About Lauenburgische Landeszeitung

Lauenburgische Landeszeitung

The Lauenburgische Landeszeitung is a regional daily newspaper published in Ratzeburg, Schleswig-Holstein, serving the town of Lauenburg and the surrounding district of Herzogtum Lauenburg. It appears Monday to Saturday and functions today as the Lauenburg regional edition of the Bergedorfer Zeitung, published by FUNKE Medien Hamburg GmbH. With roots reaching back to 1870, when a first trial issue was printed in the town of Lauenburg itself, the paper is among the longest-established local titles in the Hamburg metropolitan region's southern hinterland. Its pages combine local reporting from Lauenburg, Schwarzenbek and Geesthacht with regional coverage of Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, alongside the standard national politics, business, culture and sports sections of a modern German regional daily.

Overview

The Lauenburgische Landeszeitung is produced for readers in the eastern part of the Hamburg metropolitan region, centered on the historic town of Lauenburg on the Elbe and the district that bears the name of the former Duchy of Lauenburg. The editorial focus is resolutely local: municipal politics, district administration, local business, clubs and associations, schools, and the everyday life of the smaller towns and villages of the district. Beyond Lauenburg itself, the paper maintains editorial presence in Schwarzenbek and Geesthacht, two of the district's other significant towns, and its local pages also extend to Bergedorf and the Vier- und Marschlande area on the Hamburg side, reflecting the paper's integration with the Bergedorfer Zeitung's broader circulation area.

The newspaper appears in print from Monday to Saturday, the standard rhythm for German regional dailies, and is sold by subscription as well as through the digital channels that now carry a growing share of readership. The printed edition carries the familiar mix of sections: local news, regional pages for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, politics, business, culture, and sports including local sports coverage. A daily service package with the television program and the weather forecast rounds out the print product, and the classified and display advertising section connects local businesses with readers in the district. The digital edition mirrors the print edition's content and layout, available online and as a downloadable PDF through the iKiosk e-paper platform, so that readers who have moved away from the district or who prefer reading on tablets and computers can follow their home region's news.

Circulation figures for the title are reported together with the Bergedorfer Zeitung, into whose publishing structure the Lauenburgische Landeszeitung is integrated. Like nearly all German local newspapers, the title has faced the long-term structural decline of print circulation that has reshaped the industry over the past two decades, and the publisher has responded with digital subscriptions, combined print-and-online offers, and the e-paper edition. The paper remains, however, a daily presence in its district: a subscription product with a loyal core readership that values close-to-home reporting.

History

The history of the Lauenburgische Landeszeitung begins in the town of Lauenburg on the Elbe in 1870. On 17 September of that year, the printer and publisher Rudolph Dominé issued the first trial number of the Allgemeine Lauenburgische Landeszeitung. Regular publication began on 1 October 1870, initially three times a week, in a small folio format. The paper grew with its readership: the format was enlarged at the end of 1875, and from 1 December 1877 the paper appeared daily. A further expansion of the subscriber base followed in 1891, when the quarterly subscription price was cut from three marks to two, and from 1 October 1899 the paper carried the subtitle General-Anzeiger für den Kreis Herzogthum Lauenburg, advertising its claim to serve the entire district of the Duchy of Lauenburg.

A decisive change of ownership came on 1 June 1885, when the printing house and the newspaper passed to the Lübeck firm of Gebrüder Borchers, the same publishing family whose Lübeckische Anzeigen were among the great Hanseatic newspapers of the nineteenth century. Under the Borchers family's ownership the paper remained anchored in Lauenburg for more than a century. Like all German newspapers it was subject to the upheavals of the twentieth century, including the wartime and postwar periods, and in the postwar era it found its place in the media landscape of the Hamburg region, where it eventually entered into close cooperation with the Bergedorfer Zeitung, Hamburg's long-established local daily for the Bergedorf district.

