About Antenne Sylt

Antenne Sylt

Antenne Sylt is a private radio station for the North Frisian island of Sylt in Schleswig-Holstein, broadcasting a rock- and pop-oriented information and entertainment programme with a Sylt focus. Licensed nationwide by the Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein media authority but de facto a regional station, it serves the island, the city of Hamburg and the adjacent mainland via FM, DAB+ digital radio, cable and internet live stream. The station began in November 2010 as a web radio, later gained a terrestrial DAB+ frequency in Hamburg and broadcast on Sylt FM each summer under event licences, before merging in February 2019 with the insolvent local competitor Syltfunk into a new joint programme broadcast from the "Funkhaus Sylt" in Westerland. Its music promise is "bester Rock 'n' Pop für die schönste Insel der Welt" — the best rock 'n' pop for the most beautiful island in the world — spanning the seventies to today, carried within the framework programme of Radio 21 from Garbsen, which splits its output regionally up to fifteen times per hour.

Overview

Antenne Sylt broadcasts from Germany's most famous North Sea island: Sylt, the elongated dune island of thatched Frisian houses, the Westerland promenade, the Sansibar beach restaurants and a summer population that multiplies many times over. The station's identity is inseparable from the island — its programming carries island news, tourism information, event coverage and the seasonal rhythms of a place that lives from its guests, while its music format of rock 'n' pop from the seventies through the current charts provides the soundtrack. The operator is Antenne Sylt GmbH, based at Friedrichstraße 14 in Sylt-Westerland, with Steffen Müller named as managing director in public sources.

Distribution reflects the station's hybrid history: FM frequencies on Sylt itself — inherited from the merged Syltfunk — DAB+ in the Sylt-Ost, Flensburg and Harrislee areas as well as in Hamburg, cable carriage, and the worldwide internet live stream. The programme's framework comes from Radio 21 in Garbsen near Hanover, a rock station organized as a local programme network: its output is split regionally up to fifteen times per hour, so that advertising, news and features can differ by region, with local advertising blocks financing the Sylt-specific content. As a commercial private broadcaster, the station lives from advertising sold to the island's tourism economy — hotels, restaurants, retailers and event organizers — as well as to mainland businesses.

History

Antenne Sylt started in November 2010 as a web radio for the island, founded with the ambition of giving Sylt its own station. In the following years it obtained a terrestrial DAB+ frequency in Hamburg — giving the island brand a mainland foothold in Germany's second-largest city — and from 2010 onwards it broadcast on Sylt FM each summer under event licences, becoming a familiar seasonal voice on the island. When FM frequencies on Sylt and in Niebüll were tendered, however, the station lost out to a new competitor: Syltfunk, which had started on the internet in 2009 and launched a 24-hour FM programme on 1 June 2016 as the first private local radio in Schleswig-Holstein with a full-day schedule, naming itself after the Sölring dialect of Sylt Frisian.

Syltfunk filed for insolvency at the Niebüll district court on 31 July 2018, though broadcasting continued into early 2019. In October 2018 Antenne Sylt had begun carrying the framework programme of Radio 21 from Garbsen. After Syltfunk's insolvency, a new ownership structure was created around the insolvent station, and both broadcasters were united by a new organizer consortium in the "Funkhaus Sylt". On 11 February 2019 the new joint programme went on air under the established name Antenne Sylt, combining Syltfunk's two FM frequencies on the island with Antenne Sylt's brand, DAB+ presence and Radio 21 framework. The merger ended the island's brief era of two competing commercial stations and created a single, stronger Sylt radio.

Programming

The music format is rock 'n' pop from the seventies to the present: honest, handmade guitar music from the giants of rock — AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Genesis, Guns N' Roses, Queen, Nirvana, U2, the Rolling Stones, Bryan Adams and their peers — alongside hourly "concert crackers" and current titles from the rock and alternative charts. The Radio 21 framework provides the musical backbone and national rock programming, while the regional splits insert Sylt-specific content: island news, tourism information, weather and surf reports, event tips and local advertising.

Island news covers the issues of a community shaped by tourism: the seasonal economy, the housing market squeezed by holiday rentals, coastal protection and the shifting dunes, the island's transport links — the Hindenburgdamm rail causeway, the ferries, the small Westerland airport — and the social calendar from the summer festivals to the New Year's Eve celebrations. The station also follows the island's sporting life, from the windsurfing world cup events to local football, and reports on the environmental debates that matter to an island community living with the North Sea: beach nourishment, dune protection and the balance between tourism growth and nature conservation in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Service information is tailored to guests and islanders alike: beach weather, water temperatures, event recommendations and traffic on the island's limited road network. The tone is sunny, relaxed and island-proud, matching the self-image of Germany's most glamorous North Sea destination.

Organization and Ownership

Antenne Sylt is operated by Antenne Sylt GmbH, based in Sylt-Westerland, with Steffen Müller named as managing director in public sources. The company holds a nationwide broadcasting licence from the Medienanstalt Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein (MA HSH), though the station operates de facto as a regional service for Sylt, Hamburg and the adjacent mainland. The 2019 merger brought together the Antenne Sylt operation with the assets of the insolvent Syltfunk — whose managing director had also been Steffen Müller — under a new organizer consortium broadcasting from the Funkhaus Sylt.

The programming partnership with Radio 21 in Garbsen supplies the framework programme, whose regional-split technology enables the Sylt-specific windows within the rock format. Regulatory oversight lies with the MA HSH. As a commercial private broadcaster, Antenne Sylt is financed through advertising, with the island's tourism economy as its core market. Detailed current shareholder information has not been publicly confirmed.

Digital Presence

The station's website at antenne-sylt.de is the digital home of the island station, carrying the live internet stream, programme information, island news and event tips. The stream extends the FM and DAB+ footprint worldwide, serving Sylt lovers, second-home owners and former guests wherever they are — a significant audience for an island whose fan community spans the whole of Germany. The station is listed on the major radio aggregator apps and smart-speaker platforms.

On social media Antenne Sylt maintains channels with island news, beach and weather updates, programme highlights and the visual imagery of Sylt life — dunes, sunsets, the Westerland promenade — that reinforces the brand far beyond the broadcast area. The website functions as a compact island portal alongside its radio role. For a station whose identity is a place, the digital presence is the bridge between the island and its dispersed community: Antenne Sylt on the air in Westerland, and in the pocket of every Sylt fan with a smartphone — from the daily commuters on the Hindenburgdamm to the summer guests planning next year's eagerly awaited return.
