About bigFM Baden-Württemberg

bigFM Baden-Württemberg

bigFM Baden-Württemberg is the founding station of the bigFM network — Germany's largest private radio brand for young adults — broadcasting from Mannheim across Baden-Württemberg since 1 April 2000. What began as a new youth radio for the German southwest has grown into a multi-state network spanning Baden-Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, the Saarland, Berlin, Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Bremen and Nordrhein-Westfalen, with the original Baden-Württemberg programme as its home base. The format is rhythmic contemporary: pop, rock, dance, hip-hop and rap aimed at young adults, complemented by late-night talk formats that have become institutions in their own right. According to Media-Analyse 2026 Audio I, bigFM reaches around 476,000 listeners per hour, making it the biggest private youth station in the country. In 2022 the network's administrative headquarters moved from Stuttgart to Mannheim.

Overview

bigFM Baden-Württemberg is the heart of a brand that markets itself as the soundtrack of young Germany. The programme is built around a high-energy rhythmic-contemporary music mix — current hits and recent chart titles from pop, dance, hip-hop and rap, with rock and R&B currents — presented by a young on-air team with a deliberately bold, provocative tone. The audience is young adults, above all the 14-to-39 demographic that commercial radio's planners prize: students, trainees and young professionals across the state's cities and commuter belts. The flagship is the morning show, billed as Germany's biggest morning show, alongside daytime music blocks and the late-night call-in formats that define the brand's personality: the Nightlounge, weeknights from midnight to 2 a.m., and the Sunday Night Talk from 10:45 p.m. to midnight — open-phone talk shows devoted to the problems, stories and confessions of young listeners.

The station broadcasts across Baden-Württemberg on a dense FM network — including 89.5 MHz in Stuttgart, 87.8 MHz in Mannheim, 90.9 MHz in Heidelberg, 105.2 MHz in Karlsruhe, 102.8 MHz in Freiburg, 99.7 MHz in Ulm, 89.7 MHz in Tübingen and 104.7 MHz in Heilbronn — and statewide on DAB+ in the 11B multiplex. Additional frequencies in Rottweil (99.0), Villingen-Schwenningen (99.5), Aalen (105.1), Göppingen (100.3), Sinsheim (97.2) and Baden-Baden (103.8) fill the gaps between the major cities, giving the programme near-statewide terrestrial coverage. The Baden-Württemberg licence is the foundation on which the wider bigFM expansion was built: the programme concept, the morning show and the night-talk formats developed here were exported as the brand grew into other states.

History

bigFM launched on 1 April 2000 as a new youth radio for southwestern Germany, created in a phase when the state media authorities were deliberately licensing youth-oriented programmes to diversify the radio landscape. The station was based in the Mannheim area and quickly established its signature mix of rhythmic music and confrontational late-night talk — a deliberate break with the adult-contemporary mainstream that dominated German private radio at the turn of the millennium. After Baden-Württemberg, the coverage area was extended to Rheinland-Pfalz, and the bigFM brand became the southwest's defining commercial youth station, a position it has defended for more than two decades.

The digital expansion began in earnest in the late 2010s. From September 2018 a dedicated bigFM Berlin programme broadcast via DAB+ on channel 12D for Berlin and Brandenburg; in April 2022 a regional version for Hamburg followed on 12C. Notably, bigFM had already tested a DAB+ offshoot — bigFM Worldbeats — which was replaced by the regular programme in 2016, an early signal of the brand's digital ambitions. In 2022 the network's administrative headquarters moved from Stuttgart to Mannheim, consolidating the brand's management in its founding city. Since mid-July 2023 bigFM has been available via DAB+ in Niedersachsen and Bremen, and since September 2023 also in Nordrhein-Westfalen. On 8 August 2025 bigFM took over the FM frequencies of NRW1 in North Rhine-Westphalia, replacing that programme on its FM slots, with programme production for bigFM NRW handled by Audiotainment Südwest GmbH & Co. KG. Alongside terrestrial growth, bigFM built a family of thematic web streams from the mid-2010s — including the dance-oriented BigFM Dance Radio — and in 2023 launched bigGPT, an AI-generated web stream with fully synthetic voices and AI-produced content.

Programming

The Baden-Württemberg programme is a rhythmic-contemporary full-service youth station: music-led daytimes with news, service and comedy elements, and talk-led nights. The morning show is the day's centrepiece — a fast-paced ensemble programme with games, listener interaction and the brand's trademark cheek. Daytime hours rotate current hits with recurrents from the rhythmic genres, while the evening builds toward the late-night talk block. The Nightlounge and the Sunday Night Talk are the station's most distinctive formats: open-line, unscripted conversations in which young callers discuss relationships, family conflicts, identity and everyday crises — the formats that built bigFM's reputation and its controversies alike.

News and service elements run through the day in short youth-oriented bulletins, and the station maintains a strong event and promotion presence — concerts, parties and branded tours that extend the bigFM identity beyond the airwaves. The brand's tone is deliberately irreverent and close to its audience's language, a style that has won it loyalty among young listeners and repeated criticism from media watchdogs in equal measure. Presenters such as Rob Green became nationally known figures through the station's provocative stunts and social-media presence. The web-stream family supplements the main programme with genre channels, and the bigGPT experiment marked the brand as an early adopter of fully synthetic AI broadcasting in Germany.

Organization and Ownership

bigFM's Baden-Württemberg operation is anchored in Mannheim, which has served as the network's administrative headquarters since the 2022 move from Stuttgart. The station operates within the German private-radio licensing system under the supervision of the Baden-Württemberg state media authority (LFK), with the Rheinland-Pfalz and other regional versions licensed by their respective state authorities. Programme production for the newer North Rhine-Westphalia version is handled by Audiotainment Südwest GmbH & Co. KG, while the licences remain with the regional licence-holder companies. Detailed current ownership structures of the bigFM licence companies are not publicly confirmed in the sources consulted, and the brand's corporate arrangements have evolved with each stage of its multi-state expansion.

The brand has not been without controversy: in 2016 the Baden-Württemberg state institute for communication criticized the station's marketing practices, and in summer 2017 presenter Rob Green drew national attention with a WhatsApp message attempting to poach a rival station's newsreader live on air — an episode that became a much-discussed media story.

Digital Presence

bigFM's digital footprint is among the most developed in German private radio. The main portal bigfm.de carries the live stream of the Baden-Württemberg programme alongside the regional versions and the thematic web channels, with apps for iOS and Android, smart-speaker integration and podcast-style on-demand content. The station is highly active on social media — Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook — where short-form video, presenter content and music news extend the brand to audiences who rarely touch a radio set. The 2023 launch of the AI-generated bigGPT stream positioned bigFM as a pioneer of synthetic broadcasting: a programme presented entirely by synthetic voices with AI-generated content and a Top 40 of the most-streamed songs on the web. The BigFM Dance Radio web channel, fronted by presenters including Rob Green, serves the electronic-music audience. For a brand built on youth culture, the digital platforms are not an add-on but the second home of the programme — the place where the bigFM community lives between broadcasts.
