About Süderländer Tageblatt

Süderländer Tageblatt

The Süderländer Tageblatt is a daily regional newspaper published in Plettenberg, in the Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia. Known locally by its abbreviation ST, it is a traditional Heimatzeitung — a newspaper deeply rooted in its home region — serving the city of Plettenberg, the municipality of Herscheid, and parts of the surrounding area. The paper appears Monday through Saturday and is the only local daily newspaper in Plettenberg. It is published by the Märkischer Zeitungsverlag, part of the media group of publisher Dirk Ippen, which also produces the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten. The newspaper's offices and editorial department are located at An der Lohmühle 7–9 in Plettenberg. Its digital home is come-on.de, the shared online platform of the Märkischer Zeitungsverlag's titles. With roots stretching back to 1899, the Süderländer Tageblatt is one of the Sauerland's most established local newspapers.

Overview

The Süderländer Tageblatt serves the Vier-Täler-Stadt Plettenberg (the "four-valleys town"), a city of around 25,000 inhabitants in the Märkischer Kreis, along with Herscheid and adjacent communities in the districts of Olpe and beyond. Its circulation area covers a classic Sauerland landscape of forested hills, small industrial towns, and villages shaped by metalworking and manufacturing traditions.

The paper appears Monday through Saturday in the standard regional daily format. Its editorial profile is that of a Heimatzeitung: intensive coverage of local politics, clubs and associations, schools, churches, and community events, combined with the supraregional news pages supplied by the publishing group's network. The traditional house color of the paper is red, used wherever possible in its design.

The Süderländer Tageblatt's readership consists of the established households of Plettenberg and Herscheid, with the loyal, older demographic typical of German regional dailies. In Plettenberg, the ST holds a monopoly position as the sole local daily newspaper, a status it secured after decades of competition with the Westfälische Rundschau, whose local editorial offices were closed in 2013 and whose Plettenberg edition was discontinued entirely in 2014.

History

The Süderländer Tageblatt traces its origins to 1899, when the publishing company was entered in the commercial register at Iserlohn (HRA 2296) as Süderländer Tageblatt, Plettenberger Zeitung O. Hundt GmbH & Co. KG. The Hundt family name remained associated with the paper for over a century: the Otto Hundt printing and publishing house in Plettenberg produced the newspaper through generations, and the company's address at An der Lohmühle became a local institution.

The paper's history mirrors that of the Sauerland press through the twentieth century: the upheavals of two world wars, the Nazi era's suppression of press freedom, and the post-war rebuilding under Allied licensing. Through all of this, the ST maintained its identity as Plettenberg's hometown newspaper, publishing sister titles including the Plettenberger Zeitung and the Herscheider Nachrichten.

For decades, the ST competed as the market leader against the Westfälische Rundschau, which belonged to the WAZ media group (now Funke Mediengruppe). The rivalry defined the local press market until the Rundschau's retreat: in 2013, the competitor closed all its local editorial offices, and the ST newsroom in Plettenberg even supplied the Rundschau with local content under contract for a transitional period. When the Rundschau's edition was discontinued entirely on 1 January 2014, the ST became Plettenberg's only local daily.

A landmark change came at the beginning of 2017, when the previously independent Plettenberg publishing house joined the Märkischer Zeitungsverlag, the Lüdenscheid-based publisher of the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten and part of Dirk Ippen's media group. Since 1996, the Plettenberg newsroom had already been supplying reporting from Herscheid for the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten and a "Vier-Täler-Stadt Plettenberg" page for the Süderländer Volksfreund in Werdohl; the 2017 integration formalized a long-standing cooperation.

Coverage and Content

The local section is the heart of the Süderländer Tageblatt, reporting on Plettenberg, Herscheid, and the surrounding communities. Municipal coverage includes the Plettenberg city council, the Herscheid municipal council, planning and construction, local infrastructure in the challenging Sauerland topography, schools, and the district administration of the Märkischer Kreis.

Economic reporting reflects the region's industrial character: metalworking, foundries, and manufacturing are central to the local economy, and the paper covers employers, apprenticeships, and labor market issues. Club and association life — the Vereine that structure social life in Sauerland towns — receives extensive attention, from sports clubs and shooting associations to choirs, volunteer fire brigades, and carnival societies.

Beyond the local pages, the paper carries the supraregional "Mantel" content of its publishing network. The Lüdenscheider Nachrichten titles are head papers (Kopfblätter) of the Westfälischer Anzeiger published in Hamm, from which the entire national and international section is taken. Special interest pages, supplements, and seasonal editions round out the offering.

Organization and Ownership

The Süderländer Tageblatt is published by the Märkischer Zeitungsverlag, based in Lüdenscheid, which has owned the Plettenberg publishing house since the beginning of 2017. The Märkischer Zeitungsverlag belongs to the media group of publisher Dirk Ippen, whose portfolio includes the Münchner Merkur, the Munich tabloid tz, the Hessische/Niedersächsische Allgemeine in Kassel, the Offenbach-Post, and other regional titles.

Within the Märkischer Zeitungsverlag, the Süderländer Tageblatt is published alongside the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten, the Meinerzhagener Zeitung, the Altenaer Kreisblatt, the Allgemeine Anzeiger (Halver), and the Süderländer Volksfreund (Werdohl), each with its own local section. The combined print circulation of these titles is around 23,860 copies. The editor-in-chief for the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten and its sister titles is Christian Gerstenberger, according to published sources.

The newspaper's operations remain anchored in Plettenberg: reader service, advertising acceptance, a private postal service, and book and commercial printing are housed at An der Lohmühle 7, with the editorial department in the adjacent building at An der Lohmühle 9. The ST-Versand distribution operation also delivers third-party national newspapers such as the Süddeutsche Zeitung in the area, as well as the Wednesday advertising paper "Der Bote".

Readership and Market Position

In Plettenberg, the Süderländer Tageblatt enjoys a monopoly as the only local daily newspaper, a position it has held since the Westfälische Rundschau's withdrawal in 2014. In Herscheid and parts of the neighboring districts, it appears alongside partner papers of the publishing group. This strong local position gives it deep penetration among municipal decision-makers, local businesses, and civic associations.

The paper's advertising base consists of local retailers, tradespeople, automotive dealers, and industrial employers, supplemented by regional inserts coordinated at the group level. Its role as a civic bulletin board — announcements, obituaries, event listings — underpins its continued relevance. Like all German regional dailies, it faces long-term circulation pressure from demographic change, addressed through the come-on.de digital platform and e-paper offerings.

The paper's identity as a Heimatzeitung is visible in its close ties to local institutions. The ST reports on the Plettenberg and Herscheid volunteer fire brigades, the numerous sports and shooting clubs, the choirs and music societies, and the carnival associations that animate the Sauerland's social calendar. Its pages document the milestones of community life — confirmations, anniversaries, club jubilees — that larger media overlook. This chronicler role, maintained across more than a century, is the foundation of the loyalty the paper commands in its circulation area.

Digital Presence

The Süderländer Tageblatt's digital home is come-on.de, the shared online portal of the Märkischer Zeitungsverlag's newspapers. The site carries local news from Plettenberg, Herscheid, Lüdenscheid, and the other titles' areas, operating under a digital subscription model with e-paper replica editions. The platform also hosts the group's advertising portals and service content.

The paper maintains a social media presence, including a Facebook page under the Süderländer Tageblatt name, where local stories are shared and discussed. Digital subscriptions are offered in print-plus-digital and digital-only packages. The integration into the come-on.de platform, shared across the Ippen group's Sauerland titles, gives the ST a digital reach beyond what a standalone small-town paper could sustain.