The modern corporate history of the paper is tied to that of the Bergedorfer Zeitung. The Axel Springer publishing group acquired a 20 percent stake in the Bergedorfer Zeitung in 1971 and took it over completely three years later, in 1974. Springer remained the owner for nearly four decades. At the end of 2013, Axel Springer sold the Bergedorfer Zeitung together with the Lauenburgische Landeszeitung to the Funke Mediengruppe of Essen, with the sale taking effect on 31 December 2013. Since then the paper has been published by FUNKE Medien Hamburg, the group's Hamburg regional publishing arm. In 2016 the prepress operations were outsourced to FUNKE PrePress in Erfurt as part of a cost-saving program, a step that affected the Bergedorf printing operations and reflected the broader industry trend toward centralizing production while keeping editorial teams local.

Coverage and Content

The editorial identity of the Lauenburgische Landeszeitung is defined by its local pages. For Lauenburg, Schwarzenbek and Geesthacht, as well as Bergedorf, the Vier- und Marschlande, Glinde and Reinbek, the paper produces dedicated local sections that report on the matters closest to readers' lives: town council and district council decisions, planning and construction projects, local elections, school and kindergarten issues, the work of volunteer fire brigades and local associations, church life, and the cultural calendar of the district's towns. Court reporting from the local courts, police reports, and coverage of traffic and infrastructure projects complete the local news offering. For a district like Herzogtum Lauenburg, situated between Hamburg and Lübeck and shaped by commuter flows into both cities, the paper's local reporting also covers regional transport, housing development, and the tension between rural character and metropolitan growth.

The local sports pages follow the district's clubs, from football and handball leagues through rowing on the Elbe and the lakes of the Lauenburg lake district to equestrian sports and the many traditional shooting and sports clubs. Cultural coverage takes in the theater, concerts and exhibitions of the region, the historic old town of Lauenburg with its Elbe shipping museum tradition, and events in Ratzeburg, Mölln and the surrounding towns.

Beyond the local sections, the paper carries the full apparatus of a regional daily: pages for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein state politics, national and international politics, business and the economy, culture, and sports. The opinion pages offer editorials and commentary, and readers' letters give the district's citizens a forum. Service journalism is a fixed component: the daily television listings, the weather forecast, and practical consumer information. The advertising section, both in print and online, serves the district's retail, crafts, real estate and automotive businesses.

Organization and Ownership

The Lauenburgische Landeszeitung is published by FUNKE Medien Hamburg GmbH, part of the Funke Mediengruppe headquartered in Essen, one of Germany's large regional newspaper groups. Funke acquired the title at the end of 2013 from Axel Springer, together with the Bergedorfer Zeitung, and integrated both into its Hamburg operations. Within this structure the Lauenburgische Landeszeitung operates as the Lauenburg regional edition of the Bergedorfer Zeitung, sharing the supra-regional content production while maintaining its own local editorial identity for the Herzogtum Lauenburg district.

Editorial offices are maintained in Lauenburg itself, with additional editorial presence in Schwarzenbek and Geesthacht, ensuring that reporters are on the ground in the district's main towns. The supra-regional pages are produced within the Funke group's shared editorial structures, a common arrangement in the German regional press that allows small local titles to offer full national and international coverage while concentrating their own resources on local reporting. Production steps such as prepress were centralized to FUNKE PrePress in Erfurt in 2016. Details of the current editor-in-chief and the exact staffing of the local editorial teams are not publicly confirmed in the sources consulted; the paper's imprint and the publisher's corporate pages are the authoritative references for current personnel.

Digital Presence

The Lauenburgische Landeszeitung maintains a digital presence through its website at lauenburgische-landeszeitung.de, which serves as the online home of the title within the Funke Medien Hamburg digital portfolio. The site carries current local and regional news, with subscription and registration models that reflect the publisher's digital strategy: online-only subscriptions and combined print-plus-online packages are offered alongside the traditional print subscription.

The complete newspaper is available as an e-paper through the iKiosk platform, where each day's edition can be read online or downloaded as a PDF. The digital edition is identical in content and layout to the printed paper, including the local sections, the service pages and the advertising section, making it a full substitute for readers who prefer digital reading or who live outside the delivery area. The publisher also markets the title through the standard app and newsletter channels common to the Funke group's regional papers. On social media the paper reaches readers through the shared channels of the Bergedorfer Zeitung and Funke Medien Hamburg presence, extending the local reporting to audiences who encounter the news primarily on their phones.
