About Antenne Düsseldorf
Antenne Düsseldorf
Antenne Düsseldorf is the private local radio station for the city of Düsseldorf, capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, broadcasting a pop-based local format under the slogan "100% von hier" — one hundred percent from here. On air since 7 October 1990 under licence from the state media authority, it is one of the veteran stations of North Rhine-Westphalia's local-radio system. The station transmits on FM 104.2 MHz across the city area, on cable, via internet live stream, and — since 18 December 2025 — on DAB+ digital radio. On weekdays it produces around eight hours of its own local programming with city news, interviews, sport and service information, while the remaining hours carry the statewide Radio NRW framework programme. Marketing is handled by Pressefunk Düsseldorf GmbH, a subsidiary of the Rheinische Post newspaper group, which also looks after other local stations in the Düsseldorf conurbation.
Overview
Antenne Düsseldorf serves one of Germany's most economically dynamic cities: the state capital on the Rhine, home to the fashion industry, advertising agencies, the Japanese business community, the carnival stronghold of the Rhineland and Fortuna Düsseldorf football club. The station's local programming reflects that urban identity, with city politics from the Rathaus, business news, cultural coverage spanning the museums, theatres and the Tonhalle, and the social calendar of Germany's "longest bar in the world", the Altstadt. The music format is mainstream pop — current hits mixed with familiar favourites — designed as a broad-appeal daytime companion for the city's commuters, office workers and shoppers.
Reception has been a long-running technical story. The station broadcasts on 104.2 MHz; since March 2018 the transmitter has been located in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim at the Rotthäuser Weg tower with 1.3 kilowatts of power, after the previous site in Düsseltal on Sohnstraße — a Telekom building — was demolished and reception in the inner city had deteriorated noticeably. Earlier, the power had been raised in stages from 100 watts at launch to 200 watts, then one kilowatt and finally two kilowatts in December 2007, though the low antenna height at the old site limited the benefit. A trial support frequency on 105.4 MHz in 2019 was switched off again after a few weeks when no lasting improvement could be demonstrated, and the radiation pattern at the Gerresheim tower was adjusted instead. The programme is also carried on cable at 94.45 MHz in Düsseldorf and in the cable networks of Duisburg, the Mettmann district and the Rhein-Kreis Neuss, and the DAB+ launch in December 2025 on the NRW2 6 DWM channel finally gave the station a robust digital terrestrial footprint.
History
Antenne Düsseldorf went on air on 7 October 1990 as the local radio for the state capital, licensed by the Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen. It was part of the first great wave of private local radio in Germany's most populous state, following the launch of the NRW local-radio system earlier that year. Test transmissions had initially used 104.1 MHz, but long-distance interference from a Dutch programme on the same frequency transmitting from Arnhem forced a change to 104.2 MHz shortly before launch — an early illustration of the crowded FM band in the Rhine-Ruhr border region.
The station established itself quickly as the commercial local voice of Düsseldorf, operating within the state's two-pillar model: a local association holding the licence and an operating company running the business, with the Radio NRW framework programme supplying the non-local hours. In 2013 Christian Zeelen became editor-in-chief, a role he has held since. The transmitter moves of the 2010s — from the demolished Düsseltal site to Gerresheim in 2018 — were the most visible chapters of recent station history, accompanied by the ultimately unsuccessful 105.4 MHz experiment in 2019. The addition of DAB+ distribution on 18 December 2025 marked the station's entry into the digital terrestrial era, more than 35 years after its FM debut.
Programming
On weekdays Antenne Düsseldorf produces around eight hours of local programming, concentrated in the morning show and afternoon drivetime — the dayparts where local radio earns its audience. The local hours carry the station's own presenters with city news from Düsseldorf's districts, from the Altstadt to Benrath and Kaiserswerth: council politics, urban development projects such as the Kö-Bogen and the harbour district, business news from the city's corporate headquarters, and cultural coverage of the carnival season, the Japan Day, the Christmas markets and the trade fairs at Messe Düsseldorf. Interviews with local figures from politics, business, sport and culture are a staple, as are listener campaigns and on-air promotions tied to city events.
Sport coverage centres on Fortuna Düsseldorf, the city's traditional football club, alongside the DEG ice hockey team and the city's other sporting institutions. Service elements include weather and traffic for one of Germany's most congested commuter regions, with the Rhine bridges and the motorway ring as perennial topics. Outside the local windows, the Radio NRW framework programme provides the music flow, national news, comedy and networked features, branded on air with Antenne Düsseldorf jingles. In line with North Rhine-Westphalian media law, the station also carries Bürgerfunk — non-commercial citizen radio produced by local groups — in its evening schedule, giving community producers access to the city's FM frequency.
Organization and Ownership
Antenne Düsseldorf operates within the North Rhine-Westphalian two-pillar system: the licence is held by a local Veranstaltergemeinschaft, while the commercial operation is run by a Betriebsgesellschaft. Advertising sales and marketing are outsourced to Pressefunk Düsseldorf GmbH, a subsidiary of the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe, the regional newspaper publisher; Pressefunk also handles marketing for other local stations in the Düsseldorf metropolitan area, creating a combined sales offering for the region. This close newspaper-radio linkage is characteristic of the NRW local-radio landscape, where regional publishers are typically among the shareholders of the local operating companies.
Editorial leadership has been provided by editor-in-chief Christian Zeelen since 2013. The station is financed through advertising sold to Düsseldorf businesses and through the statewide Radio NRW advertising blocks that run in the framework hours. Regulatory oversight rests with the Landesanstalt für Medien NRW in Düsseldorf — the very authority that licensed the station in 1990 and now supervises its FM, cable and DAB+ operations under the state media act. Detailed current shareholder breakdowns beyond the published imprint have not been independently confirmed.
Digital Presence
The station's website at antenneduesseldorf.de serves as the digital newsroom and streaming hub, offering the live programme, local news articles from the Düsseldorf newsroom, programme and presenter information, event tips and podcasts of selected features. The live stream makes the station available to Düsseldorfers living elsewhere and to commuters beyond the FM coverage area. Antenne Düsseldorf is listed on the major radio aggregator apps and smart-speaker platforms, and since December 2025 its DAB+ presence gives it digital terrestrial distribution alongside FM and cable.
On social media the station maintains active channels with city news updates, programme highlights, traffic information and coverage of Düsseldorf events from carnival to the trade fairs. The website's news section functions as a compact city news portal, extending the radio newsroom's output into text and images. For a city station, Antenne Düsseldorf maintains the full digital toolkit of modern German local radio: stream, website newsroom, social channels, on-demand audio and app distribution, complementing the FM 104.2 signal that has served the state capital since 1990.
