About Hersbrucker Zeitung
Hersbrucker Zeitung
The Hersbrucker Zeitung (HZ) is a German local daily newspaper for the town of Hersbruck and the Hersbrucker Schweiz region in Bavaria. Founded in 1848, it is one of the older local newspapers in Franconia, with a publishing history of more than 175 years. The paper is published by the Hersbruck-based media house Hersbrucker Zeitung GmbH Verlag und Medienservice, formally the Pfeiffer Verlag und Medienservice GmbH & Co. KG, and appears Monday through Saturday with a sold circulation of around 4,878 copies, including a partial edition of the Nordbayerische Zeitung. It takes its national mantle pages from the Nürnberger Nachrichten while producing its own local section. The editor-in-chief is Katja Bub. The paper's digital home is its website at hersbrucker-zeitung.de, within the nordbayern.de network.
Overview
The Hersbrucker Zeitung is published six days a week as a subscription daily. Its distribution area is the Hersbrucker Schweiz, the northeastern part of the Franconian Jura in the district of Nürnberger Land: the town of Hersbruck, known for its 600-year brewing tradition, its historic old town and its hop-growing surroundings, and the villages of the Jura landscape between Nuremberg, Amberg and the Pegnitz valley. The paper describes itself as the Heimatblatt, the home paper, for the Hersbrucker Schweiz in community with the Nürnberger Nachrichten.
The paper follows the "Nürnberger Modell", the cooperation model of the Nürnberger Nachrichten with smaller home publishers in the region: the local editorial teams of the home publishers produce their own local sections while taking the general section, the mantle, entirely from the Nürnberger Nachrichten or the Nürnberger Zeitung. Under this model the Hersbrucker Zeitung carries its own title and its own local journalism while offering readers the complete national and international coverage of one of Germany's large regional newspapers. The publishers are Ursula Pfeiffer and the late Bruno Schnell.
The audience of the Hersbrucker Zeitung is the population of Hersbruck and the Hersbrucker Schweiz: households that value a daily paper deeply rooted in the Jura landscape, with a loyalty built over generations. With a circulation of 4,878 copies, the paper is a classic small-town daily whose strength lies in the density of its local reporting.
History
The Hersbrucker Zeitung was founded in 1848, the revolutionary year that liberalized the German press, as a local newspaper for Hersbruck and the surrounding Jura region. Across more than 175 years it accompanied the town through industrialization, the German Empire, two world wars and the post-war reconstruction, developing into the established home paper of the Hersbrucker Schweiz.
A defining moment in the paper's modern history came in July 1959, when Bruno Schnell, later the publisher of the Nürnberger Nachrichten, founded the Interessengemeinschaft der Nürnberger Nachrichten with six local Middle Franconian newspaper publishers. In this "Nürnberger Modell", the various local editorial teams of the home publishers produce their respective home sections while taking the general section entirely from the NN or NZ. The Hersbrucker Zeitung became one of the model's home editions alongside titles such as the Pegnitz-Zeitung in Lauf, Der Bote in Feucht, the Weißenburger Tagblatt, the Fränkischer Anzeiger in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and the Fränkische Landeszeitung in Ansbach. The model preserved the independence of the small home publishers while giving their readers the resources of the Nuremberg newsroom.
In 1998 the Hersbrucker Zeitung joined with the two other local newspapers of the Nürnberger Land district, Der Bote in Altdorf and the Pegnitz-Zeitung in Lauf, to form the Medienverbund Nürnberger Land (N-Land), from which the regional news site n-land.de emerged. The media house itself was taken over by the Verlag Nürnberger Presse Druckhaus Nürnberg, integrating the Hersbruck paper into the Nuremberg publishing group while preserving its title and local editorial office. Like nearly all German local dailies, the paper has lost circulation in recent decades, down 44.4 percent since 1998, yet it continues to appear daily as the home paper of the Hersbrucker Schweiz.
Coverage and Content
The local section of the Hersbrucker Zeitung covers Hersbruck and the Hersbrucker Schweiz. Regular topics include the town council and the district administration of the Nürnberger Land district, urban development in the historic brewing town, the regional economy with the Fackelmann household-goods company and the textile manufacturer Carl Gross headquartered in Hersbruck, the hop-growing tradition of the region, the brewing culture with the Bürgerbräu Hersbruck, schools and education, health care, the police blotter, club and association life, church news, culture and events, and local sport. The Jura landscape with its climbing rocks, caves and hiking trails gives leisure and tourism topics a regular presence.
The mantle pages supplied by the Nürnberger Nachrichten cover Middle Franconia, Bavarian state politics, German federal politics, international news, the economy, culture and sport. The Nürnberger Nachrichten, founded on 11 October 1945 with licence No. 3 from the American military government, is one of Germany's large regional newspapers with a circulation of around 178,925 copies, and its resources give the Hersbrucker Zeitung's readers comprehensive national coverage. Weekend editions carry expanded magazine content.
Advertising in the Hersbrucker Zeitung reaches households in Hersbruck and the Hersbrucker Schweiz precisely, making the paper an important medium for local retailers, craftsmen, service providers, the real-estate market and job advertisements. The N-Land media network extends the advertising offering across the Nürnberger Land district.
Organization and Ownership
The Hersbrucker Zeitung is published by the Hersbrucker Zeitung GmbH Verlag und Medienservice, formally the Pfeiffer Verlag und Medienservice GmbH & Co. KG, based in Hersbruck. The publishers are Ursula Pfeiffer and the late Bruno Schnell, the long-time publisher of the Nürnberger Nachrichten who shaped the "Nürnberger Modell". The editor-in-chief is Katja Bub. The media house was taken over by the Verlag Nürnberger Presse Druckhaus Nürnberg GmbH & Co. KG, the Nuremberg publishing group behind the Nürnberger Nachrichten and the Nürnberger Zeitung.
The paper is printed in the group's production facilities and distributed to subscribers each morning from Monday to Saturday across Hersbruck and the Hersbrucker Schweiz. The subscription model dominates sales, with a sold circulation of around 4,878 copies including a partial edition of the Nordbayerische Zeitung. The paper operates within the Nuremberg group's shared services for printing, distribution, digital publishing and advertising sales, while the Hersbruck newsroom retains editorial responsibility for the local pages that define the paper's identity as the home paper of the Hersbrucker Schweiz.
Digital Presence
The digital home of the Hersbrucker Zeitung is its website at hersbrucker-zeitung.de, within the nordbayern.de network of the Nuremberg publishing group. Readers can follow reporting from Hersbruck and the Hersbrucker Schweiz on the website, in the group's news app and through the e-paper edition, which reproduces the printed paper page for page for reading on tablets, smartphones and computers. The N-Land portal at n-land.de, founded in 1998 as the joint online offering of the Hersbrucker Zeitung, Der Bote and the Pegnitz-Zeitung, serves as the regional news site for the Nürnberger Land district.
The portal operates on the paid-content model: full article texts are generally reserved for subscribers, while headlines and teasers are visible to all visitors. On social media, the paper's channels share local headlines from the Hersbrucker Schweiz and engage with readers. For the Hersbrucker Zeitung, digital channels serve readers within the distribution area who prefer to read on their phones as well as former residents who have moved away but want to stay informed about their home region. The printed paper remains the core product, carrying forward a publishing tradition that began in 1848.
