About Schwäbische Post
Schwäbische Post
The Schwäbische Post is a regional daily newspaper serving Aalen and the Ostalbkreis district in eastern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Published by the family-run media house SDZ Druck und Medien GmbH & Co. KG in Aalen, it appears Monday to Saturday with local sections produced by its own editorial teams and the overregional pages supplied by the Südwest Presse's central newsroom in Ulm. With a sold circulation of around 25,000 copies, it is the leading daily of the Ostalbkreis, covering the cities of Aalen and Ellwangen and the surrounding region. The paper's history reaches back to 1948, with roots in Aalen's newspaper tradition extending to 1837.
Overview
The Schwäbische Post is the flagship daily of the SDZ Druck und Medien publishing house, a family-owned media company led by the Theiss family and based at Bahnhofstraße 65 in Aalen. The company and its subsidiaries employ around 300 people, including some 30 editors, and train media designers, digital and print media merchants, IT specialists and editorial trainees. The paper appears six days a week in print and is available as an e-paper, with a significant share of its circulation now sold in digital form. Its circulation area covers the Ostalbkreis, the easternmost district of Baden-Württemberg, centred on the cities of Aalen and Ellwangen.
Aalen is a city of around seventy thousand inhabitants with a strong industrial profile, dominated by metal processing, mechanical engineering, optics, paper and IT, and home to major employers in the automotive supply and precision engineering sectors. The Schwäbische Post serves this economically dynamic region with a full-service daily: local news from its own newsrooms, the Südwest Presse mantle for state, national and international coverage, and comprehensive business, culture and sports sections. The paper's editions include the Aalener Zeitung, the Ellwanger Zeitung and the Zeitung für den Ostalbkreis, reflecting the district's sub-regions.
History
The newspaper tradition of Aalen began on 29 January 1837, when two Schwäbisch Gmünd booksellers, Johannes Raach and Philip Jakob Andreas Buck, founded the town's first newspaper, the Bote von Aalen. In 1853 Ludwig Gottlob Stierlin was awarded the publication rights for the paper, then the official gazette of the Aalen district, and in 1873 it was renamed the Kocherzeitung. Under the Nazi regime's forced conformity of the press, the National Socialist press became the majority shareholder in 1933 and renamed the paper the Kocher- und Nationalzeitung; the final issue appeared on 17 May 1945.
The Schwäbische Post itself was founded in the post-war period: on 25 February 1948, John Binkowski and Konrad Theiss applied to the American military government for a licence for the newly established Süddeutsche Zeitung publishing company to print the "Schwäbische Post – Zeitung für den Kreis Aalen". To emphasise the continuity of newspaper service in Aalen since 1837, the publishing rights of the former Kocherzeitung were transferred to the Schwäbische Post a few years later. The Theiss family has led the publishing house ever since, building SDZ Druck und Medien into a diversified regional media company. The paper navigated the transformation of the German regional press from hot metal to digital, maintaining its position as the Ostalbkreis's leading daily through continuous investment in its newsrooms and its printing and digital infrastructure.
Coverage and Content
The Schwäbische Post's local sections cover Aalen, Ellwangen and the municipalities of the Ostalbkreis. Economic reporting is a defining strength, reflecting the district's industrial character: the paper follows the metal processing and mechanical engineering companies, the automotive suppliers, the paper industry and the IT sector, reporting on business developments, labour market trends and the structural issues of the region's Mittelstand economy. Municipal politics is a core beat, with coverage of the Aalen and Ellwangen town councils, the Ostalbkreis district council, and the planning issues of a growing economic region.
Cultural reporting draws on the region's heritage, from the Roman history of Aalen, once the site of the largest Roman cavalry fort north of the Alps, to the baroque old town of Ellwangen and the district's museums and festivals. The paper's daily sections include politics, the Südwestumschau regional review, world news, local news, a youth page, Ostalb culture, entertainment and comprehensive sports coverage. Club and association life, local sports with the region's football clubs, and school topics receive regular attention. The Südwest Presse mantle provides Baden-Württemberg state politics, national and international news, completing the full daily offering.
Organization and Ownership
The Schwäbische Post is published by SDZ Druck und Medien GmbH & Co. KG, the family-owned media house led by the Theiss family in Aalen. The company's management is listed as Constanze van Overdam and Bernd Sievers as managing directors, and the paper's editor-in-chief is Constantin Blaß. The company employs around 300 people across its publishing, printing, distribution and digital operations, with training programmes for the next generation of media professionals.
The publishing house operates its own printing facilities in Aalen, giving it control over the production of the newspaper and its commercial printing business. The overregional content partnership with the Südwest Presse in Ulm provides the paper with a full national and international news operation through the SWP mantle newsroom, one of the largest regional editorial cooperations in Germany. Distribution, subscription management and advertising sales are handled by the company's own organisations, with the Aalen headquarters serving as the point of contact for readers and advertisers across the Ostalbkreis.
Readership and Market Position
The Schwäbische Post is the leading daily newspaper of the Ostalbkreis, with a sold circulation of around 25,000 copies, of which more than 9,000 are sold as e-paper, reflecting the advanced digitalisation of its readership. Its readership is rooted in the district's prosperous, industrially shaped population: skilled workers, engineers and managers from the metal and engineering industries, public sector employees, and the service workers of the regional centres. Subscriber loyalty in the Ostalbkreis is traditionally high, and the paper benefits from the economic strength of its circulation area.
The paper competes with the Aalener Nachrichten, the local edition of the Schwäbische Zeitung from Ravensburg, as well as with free weekly papers and digital news sources. Its market position rests on the depth of its local journalism: the paper's own newsrooms cover the Ostalbkreis's civic and economic life with a thoroughness that reflects the family publisher's long-term commitment to the region. The significant e-paper share demonstrates the successful digital transformation of the readership, positioning the paper for the continued shift from print to digital.
Digital Presence
The Schwäbische Post's digital home is schwaebische-post.de, the paper's own online portal presenting regional news, leisure offerings and online advertising services. Readers can access the complete printed edition as an e-paper, available online and as a PDF download, with the digital edition forming a growing share of the paper's circulation. The paper reaches readers through social media channels and newsletters, and its online newsroom provides continuously updated regional news.
The digital offering follows a subscription model, with the e-paper available as part of print subscriptions or as a standalone digital subscription. The publishing house has invested in its digital infrastructure as part of its overall media strategy, developing its portal and digital products alongside the print newspaper. The Schwäbische Post's digital presence extends its reach beyond the Ostalbkreis to former residents and interested readers elsewhere, while its core remains the daily journalism for Aalen, Ellwangen and the surrounding region.
