About Die Diabetologie

Die Diabetologie

Die Diabetologie is a German-language specialist journal for diabetology, published eight times a year by Springer Medizin in Berlin as part of Springer Nature. Until 2022 it appeared under the title Der Diabetologe, before being renamed as part of a broad gender-inclusivity initiative by the publisher that replaced titles based on male professional designations with titles based on medical disciplines. The journal provides continuing education for all physicians working in diabetology in practice and hospitals, covering prevention, diagnostic approaches, complication management, and modern therapy strategies. It is closely associated with the Deutsche Diabetes Gesellschaft (DDG), whose members receive special subscription terms and whose practice recommendations are published in its pages. With coverage from volume 1 in 2005 through volume 22 in 2026, it is the central German-language continuing-education journal for diabetes care.

Overview

Die Diabetologie is a continuing-education journal aimed at all physicians active in diabetology, in both office-based practice and hospitals. Its target readership includes specialists in internal medicine and endocrinology and diabetology, physicians with additional training in diabetology, those recognized as diabetologists by the DDG, and physicians in internal medicine, general medicine, and paediatrics with a focus on diabetology.

The journal appears eight times a year, a rhythm that allows it to stay close to clinical developments while giving each lead theme the space of a full issue. Its print ISSN is 2731-7447 and its electronic ISSN is 2731-7455. The journal's concept centres on comprehensive review articles on a current lead topic, which form the core of each issue and convey secured knowledge on diagnostics and therapy with high relevance for daily work, supplemented by case reports and guideline documents. The CME certified-training rubric offers verified results of scientific research and makes physicians' experience usable for daily practice; after reading the articles, readers can test their knowledge and earn CME points online, with the rubric aligned to the specialty's training regulations.

The subscription model includes special terms for DDG members: the annual subscription for members was 67.29 euros plus 29.91 euros domestic postage in 2022, compared with a regular annual price of 196.26 euros plus postage. Membership in the DDG must be demonstrated when taking out the subscription, and billing is handled directly between the subscriber and the publisher. Subscription customer service is provided through the Springer Customer Service Center in Heidelberg.

History

The journal's bibliographic record begins with volume 1 in 2005, when it was launched as Der Diabetologe. From the start it was positioned as the continuing-education journal for diabetology within the Springer Medizin portfolio, serving the growing community of physicians specializing in diabetes care at a time when the prevalence of type 2 diabetes was rising sharply in Germany.

The 2022 renaming to Die Diabetologie was part of Springer Medizin's sweeping equality initiative, in which titles based on male professional designations were replaced with titles based on the medical disciplines themselves, following the concept of "Der Facharzt" becoming "Die Fachdisziplin". Der Diabetologe became Die Diabetologie in the same wave that turned Der Anaesthesist into Die Anaesthesiologie, Der Chirurg into Die Chirurgie, Der Internist into Die Innere Medizin, Der Gynäkologe into Die Gynäkologie, Der Hautarzt into Die Dermatologie, and Der Onkologe into Die Onkologie. The renaming preserved the journal's continuity, with volume numbering continuing seamlessly and the earlier title's ISSN lineage carried forward.

Over its two decades of publication, the journal has become the established venue for the DDG's practice recommendations. Issues regularly carry the society's guidance documents, prepared by expert author groups. The 2022 issue on children and adolescents, for example, brought together leading paediatric diabetologists to set out recommendations on the diagnosis, therapy, and monitoring of diabetes mellitus in young patients, covering type 1 diabetes therapy in detail. The 2025 recommendations on the definition, classification, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis of diabetes mellitus were authored by a broad expert panel and published as the journal's lead guidance document. This role as the publisher of the DDG's practice recommendations gives the journal a quasi-official standing in German diabetes care: it is where the specialty's standards are codified and disseminated.

Coverage and Content

The journal covers all areas of applied diabetology in a practice-oriented manner. Prevention, diagnostic approaches, and complication management stand alongside modern therapy strategies as the core topics. Each issue is built around a lead theme, with comprehensive review articles providing evidence-based information on diagnostics and therapy relevant to daily work.

A distinctive feature is the publication of the DDG's practice recommendations. These guideline documents, prepared by expert groups of the German Diabetes Society, cover topics such as the therapy of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the care of children and adolescents with diabetes. Their appearance in the journal makes it the reference point for standardized diabetes care in Germany.

The CME certified-training rubric provides secured results of scientific research and makes physicians' practical experience usable for daily work. Readers can verify their acquired knowledge online and earn CME points, with the rubric oriented to the specialty's training regulations. Recent issues have addressed topics such as technology in diabetes therapy, including continuous glucose monitoring, automated insulin delivery, and digital applications, as well as vaccination in people with diabetes and the management of diabetes in the context of migration and social diversity. The 2026 lead-theme issue on social diversity in the context of migration, for instance, examined how diabetes care must adapt to a population in which people from different language and cultural backgrounds live together, covering information provision, institutional change, professional qualifications, and the role of technology. All articles in the journal are reviewed.

Organization and Ownership

Die Diabetologie is published by Springer Medizin Verlag GmbH, the medical publishing division of Springer Nature, headquartered in Berlin. The journal's close relationship with the Deutsche Diabetes Gesellschaft is reflected in the special subscription terms for DDG members and in the regular publication of the society's practice recommendations. The journal's aims and scope are presented in both German and English on the publisher's platform, reflecting its openness to international authorship, and the journal is indexed with its own DOI prefix.

Subscription and customer service are handled through the Springer Customer Service Center in Heidelberg, which manages subscriptions, address changes, and website access questions, and offers a toll-free domestic hotline for readers. The editorial office can be contacted directly through the journal's page on the publisher's website. The journal's review process applies to all articles, underpinning its status as a reviewed continuing-education journal rather than a purely professional magazine.

Digital Presence

Die Diabetologie is fully integrated into Springer Medizin's digital ecosystem. The journal's page on the publisher's website presents its aims and scope, the current and recent issues, the newest CME courses drawn from the journal, and the metadata for each volume. The bibliographic coverage runs from volume 1 in 2005 through volume 22 in 2026, with each issue and article available digitally.

The journal's digital identity lives within the Springer Medizin platform rather than on a standalone brand site, which is standard for the publisher's specialist journals. Subscription management, including the special DDG member terms, is handled online and through the customer service centre. Whether the journal maintains dedicated social media channels is not publicly confirmed from the sources consulted.
