterly issues. For a quarterly journal, the digital channels provide the timeliness that the print rhythm cannot: professional-political developments, training announcements, and the association's positions reach the readership continuously. The combination of the quarterly print journal's depth with the digital channels' immediacy makes heilpaedagogik.de the central medium of the organized curative-pedagogy profession in Germany.
