About Schrobenhausener Zeitung

Schrobenhausener Zeitung

The Schrobenhausener Zeitung is the local daily newspaper of Schrobenhausen, the historic town in the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen in Upper Bavaria, Germany, famous as the centre of Germany's asparagus and hop growing in the Hallertau region. Published as a local edition of the Ingolstadt-based Donaukurier, it appears Monday to Saturday with a local section produced by its own editorial office in Schrobenhausen and the overregional pages supplied by the Donaukurier's central editorial operation. The paper's roots reach back to 1848, when its predecessor appeared as the "Wochenblatt der königlich bayerischen Stadt Schrobenhausen", and it has been published as a daily newspaper since 1960. Since 1993 the publishing rights have belonged entirely to the Donaukurier publishing house.

Overview

The Schrobenhausener Zeitung is one of seven print editions of the Donaukurier, the regional daily of the Ingolstadt region, alongside the Aichacher Zeitung, the Eichstätter Kurier, the two main Donaukurier editions, the Hilpoltsteiner Kurier and the Pfaffenhofener Kurier. Its circulation area covers Schrobenhausen itself, the surrounding Hallertau countryside and parts of the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district. Schrobenhausen is a town of around eighteen thousand inhabitants with a well-preserved historic centre, known nationwide for the Schrobenhausener Spargel, the asparagus grown in the sandy soils around the town, and for its role as a market town for the hop-growing Hallertau, the world's largest contiguous hop-growing area.

The paper follows the classic local-edition model: the Schrobenhausen editorial office produces the local pages, while the Donaukurier's central newsroom in Ingolstadt supplies the Bavarian, national and international sections. The overregional part has come from the Donaukurier since 1951, making the partnership one of the longest-standing in the Bavarian press. The paper appears six days a week in print and is available as an e-paper and through the Donaukurier's digital platforms. Its readership is rooted in the town and the surrounding villages, where the paper functions as the chronicler of civic life in one of Upper Bavaria's most agriculturally distinctive regions.

History

The history of the Schrobenhausener Zeitung begins in the revolutionary year of 1848, when the "Wochenblatt der königlich bayerischen Stadt Schrobenhausen" appeared for the first time on 3 June 1848. In its early decades it served primarily as the town's official gazette, the Amtsblatt, publishing the announcements of the municipal administration. The paper developed through the second half of the nineteenth century alongside the town's growth as a market centre for the surrounding agricultural region.

The Nazi era brought the forced conformity of the German press: the long-standing publisher sold the printing works and the publishing rights, and in 1934 the "Schrobenhausener Wochenblatt" was renamed the "Schrobenhausener Anzeiger", which appeared as a daily from 1937 until its last issue on 25 April 1945, shortly before the end of the war. After the American military government's licensing requirement for press publications ended, the paper was refounded under its current name, with the first issue appearing on 1 August 1949. A milestone came in 1951, when the paper began taking its overregional section from the Ingolstädter Donaukurier, and in 1960 it became a full daily newspaper. In 1993 the publishing rights were sold entirely to the Donaukurier, completing the paper's integration into the Ingolstadt publishing house while preserving its title and its Schrobenhausen editorial office.

Coverage and Content

The local section of the Schrobenhausener Zeitung covers the town of Schrobenhausen and the surrounding communities of the southern Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district and the Hallertau. Municipal politics is a core beat, with reporting on the town council, the district council, and planning issues in a region balancing agricultural tradition with industrial development. The paper follows the asparagus and hop harvests that define the local economy, reporting on the growers, the seasonal workers and the markets, and it covers the food processing and manufacturing companies of the area.

Club and association life receives extensive coverage, from the volunteer fire brigades and sports clubs to the traditional costume and music societies of the Hallertau villages. The paper previews and reviews local festivals, including the town's cultural events and the harvest celebrations of the region. Sports reporting follows the local football clubs and other regional sports. The Donaukurier's central editorial office supplies the overregional sections: Bavarian state politics, national news from Berlin, international reporting, business, culture and sports. Service elements such as event calendars, obituaries, family announcements and consumer advice complete the daily offering.

Organization and Ownership

The Schrobenhausener Zeitung is published by the Donaukurier publishing house in Ingolstadt. The Donaukurier was founded in 1945 and has grown into the leading regional daily of the Ingolstadt region, publishing seven local editions with distinct local sections. Since 1 January 2017 the Donaukurier has belonged to the Passauer Neue Presse (PNP) publishing group, one of Bavaria's major regional media houses. The paper maintains its own local editorial office in Schrobenhausen, where local editors produce the town's pages and serve as the point of contact for readers, clubs and advertisers.

Production has been centralised in recent years: at the end of 2022 the Donaukurier's own printing plant in Ingolstadt was closed, and the paper is now printed at the Mittelbayerische Zeitung's printing works in Regensburg, which was likewise taken over by the PNP group. Distribution, subscription management and advertising sales are handled through the group's shared services. The editorial responsibility for the overregional content lies with the Donaukurier's central editorial office in Ingolstadt, while the Schrobenhausen team is responsible for the local pages.

Readership and Market Position

The Schrobenhausener Zeitung holds a strong position as the leading daily of the Schrobenhausen area, where it faces little direct competition from other daily newspapers. Its readership is rooted in the town and the surrounding Hallertau villages, a stable, community-oriented population with strong local identity tied to the asparagus and hop growing traditions. The paper's long history, reaching back to 1848, gives it deep credibility as the chronicler of the town's civic life, and its role in covering the agricultural economy makes it relevant far beyond the town limits.

Competition comes mainly from free weekly advertising papers distributed to all households and from digital news sources. Like all German regional dailies, the paper has seen print circulation decline over the past two decades, a trend the publishing group addresses through the e-paper and the Donaukurier's digital platforms. The integration into the PNP group since 2017 has secured the economic basis for continued daily local journalism in Schrobenhausen, combining the efficiency of centralised production with the distinct local identity that readers value.

Digital Presence

The Schrobenhausener Zeitung is integrated into the Donaukurier's digital platforms. Its content appears on donaukurier.de within the paper's regional section structure, and readers can access the complete printed edition as an e-paper. The Donaukurier's smartphone app, DK mobil, covers all seven of the paper's editions, including the Schrobenhausener Zeitung, offering personalised news, offline reading and push notifications for breaking stories. The app allows readers to configure their interests by region and topic, making the Schrobenhausen local news easily accessible on mobile devices.

The digital offering follows a subscription model, with the e-paper available as part of print subscriptions or as a standalone digital subscription. The paper can also be followed through the Donaukurier's social media channels and newsletters. The integration into the group's digital infrastructure gives the Schrobenhausen edition modern online tools while preserving its distinct local editorial identity for the town and the Hallertau region.
