About Main-Spitze
Main-Spitze
The Main-Spitze is a local daily newspaper published in Rüsselsheim am Main, Hesse, serving the city in the Groß-Gerau district between Frankfurt, Mainz and Darmstadt. First published on 3 October 1877 as the Anzeiger für Rüsselsheim und Umgebung, it is one of the oldest newspapers in the Rhine-Main region, with nearly a century and a half of publishing history behind it. It appears Monday to Saturday, published by the VRM GmbH & Co. KG, the Mainz-based media group, with a sold circulation of around 8,200 copies. Since 2022 the Main-Spitze and its historic local rival, the Rüsselsheimer Echo, have both belonged to VRM and are produced by the same editorial team, identical in content except for their mastheads. In a city shaped by the Opel automobile works and its position in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region, the Main-Spitze is the daily chronicle of local public life and the paper of record for the city's civic debates.
Overview
The Main-Spitze serves Rüsselsheim am Main, a city of around 65,000 inhabitants on the Main river, together with the surrounding communities of the northern Groß-Gerau district. The paper appears Monday to Saturday in the Rhenish format, with a sold circulation reported at 8,184 copies, a decline of 35 percent since 1998 that reflects the pressures on small local dailies in metropolitan regions, where free papers, commuter media and digital platforms compete fiercely for attention. The editorial product combines locally produced pages from the Rüsselsheim editorial office with the supra-regional section of the VRM group, produced in Mainz, which carries Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate state politics, national and international news, business, culture and sports.
The paper's market position is distinctive: Rüsselsheim long sustained two daily newspapers, the Main-Spitze and the Rüsselsheimer Echo, both head papers owned by outside publishing groups and each maintaining only a small local editorial office in the city. Since 2022 both titles have belonged to VRM, are staffed by the same editorial team, and are identical except for their names, a consolidation that preserved both mastheads while ending the editorial competition between them. The paper is predominantly a subscription newspaper and is available as an e-paper.
History
The paper was founded on 3 October 1877 under the name Anzeiger für Rüsselsheim und Umgebung by the printer Heinrich Hohmann, who initially performed all tasks from editor to printer himself. In 1908 the Pfeifer family acquired the Main-Spitze and shaped it over the following decades, guiding it through the early twentieth century. During the Second World War the paper was forced to cease publication in 1943, and after the war it could initially appear only as an official gazette. In 1949 the Pfeifer publishing family received a license to publish the newspaper, and step by step the Main-Spitze re-established itself as a reporting daily newspaper.
In 1972 the Main-Spitze was taken over by the Mainzer Verlagsanstalt, the Mainz publishing house that became the Verlagsgruppe Rhein Main in 1992 and the VRM GmbH & Co. KG in May 2017. Under the Mainz ownership the paper was integrated into the Rhein Main Presse brand network, which at its peak produced eighteen daily editions across Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, reaching up to 510,000 readers from Idstein to Worms and from Kirn to Rüsselsheim. The brand network was dissolved in 2018, and the titles have since been managed under the VRM umbrella brand.
The paper's local rival, the Rüsselsheimer Echo, followed a parallel path: long part of the Medienhaus Südhessen group, it was sold to the Mediengruppe Frankfurter Societät in 2015. In 2022 the Echo too came under VRM ownership, uniting Rüsselsheim's two dailies under one roof. Since then both papers have been produced by the same editorial team and are identical in content apart from their mastheads, a solution that preserved reader loyalties to both historic titles while rationalizing the economics of local journalism in the city.
Coverage and Content
The Rüsselsheim local pages report on the city council and the Groß-Gerau district politics as they affect the city, on planning and infrastructure decisions, and on the issues of an industrial city in the Rhine-Main region: the development of the Opel factory site and the automotive industry's transformation, housing construction in one of Germany's tightest housing markets, transport projects including the S-Bahn connections to Frankfurt, Mainz and Wiesbaden, school and kindergarten capacity, and the revitalization of the city center and the Main riverfront.
The paper follows the fortunes of Opel and its suppliers, the city's largest employer and the defining institution of Rüsselsheim's modern history, alongside the Mittelstand companies, craftspeople and retailers of the local economy. It reports on the clubs and associations, churches, schools and volunteer organizations, on the cultural calendar including the theater, concerts and festivals, and on the local sports clubs through their leagues. Police and court reporting, municipal announcements, event listings, and readers' letters complete the local offering. The weekly advertising papers Rüsselsheimer Wochenblatt and SÜWO complement the dailies in the city's media landscape, alongside the community radio station Radio Rüsselsheim.
The supra-regional section from the VRM group provides coverage of Hesse state politics, national and international news, business and the economy, culture, and sports. Special pages mark local and state elections, the Christmas season, school enrollment and regional economic themes, and the advertising section connects the city's retailers, car dealers, craftspeople and service providers with readers across the northern Groß-Gerau district.
Organization and Ownership
The Main-Spitze is published by the VRM GmbH & Co. KG, the Mainz-based media group headquartered in Mainz-Marienborn. The group, formerly the Mainzer Verlagsanstalt and the Verlagsgruppe Rhein Main, is one of the significant regional media houses of southwestern Germany, publishing the Allgemeine Zeitung of Mainz, the Wiesbadener Kurier and a family of local editions across the Rhine-Main region and Rhenish Hesse. The managing director is Joachim Liebler, and the editor-in-chief of the Main-Spitze is Frank Kaminski.
The Rüsselsheim editorial office produces the paper's local pages, shared since 2022 with the Rüsselsheimer Echo, while the supra-regional pages are produced by the group's central editorial organization in Mainz. The paper's local advertising market is served through the group's regional sales structures, connecting Rüsselsheim's businesses with the paper's readership. The consolidation of the two Rüsselsheim dailies under VRM reflects the broader economics of the German local press, in which shared editorial production sustains local mastheads that could no longer support independent newsrooms.
Digital Presence
The digital home of the Main-Spitze is main-spitze.de, integrated into the VRM group's digital portfolio, which carries current local news from Rüsselsheim alongside the group's wider regional coverage. Readers can take out print, digital and combined subscriptions through the site, and the e-paper edition reproduces each day's printed newspaper digitally for reading on computers, tablets and smartphones.
The VRM group's news apps extend the paper's content to mobile readers, and the title reaches audiences through social media channels where local stories from Rüsselsheim are shared, from council decisions to Opel news and sports results. Newsletters and push alerts keep subscribers informed of breaking local developments. The digital strategy follows the pattern of the German regional press: defending the subscription business while building digital reach, with the Rüsselsheim section's online presence serving readers in the city and the commuters who follow their home region's news from Frankfurt, Mainz and Wiesbaden.
