About Uetersener Nachrichten
Uetersener Nachrichten
The Uetersener Nachrichten (UeNa) is a daily regional newspaper published in Uetersen, in the Pinneberg district of Schleswig-Holstein, serving the town and the surrounding southern Holstein countryside between Hamburg and the Elbe marshes. Founded in 1887 as the Anzeigeblatt für Uetersen und Umgebung, it celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2014, counting the 1864-founded Uetersener Tageblatt — which it acquired in 1929 — among its forebears. Published Monday through Saturday with a circulation of around 6,000 copies, it has belonged since 2016 to the A. Beig publishing house (Pinneberg), part of the sh:z media group. Its website is uetersener-nachrichten.de, with local coverage also on shz.de.
Overview
The Uetersener Nachrichten covers Uetersen — with around 19,000 inhabitants, known as the "Rosenstadt" (rose town) for its historic rose-growing tradition — and the neighboring communities of Tornesch, Moorrege, and the Haseldorfer Marsch marshlands along the Elbe. The paper appears Monday through Saturday, combining a dedicated local section with the supraregional pages supplied through its publishing group.
Uetersen's identity blends rose heritage, Elbe marshland agriculture, and Hamburg commuter-belt life. The Rosarium Uetersen — one of Germany's oldest rose gardens — anchors the town's cultural self-image, while the surrounding Marsch produces fruit, vegetables, and flowers for the Hamburg market. The paper's readership consists of the town's established households, local businesses, farmers, and commuters.
The paper's publishers are named as Werner F. Ebke and Jan Dirk Elstermann, according to published sources. The UeNa belongs to the Zeitungsgruppe Nord, based in Stade, and competes in its area with the Hamburger Abendblatt's Pinneberg regional section, the Pinneberger Tageblatt, the Wedel-Schulauer Tageblatt, and the Elmshorner Nachrichten.
History
The paper's history begins on Easter Sunday, 10 April 1887, when the first issue of the Anzeigeblatt für Uetersen und Umgebung appeared, promising readers "a politically unbiased, independent and free newspaper." The paper suspended publication during the Weimar hyperinflation and was relaunched in 1924.
In 1929, the Uetersener Nachrichten publishing house acquired the Uetersener Tageblatt — founded in 1864 as the Wochenblatt für Uetersen — uniting the town's two papers. The combined paper's 150th anniversary was celebrated in 2014, counting from the Tageblatt's 1864 founding. During the Nazi era, the paper — founded on principles of political neutrality — became a pronounced National Socialist bulletin; after the Second World War, it returned to impartiality and neutral reporting.
Until early 2016, the paper was published by the Verlag Uetersener Nachrichten GmbH under Lebrecht and Roland von Zielberg. In February 2016, the paper and the A. Beig publishing house announced that A. Beig Druckerei und Verlag GmbH & Co. KG had taken over the newspaper and its weeklies retroactively to the start of 2016. The decision, according to von Zielberg, was driven by "changes in reading behavior and the growing need for digital offerings." The papers had long been printed by A. Beig, and since 2004 their national pages had also come from there. A. Beig is part of the sh:z (Schleswig-Holsteinischer Zeitungsverlag) group.
Coverage and Content
The local section focuses on Uetersen, Tornesch, and the adjacent Marschgebiet: town politics, district affairs, schools, and the clubs and associations of southern Holstein. The rose heritage — the Rosarium, the rose festivals, the remaining rose nurseries — features prominently, alongside Elbe marshland topics: dike maintenance, fruit farming, the tidal Elbe's ecology, and the villages' flood protection.
The Hamburg commuter belt's development pressures — housing construction, transport connections, the balance between village character and suburban growth — are constant themes. The paper covers the Ludwig-Meyn-Gymnasium's activities (including the Uetersen TV student project), local sports clubs, and the cultural life of the Rosenstadt — a local section that treats the town's 19,000 inhabitants with the seriousness of a metropolis — the mark of a local paper that knows its readers by name.
The UeNa also publishes weeklies: the UeNa-Tip (47,500 copies, distributed free to all households weekly, later replaced by the UeNa-Tip am Sonntag) extends the paper's advertising reach. Beyond the local pages, the A. Beig/sh:z central newsroom supplies state politics from Kiel, national news, and special interest sections. The combination — hyper-local reporting from the Rosenstadt's own newsroom, professional national coverage from one of northern Germany's largest media houses — gives the UeNa's readers a complete daily paper rooted in their town.
Organization and Ownership
The Uetersener Nachrichten is published by the A. Beig Druckerei und Verlag GmbH & Co. KG, based in Pinneberg, part of the sh:z media group (Schleswig-Holsteinischer Zeitungsverlag). The takeover in 2016 brought the paper under the roof of one of northern Germany's largest regional media houses, which publishes the Pinneberger Tageblatt, the Elmshorner Nachrichten, the Wedel-Schulauer Tageblatt, and numerous other titles across Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg's commuter belt.
The Uetersen newsroom produces the town's local section, while the central newsroom supplies the supraregional pages — an arrangement that had been in place since 2004, when the paper began taking its national pages from A. Beig. The paper is connected to the Zeitungsgruppe Nord in Stade. Werner F. Ebke and Jan Dirk Elstermann are named as publishers.
The Rosenstadt and Its Paper
Uetersen's rose identity is inseparable from the paper's local character. The town was once one of Europe's great rose-growing centers, with nurseries shipping roses worldwide; the Rosarium Uetersen, founded in the 1930s, preserves this heritage in one of Germany's most beautiful rose gardens. The paper's pages document the rose festivals, the garden's seasons, and the remaining nurseries' work — a floral beat no other German local paper quite matches.
The Marsch landscape adds another distinctive dimension: the Haseldorfer Marsch's fruit orchards, the Elbe dikes, the tidal flats' birdlife, and the villages whose histories are written in flood and reclamation. In a region where Hamburg's expansion meets marshland tradition, the UeNa gives the Rosenstadt and its neighbors a voice that neither the Hamburg papers nor the Kiel-based sh:z titles quite provide.
Readership and Market Position
With around 6,000 sold copies, the Uetersener Nachrichten is a small but deeply rooted daily in a competitive market. Unlike many small-town papers, it faces genuine competition: the Hamburger Abendblatt's Pinneberg section, the Pinneberger Tageblatt, the Wedel-Schulauer Tageblatt, and the Elmshorner Nachrichten are all available in Uetersen. The UeNa's advantage is its exclusive focus on the Rosenstadt and its immediate surroundings — the town's paper in a way the competitors, with their wider remits, cannot match.
The paper's readership encompasses Uetersen's established households, the Tornesch and Marsch communities, and local businesses — readers who have sustained a town paper since 1887 through empire, republic, dictatorship, and reunification. The UeNa's 150th anniversary in 2014 was not just a publishing milestone but a civic one: few institutions in the Rosenstadt have served it so continuously, and the anniversary celebrations reflected the town's attachment to its paper. The free weeklies extend its advertising reach to every household. Like all German regional dailies, the UeNa faces long-term circulation pressure, addressed through the sh:z digital platform, e-paper editions, and digital subscriptions.
Digital Presence
The paper's digital home is uetersener-nachrichten.de, with Uetersen local news also published on the shz.de portal under the Wedel-Uetersen-Tornesch section. The sh:z group's digital platform operates a subscription model with e-paper editions, newsletters, apps, and social media channels. The Uetersen newsroom's stories reach both the town's online readers and the wider sh:z audience across Schleswig-Holstein, while the paper maintains the digital presence expected of a modern local daily.
