About Radio Neandertal

Radio Neandertal

Radio Neandertal is the local radio station for the district of Mettmann in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on air since 15 September 1990. Licensed by the Landesanstalt für Medien NRW, it broadcasts on 97.6 MHz FM, on DAB+, on cable, via web radio and app. Named after the Neandertal valley, the world-famous 1856 discovery site of Neanderthal man that lies within its coverage area, the station serves the ten cities of the district between Düsseldorf, Wuppertal and Essen. The Chefredakteurin is Tatjana Pioschyk, and the station's technical and commercial services run through the PFD provider network.

Overview

Radio Neandertal broadcasts on 97.6 MHz FM for the Kreis Mettmann, with DAB+ distribution, cable, the web radio and the free app completing the portfolio. On weekdays the station airs around seven hours of local programming: the morning show "Die Zwei am Morgen" from 6 to 10 am and the afternoon programme "Radio Neandertal am Nachmittag" from 3 to 6 pm. Local news from the district airs every half hour throughout the day, with local weather and traffic information every half and every full hour during the local programme. The seven local hours are the station's journalistic core, the time when the ten cities get their own voice, and the half-hourly news rhythm is the promise that no city hall decision, no traffic jam, no valley festival goes unreported. On Tuesdays from 6 to 7 pm the hour-long programme "Freifahrt" goes on air, and the legally mandated Bürgerfunk occupies the evenings from 7 to 9 pm. The remaining hours and the world news on the hour come from the Radio NRW framework, for which the station airs an hourly advertising block.

History

Radio Neandertal went on air on 15 September 1990 as the local station for the Kreis Mettmann, among the early wave of NRW locals licensed by the LfM. The district, Germany's most populous rural district, stretches in a crescent around Düsseldorf's eastern flank: Ratingen, Heiligenhaus, Velbert, Wülfrath, Mettmann, Erkrath, Haan, Hilden, Langenfeld and Monheim am Rhein, ten cities between the state capital, Wuppertal and Essen, each with its own identity and its own claim on the local news. It is a district of contrasts: the Ratingen business parks and the airport corridor, the Velbert lock and fittings industry, the Hilden and Haan commuter belts, the Monheim Rhine front with its ambitious urban redevelopment, the Mettmann old town and the Neandertal valley itself. A local station here must serve ten city halls, ten carnival traditions, ten football loyalties, and the half-hourly news is the instrument that keeps them all covered. The station's name reaches deeper into history than any of them: the Neandertal valley near Mettmann, where quarry workers found the bones in 1856 that gave Homo neanderthalensis its scientific name, though the Duden's spelling reform later cost the valley's most famous resident his "h". The valley's fame was a long time coming: for decades the presumed find area served as a scrapyard, the old museum drew only around 50,000 visitors a year, and the actual find site had been forgotten. Only with the reopening of the new Neanderthal Museum, the redesign of the rediscovered find site and the growing media interest did the valley return to public consciousness. The station that bears its name has been broadcasting through all of that rediscovery, and the valley's story, the ice-age hunters, the museum, the hiking trails, remains a staple of the local reporting.

The ownership structure reflects the NRW two-pillar model with a strong municipal and publishing presence. According to a North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament document, the district of Mettmann holds six percent and nine of the district's cities together nineteen percent of the station, with the Girardet Verlag at 16.5 percent, the Rheinisch-Bergische Verlagsgesellschaft at 36 percent and the Funke Mediengruppe at 20 percent. The technical and commercial operations run through the PFD service network that supports the Düsseldorf-area local stations.

Programming

The weekday local day is built around the two main shows: "Die Zwei am Morgen", the double-moderated morning programme from 6 to 10 am, and "Radio Neandertal am Nachmittag" from 3 to 6 pm. The half-hourly local news is the journalistic backbone, covering the ten cities of the district from the Ratingen business parks to the Monheim Rhine promenade, with weather and traffic every half and full hour keeping the commuters between Düsseldorf, Wuppertal and Essen informed. The commuters are the station's core audience: the district is a commuter belt, with tens of thousands driving daily into Düsseldorf, Wuppertal and Essen, and the traffic reports, the speed-camera warnings and the half-hourly news are the services that make the station indispensable on the morning drive. The Tuesday 6 to 7 pm hour "Freifahrt" adds a specialty programme to the schedule, and the Bürgerfunk evenings from 7 to 9 pm give the district's citizen broadcasters their daily platform.

The Radio NRW framework fills the night and the off-hours with the statewide programme and the world news on the hour. The station's local identity is carried by the Neandertal jingles and the self-designation as the listeners' local radio, the audio companion of the district that the rest of the world knows for the valley where humanity met its ancient cousin, and that the locals know for the ten cities, the commuter trains and the half-hourly news that keeps them all connected.

Organization and Ownership

Radio Neandertal operates within the NRW two-pillar system: programme responsibility with the local Veranstaltergemeinschaft, economic operation through the local Betriebsgesellschaft, in which the district, nine cities and the publishing houses Girardet, Rheinisch-Bergische Verlagsgesellschaft and Funke participate according to the state parliament documentation. The municipal stakes, six percent for the district and nineteen percent for the nine cities together, give the public hand a voice in the station's governance, while the publishing houses bring the media expertise and the economic weight. The technical and business services are outsourced to the PFD provider network. Tatjana Pioschyk leads the editorial team as Chefredakteurin. The studio's Mettmann base, near the Berufskolleg Neandertal and the Mettmann Stadtwald station, keeps the station in the heart of its coverage area, in the district capital that gives the valley and the station their administrative home.

Digital Presence

The web radio on radioneandertal.de and the free app carry the programme beyond the 97.6 MHz footprint, and the DAB+ distribution adds digital terrestrial reception. The website is the hub for the stream, the local news and the programme information, and the social media channels extend the morning show and the half-hourly news into the feeds. For the commuters on the A3, the A46 and the A59, the app means the district's news travels with them into Düsseldorf, Wuppertal and Essen, and for the valley's visitors, the stream carries the Neandertal's stories home.

Since September 1990, Radio Neandertal has been the local voice of the Kreis Mettmann: the morning duo, the afternoon programme, the half-hourly news from the ten cities, all under the editorial leadership of Tatjana Pioschyk, on 97.6 MHz, DAB+, cable, web radio and app, the station named after the valley where the Neanderthals were found, broadcasting for the district that the world knows for its most famous bones, every single day.
