About Leonberger Kreiszeitung

Leonberger Kreiszeitung

The Leonberger Kreiszeitung is a regional daily newspaper published in Leonberg, Baden-Württemberg, on the western edge of the Stuttgart metropolitan region. Founded on 23 May 1949, it holds a distinctive place in German press history as the first newspaper in southern Germany that was able to appear without a license from the American military authorities in the early postwar period. Today it is published by the Stuttgarter Zeitung Verlagsgesellschaft mbH and appears as the Leonberg local edition of the Stuttgarter Zeitung, with its own local editorial office in Leonberg producing the local pages for the city and the old Leonberg district. The paper is the official gazette of the city of Leonberg and the most-read daily newspaper in its circulation area, with a sold circulation of 12,720 copies including a partial edition of the Stuttgarter Zeitung.

Overview

The Leonberger Kreiszeitung serves Leonberg, a large district town of more than 45,000 inhabitants directly west of Stuttgart, together with the surrounding communities of the old Leonberg district: towns and villages such as Renningen, Rutesheim, Weil der Stadt, Gerlingen and Ditzingen that form the commuter belt between Stuttgart and the northern Black Forest foothills. The paper's readers live in one of the economically strongest regions of Germany, shaped by the automotive and engineering industries, by the research and development corridors along the A8 and A81 motorways, and by the rapid suburban growth of the Stuttgart region.

The newspaper appears Monday to Saturday in the Rhenish format. Its sold circulation, reported jointly with a partial edition of the Stuttgarter Zeitung distributed in the Leonberg area, stands at 12,720 copies, a decline of 24.8 percent since 1998 that reflects the broader pressures on the regional press. The subscription share is very high at 92.8 percent, indicating a loyal core readership that receives the paper at home each morning. The editorial product combines the locally produced Leonberg pages with the full supra-regional offering of the Stuttgarter Zeitung: state, national and international politics, business, culture and sports from one of Germany's respected regional dailies with national ambitions.

History

The founding of the Leonberger Kreiszeitung on 23 May 1949 came at a symbolic moment in German history: the very day the Basic Law was promulgated and the Federal Republic of Germany founded. In the American occupation zone, newspapers had until then required a license from the military government, a system that had shaped the postwar press since 1945. The Leonberger Kreiszeitung was the first newspaper in southern Germany to appear without such a license, a milestone that the German newspaper publishers' association later commemorated and that gives the paper a special status in the history of press freedom in the young Federal Republic.

For its first quarter-century the paper operated as an independent local daily, building its position as Leonberg's newspaper and the official gazette of the city. From 1 July 1974 it drew its supra-regional section, the mantle pages, from the Stuttgarter Nachrichten, Stuttgart's second daily, while continuing to produce its local pages independently in Leonberg. This arrangement lasted for three decades and defined the paper's modern identity as a local paper with a metropolitan mantle.

The decisive structural change came at the turn of 2004 to 2005. Until December 2004 the Leonberger Kreiszeitung remained an independent newspaper, but during 2004 the publishing house of the Stuttgarter Zeitung acquired the company's shares, and in January 2005 the paper became a head paper, a Kopfblatt, of the Stuttgarter Zeitung. The move was part of a broader expansion of the Stuttgarter Zeitung's regional reporting, which was henceforth presented in a separate regional book rather than on a single double page as before. In October 2005 the paper switched its mantle from the Stuttgarter Nachrichten to the Stuttgarter Zeitung, and in January 2006 the local section was renamed to present itself as the Stuttgarter Zeitung's Leonberg edition. The local editorial office in Leonberg was retained, continuing to produce the Leonberg pages, while publishing, marketing and supra-regional content were integrated into the Stuttgart structures.

Coverage and Content

The Leonberg local pages are the core of the paper's identity. They report on the Leonberg town council and the councils of the surrounding municipalities, on the district of Böblingen insofar as it affects the Leonberg area, and on the planning decisions that shape a fast-growing suburban region: housing developments, transport projects including the chronically congested motorway junctions around the Leonberger Dreieck, school construction, and the expansion of commercial areas. Local business reporting covers the Mittelstand companies of the region, the automotive suppliers, engineering firms and IT businesses that characterize the Stuttgart economic area, as well as retail and crafts in Leonberg's old town.

The paper follows the cultural life of the city, from the theater and concert programs to the festivals and markets, and reports on the clubs and associations, churches, schools and volunteer organizations that structure community life. Local sports coverage follows the football, handball and other clubs of the area through their leagues. As the official gazette of the city of Leonberg, the paper also carries municipal announcements and public notices. Police and court reporting, traffic information, and extensive service pages with event calendars, television listings and readers' letters complete the local offering.

Beyond the local book, readers receive the complete Stuttgarter Zeitung: reporting from the state capital and the state politics of Baden-Württemberg, national and international news, business pages, culture, and sports, produced by one of Germany's largest regional editorial teams. The combination gives the Leonberg reader a local paper and a full-service regional daily in a single product.

Organization and Ownership

The Leonberger Kreiszeitung is published by the Stuttgarter Zeitung Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, part of the Stuttgart newspaper group. The Stuttgarter Zeitung publishing company is controlled through the Südwestdeutsche Medienholding structures, and the Leonberg title operates within this group as the local edition for Leonberg and surroundings. The editorial office in Leonberg houses the local reporting team responsible for the Leonberg pages, while the supra-regional content, production, printing and central marketing are handled within the Stuttgart organization.

The paper's status as the official gazette of the city of Leonberg gives it a formal role in municipal communication alongside its journalistic function. Details of the current local editorial leadership are not publicly confirmed in the sources consulted; the paper's imprint and the Stuttgarter Zeitung group's corporate pages are the authoritative references. The integration into the Stuttgart group since 2005 has secured the paper's economic base while preserving its local masthead and its Leonberg newsroom.

Digital Presence

The Leonberger Kreiszeitung is present online at leonberger-kreiszeitung.de, integrated into the digital portfolio of the Stuttgarter Zeitung group. The website carries current local news from Leonberg and the surrounding communities alongside the group's wider regional and national coverage, with the subscription models standard for the German regional press: digital subscriptions, combined print-and-online packages, and the traditional print subscription.

The e-paper edition reproduces the printed newspaper digitally, including the Leonberg local book, for reading on computers and tablets. The Stuttgarter Zeitung group's news apps extend the paper's content to mobile readers, and the title reaches audiences through the social media channels of the Stuttgart group, where local stories from Leonberg appear alongside regional news. The digital offering reflects the group's strategy of defending the subscription business while building digital reach in the Stuttgart region.
