About Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung

Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung

The Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung is the local daily newspaper of the northern Tecklenburger Land in the Steinfurt district of North Rhine-Westphalia, published in Ibbenbüren by the ivz.medien GmbH & Co. KG. First published on 14 December 1898 and appearing daily except Sundays and holidays with a sold circulation of 14,743 copies, it is the daily of the Tecklenburg region's largest town and its surrounding municipalities. Published in the Rhenish format at a cover price of two euros, the paper serves Ibbenbüren, Hörstel, Hopsten, Mettingen, Recke and Tecklenburg with local journalism produced in its Ibbenbüren newsroom. Its online portal ivz-aktuell.de extends the daily's reporting to the digital world.

Overview

The Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung appears Monday to Saturday as the subscription daily for the northern Tecklenburger Land. Its sold circulation stands at 14,743 copies, a decline of only 13 percent since 1998, one of the most stable circulation trajectories in the German regional press. The distribution area covers the northern part of the Steinfurt district: the towns of Ibbenbüren, Hörstel and Tecklenburg and the municipalities of Hopsten, Mettingen and Recke. The paper is sold mainly by subscription, and its publishing house maintains two company locations in Ibbenbüren: the press house in the town centre, with the newsroom, the digital division and the ZettPunkt central contact point for citizens, readers and subscribers at Bahnhofstraße 15, and the publishing house outside the centre.

The readership of the Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung is the population of the northern Tecklenburger Land: the citizens of Ibbenbüren, the largest town in the Tecklenburger Land, the former miners and their families, the commuters who work in Osnabrück or Rheine, and the engaged citizens of the municipalities' councils, clubs and churches. The region's identity is shaped by the former coal mining, by the Teutoburg Forest's northern foothills, by the Catholic character of the Münsterland, and by the A30 motorway. The paper's local journalism is the medium in which this region's public life is conducted.

History

The Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung was founded by Theodor Rieping, a bookbinder and merchant, and Franz Brockmeyer, the first editor-in-chief, and it appeared for the first time on 14 December 1898 with a trial edition for subscription advertising. A year later, 41 merchants, craftsmen and farmers founded the Ibbenbürener Vereinsdruckerei GmbH, and the paper appeared three days a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; the subscription price was 75 pfennigs per quarter. From the beginning the paper also had subscribers abroad, mainly in the Netherlands.

The publishing house developed into the ivz.medien GmbH & Co. KG, the publisher of the Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung, the ivz-aktuell.de online portal and the ivz-aktuell and ivz-ePaper apps. The publisher was Klaus-Harald Wichelhoven until his death on 1 May 2008; the newsroom is led by the editor-in-chief Torsten Lehmann. The paper's weekly advertising companion is the Ibbenbürener Anzeiger, and the publishing house's local blog Ibb.town has published podcasts and articles on local events since April 2009. The Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung continues as the daily of the northern Tecklenburger Land, its 1898 founding making it one of the long-established dailies of the Münsterland.

Coverage and Content

The Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung covers the public life of the northern Tecklenburger Land with the thoroughness of a dedicated regional daily. The town councils of Ibbenbüren, Hörstel and Tecklenburg and the municipal councils of Hopsten, Mettingen and Recke form a core beat, as does the Steinfurt district administration. The paper reports on the structural change after the end of coal mining, the region's defining economic theme, on the development of the former mining areas, on agriculture and the rural municipalities, and on the transport connections to Osnabrück, Rheine and the A30. The courts, including the Ibbenbüren district court in its listed building on Münsterstraße, the police and the emergency services are covered as a matter of course.

A distinctive theme of the paper's reporting is the mining heritage: the former miners, the mining associations and the conversion of the colliery sites give the paper's local pages a recurring historical frame. The paper follows the community life of the area: the volunteer fire services, the sports clubs and their leagues, the churches and their congregations in the Catholic-shaped Münsterland, and the cultural associations and traditional festivals. The regional, national and international news, the business pages and the supra-regional sports coverage round out the daily. Family announcements, event listings and the classified and display advertising complete the paper.

The paper's local sports pages follow the district's football leagues and the handball clubs, and its coverage of the Teutoburg Forest's hiking country reflects the region's leisure identity. Like the classic regional daily, the Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung reports on the schools and kindergartens, on the local clubs' anniversaries, and its readers' letters and service pages give the Tecklenburger Land's citizens a direct voice.

Organization and Ownership

The Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung is published by the ivz.medien GmbH & Co. KG, based in Ibbenbüren, the largest town in the Tecklenburger Land. The newsroom is led by the editor-in-chief Torsten Lehmann; the publisher was Klaus-Harald Wichelhoven until his death on 1 May 2008. The publishing house maintains two company locations in Ibbenbüren: the press house in the town centre at Bahnhofstraße 15, housing the newsroom, the digital division and the ZettPunkt central contact point, and the publishing house outside the centre. The company's LinkedIn profile describes its specialities as local newspaper, media company, agency, marketing, news and digital.

The publishing house's portfolio includes the Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung daily, the ivz-aktuell.de online portal, the ivz-aktuell and ivz-ePaper apps, and the weekly advertising paper Ibbenbürener Anzeiger. Financial details of the privately held company are not publicly disclosed; the paper's economics rest on subscriptions, regional advertising and the digital revenues of the ivz-aktuell.de portal.

Digital Presence

The Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung's digital home is ivz-aktuell.de, the interactive news and information portal for the Tecklenburger Land. The portal carries current local reporting from midnight, with an archive function for older articles going back to 2001, extending the daily's journalism to readers on desktop and mobile devices. The paper is published as an e-paper and through the ivz-aktuell and ivz-ePaper apps, reproducing the printed edition page for page for reading on smartphone, tablet or computer.

As a subscription daily, much of the digital content is reserved for registered and paying readers, while selected local stories remain freely accessible. The publishing house's digital products include newsletters and breaking-news alerts for the region, and the paper's local journalism circulates through social media channels, including the Ibb.town local blog's podcasts. For the readers of the northern Tecklenburger Land, the digital Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung is the online companion to the printed daily: the region's news on the phone from midnight, the e-paper on the tablet in the morning, and the ivz-aktuell.de portal as the continuous news service for the Tecklenburger Land between editions.

In December 2023 the Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung marked 125 years since its first edition, a milestone few German local dailies reach with their original title and publishing house intact. The anniversary underlined the paper's unusual stability: while many regional dailies lost a third or more of their circulation since the late 1990s, the Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung's decline of 13 percent since 1998 is among the mildest in the German regional press. The paper documented the Tecklenburger Land's transformation from a mining region to a diversified economic landscape, and its archive, reaching back through the ivz-aktuell.de portal to 2001, preserves a quarter-century of the region's digital-era history.
