About Augusta Krankenhausfunk

Augusta Krankenhausfunk

Augusta Krankenhausfunk — abbreviated AKF, full name Augusta Krankenhausfunk und Fernsehen — is the hospital radio and television service of the Augusta-Kranken-Anstalt in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia. Founded at Easter 1982 by the hospital chaplain Hartwig Burgdörfer, it is one of Germany's long-running volunteer hospital broadcasters, produced by unpaid helpers for the patients of the Augusta hospitals. Several times a week the volunteers broadcast request concerts, local news and entertainment programmes into the patient rooms; the chapel services can be followed from bed, by audio since the beginning and by camera transmission since 1987; and every morning a short devotion opens the broadcast day. The station is part of the Evangelische Stiftung Augusta, the Protestant foundation that operates the Augusta hospitals in Bochum and Hattingen.

Overview

Augusta Krankenhausfunk serves the patients of the Augusta-Kranken-Anstalt in Bochum-Mitte — a hospital with 486 beds in fourteen specialist departments — and the wider Augusta hospital family, which includes the geriatric clinic in Bochum-Linden and the Protestant hospital in Hattingen. Around 16,000 inpatients and 20,000 outpatients pass through the Bochum hospitals each year, and the hospital radio is aimed squarely at making their stay more bearable: familiar music, greetings between wards, local news from the city, and the spiritual offerings of the hospital chaplaincy. The service is deliberately low-tech and personal — volunteers with microphones rather than a professional broadcast operation — which is precisely its strength at the bedside.

The programme's fixed points include the request concerts, in which patients dedicate songs to fellow patients, relatives and nursing staff; local news and reports from Bochum; entertainment programmes; and the religious strand — the morning devotions broadcast daily and the transmission of the chapel services for patients who cannot leave their rooms. Since 1987 the services have also been transmitted by camera, so bedridden patients can not only hear but see the chapel service. The television component of AKF extends this in-house media offering. As a volunteer service, AKF carries no advertising and is sustained by the commitment of its helpers and the support of the hospital chaplaincy.

History

The Augusta-Kranken-Anstalt itself was founded in 1864 on the initiative of Protestant citizens of Bochum, opening with twelve beds in a house on Brückstraße; in 1867 the institution acquired land between Castroper Straße and Bergstraße, and in 1870 the hundred-bed Haus A was occupied. The hospital grew with the industrial city around it through population growth, wars and epidemics, becoming one of Bochum's major hospitals and today an academic teaching hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Hospital broadcasting arrived more than a century later. In 1981 Hartwig Burgdörfer became the Protestant hospital chaplain of the Augusta hospital, succeeding a line of chaplains stretching back to the first Bochum hospital chaplain appointed in 1954. Burgdörfer persuaded the hospital management to renovate the dilapidated chapel and convert its dusty vestry into a consultation room — and at Easter 1982 he founded the Augusta-Krankenhaus-Funk, housed in the stairwell leading up to the chapel gallery. From that modest studio, volunteers began broadcasting request concerts, local news and entertainment programmes several times a week for the patients. The chapel services could from the start be heard in the patient rooms; in 1987 camera transmission was added so they could also be seen. Every morning a short devotion has been broadcast since the early days. When the chapel was renovated again for the 125th anniversary of the Augusta-Kranken-Anstalt in 1989, cables for television transmission were laid into the walls, supporting the service's expansion into AKF — Augusta Krankenhausfunk und Fernsehen. The carrier of the hospitals, the Evangelische Stiftung Augusta, was formally recognized as a foundation in December 2003, named after Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.

Programming

The AKF programme is built around the needs and rhythms of hospital life. The request concerts are the heart of the service: patients phone in or send messages dedicating songs to other patients, to relatives at home, or to the nurses and doctors on their ward — a small ritual of connection that matters greatly in the isolation of a hospital stay. Local news and reports from Bochum keep patients in touch with the city outside, while entertainment programmes provide diversion. The religious programming reflects the Protestant character of the Augusta foundation: the daily morning devotions and the transmitted chapel services, available by audio and — since 1987 — by video in every patient room.

The volunteers who make the programmes are the service's defining feature: unpaid helpers, many of them long-serving, who give their time several times a week to sit behind the microphone in the chapel-gallery studio. Their presentation is personal and unpolished in the best sense — neighbours talking to neighbours, rather than professional broadcasters performing for an audience. Special programmes mark the church calendar, hospital anniversaries and the Christmas season, when the request concerts take on a festive character. New volunteers are continually welcomed: the station's history shows that the microphone in the chapel stairwell has been handed from one generation of helpers to the next for more than four decades, each bringing their own musical tastes and their own way of talking to patients.

Organization and Ownership

Augusta Krankenhausfunk is operated within the Evangelische Stiftung Augusta, the Protestant foundation based in Bochum whose purpose is the promotion of education in healthcare, religion, public health and nursing and elderly care. The foundation operates three hospitals — the Augusta-Kranken-Anstalt in Bochum, the geriatric clinic in Bochum-Linden and the Protestant hospital in Hattingen — along with outpatient nursing services and senior homes, employing around a thousand people in Bochum alone. The hospital radio grew out of the hospital chaplaincy: founded by chaplain Hartwig Burgdörfer in 1982, it has remained closely tied to the pastoral care of the hospitals.

The service is run by volunteers and carries no advertising; it is sustained by voluntary labour and the institutional support of the foundation and the chaplaincy. Public sources do not name current individual managers of the AKF operation, and the station's public presentation — through its website at akf-bochum.de.tl — emphasizes the volunteer collective rather than personalities.

Digital Presence

The AKF website at akf-bochum.de.tl presents the hospital radio and television service, its history and its volunteer opportunities. As an in-house patient service, AKF's primary distribution remains the hospital's internal networks — the bedside audio and video systems that carry the request concerts, devotions and chapel services into the patient rooms. The website extends the service's visibility beyond the wards, documenting its four-decade history and inviting new volunteers to join. It also serves relatives: families who cannot visit in person can learn about the service that keeps their loved ones company, and former patients sometimes return as volunteers themselves, completing a circle that has sustained the Augusta Krankenhausfunk since 1982.

For a hospital broadcaster, the digital footprint is modest by design: the audience is by definition inside the hospital, and the service's purpose is presence at the bedside rather than reach. Yet the website ensures that the Augusta Krankenhausfunk — founded in a chapel stairwell at Easter 1982 — is findable and contactable for former patients, relatives and prospective volunteers, keeping the volunteer tradition visible in the digital age. In an era of streaming abundance, the AKF model remains strikingly analog in the best sense: real people, in the same building as their listeners, choosing music for someone in the next ward.
