About Recklinghäuser Zeitung

Recklinghäuser Zeitung

The Recklinghäuser Zeitung is the leading daily newspaper of the Recklinghausen district in the northern Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia. Founded in 1831, it is among the oldest continuously published newspapers in the Ruhr area and appears Monday through Saturday in six local editions that share an identical national and regional section under different local titles. Published by the Marl-based Medienhaus Bauer — in which the Dortmund publishing group Lensing Media has held a forty-percent stake since 1976 — the paper reports a sold circulation of just over thirty thousand copies and dominates its home market after the withdrawal of its long-time rival, the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, from local reporting in the district in 2006.

Overview

The Recklinghäuser Zeitung serves the Kreis Recklinghausen, the most populous district in Germany with more than six hundred thousand inhabitants, covering the cities of Recklinghausen, Marl, Herten, Datteln, Waltrop, Oer-Erkenschwick and Haltern am See. It appears in six local editions, each carrying the same supraregional "mantle" pages but published under local names tailored to its city — a structure that gives the paper deep roots in each community while sharing the costs of national and regional production. The paper appears in Rhenish format and is firmly subscription-based, reflecting its status as the traditional household newspaper of the northern Ruhr.

With a sold circulation of 30,046 copies, the Recklinghäuser Zeitung has lost 59.7 percent of its sales since 1998 — a steep decline even by the standards of German regional dailies — yet it remains the undisputed market leader in its district. Its dominance was cemented in 2006, when the WAZ media group decided to close its local editorial offices in Datteln, Waltrop, Oer-Erkenschwick, Haltern, Herten and Marl, effectively ceding local journalism in much of the district to the Recklinghäuser Zeitung. The paper produces its regional and supraregional pages independently, cooperates with the Ruhr Nachrichten on distribution, and works together with the WAZ on local editorial matters — a pragmatic arrangement in a consolidated regional market.

History

The Recklinghäuser Zeitung was first published in 1831, making it one of the oldest newspapers in the Ruhr region — older than the industrialization that would transform the area into Germany's coal and steel heartland. Through the nineteenth century it chronicled the growth of Recklinghausen from a modest district town into an industrial center, and through the twentieth it reported on the Weimar Republic, the National Socialist period, wartime destruction and the postwar reconstruction of the Ruhr.

In the postwar decades the paper's defining relationship was its rivalry with the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) of Essen, the giant of the Ruhr press, which maintained local editions competing head-to-head with the Recklinghäuser Zeitung in the district's cities. That competition ended abruptly in 2006, when the WAZ group closed its local newsrooms in six district cities — Datteln, Waltrop, Oer-Erkenschwick, Haltern, Herten and Marl — leaving the Recklinghäuser Zeitung as the only daily with full local editorial coverage across the district. The paper's ownership structure has been stable for decades: since 1976 the Dortmund-based Medienhaus Lensing — publisher of the Ruhr Nachrichten and today operating as Lensing Media — has held forty percent of the Verlag J. Bauer KG in Marl, the paper's publishing company, with the remaining shares held by the Bauer family interests of Marl.

The Medienhaus Bauer of Marl should not be confused with the Bauer Media Group of Hamburg, the international magazine publisher founded in 1875 — the two companies are entirely separate, sharing only a common surname. Under the Bauer family's stewardship in Marl, the Recklinghäuser Zeitung has navigated the digital transformation of the regional press, building its online edition at recklinghaeuser-zeitung.de while maintaining its print editions as the core of its business.

Coverage and Content

The Recklinghäuser Zeitung's editorial identity is built on comprehensive local coverage of the Recklinghausen district, delivered through its six local editions. Each edition reports on its city's council and administration, schools, clubs and associations, local businesses and the everyday life of the northern Ruhr — a region in long-term structural transition from coal mining to new industries, where topics such as the repurposing of former colliery sites, the development of the Hohe Mark nature park and the district's role within the Ruhr metropolitan region feature prominently. Haltern am See, with its lakes and forests, gives the paper a distinctive leisure and tourism beat unusual for the Ruhr.

The shared mantle pages provide coverage of North Rhine-Westphalia state politics from Düsseldorf, national and international news, business, culture and sport — including the fortunes of the region's football clubs, from Schalke 04 in neighboring Gelsenkirchen to Borussia Dortmund. The paper produces these regional and supraregional pages independently in its own newsroom, a point of editorial pride that distinguishes it from titles that buy in their entire mantle from a central desk. Special pages, series and supplements accompany local elections, anniversaries and major regional events, and the paper's reporting extends to the district's strong carnival traditions, its theater scene — Recklinghausen hosts the renowned Ruhrfestspiele theater festival — and the industrial heritage that shapes local identity.

Organization and Ownership

The Recklinghäuser Zeitung is published by the Verlag J. Bauer KG, operating as the Medienhaus Bauer GmbH and Co. KG, based in Marl. The Bauer family of Marl controls the majority of the publishing company, while Lensing Media of Dortmund — the publishing group behind the Ruhr Nachrichten, founded by the Lensing brothers in 1870 — has held a forty-percent stake since 1976. This ownership structure gives the paper the backing of a larger regional group while preserving the independence of its Marl-based management and editorial operation.

The editor-in-chief and publisher (Herausgeber) is Volker Stennei, who leads both the editorial and the publishing strategy of the paper. The newsroom is organized around the six local editions, with local desks in the district's cities producing the community-specific pages and a central team producing the shared regional and supraregional sections. Printing is handled through the group's production facilities. The paper cooperates with the Ruhr Nachrichten on distribution and logistics, and on local editorial matters it works together with the WAZ — the former rival whose withdrawal from the district in 2006 reshaped the market. Precise current staffing figures are not publicly confirmed.

Digital Presence

The paper's website, recklinghaeuser-zeitung.de, is the digital home of the Recklinghäuser Zeitung, offering local news from across the district alongside the regional and national coverage. The site operates on the standard regional-daily model: a mix of freely accessible articles and subscriber-only content, with the e-paper available as a digital replica of the printed editions and digital subscriptions offered as an alternative to print delivery. Breaking-news alerts, newsletters and the paper's social media channels extend the reach of its local journalism to readers who no longer take a print subscription.

The digital strategy reflects the paper's market position: as the dominant local news brand in the Recklinghausen district, its website competes less with other newspapers than with the free news offerings of public broadcasters and social platforms, and its paywalled local exclusives — council decisions, planning documents, local investigations — are the content that converts readers to subscribers. The integration of the six local editions into a single digital platform allows the paper to serve each city's readers with tailored local news while presenting a unified brand to advertisers. In a district where the paper has been the household newspaper for generations, the digital edition is increasingly the channel through which younger readers encounter the Recklinghäuser Zeitung.
