About Müritz-Zeitung
Müritz-Zeitung
The Müritz-Zeitung is the local edition of the Nordkurier for the town of Waren (Müritz) and the surrounding Müritz lake district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Appearing Monday through Saturday, it is one of the head papers (Kopfblätter) through which the Neubrandenburg-based Nordkurier covers eastern Mecklenburg, southern Western Pomerania, and the Uckermark. The edition pairs locally produced pages from its Waren newsroom with the shared national and international section of the Nordkurier, which has produced its mantle in-house again since April 2013 with an editorial staff of around 120. The publisher is the Kurierverlags GmbH & Co. KG (Nordkurier Mediengruppe) in Neubrandenburg, owned in equal thirds by the Schwäbischer Verlag, the Kieler Zeitung Verlags- und Druckerei KG, and the Mediengruppe Pressedruck. The Waren edition sold 3,862 copies, serving readers around Germany's largest inland lake.
Overview
The Müritz-Zeitung is a subscription daily newspaper appearing Monday through Saturday, serving Waren (Müritz) — the climatic spa town on the northern shore of the Müritz, Germany's largest lake entirely within its borders — and the surrounding lake district in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. It is published as a head paper of the Nordkurier, the regional daily headquartered in Neubrandenburg, and carries the Nordkurier's shared sections alongside its own locally produced Waren pages, giving readers of the lake district a paper that is both regionally complete and locally rooted.
The Nordkurier publishes 14 editions across its circulation area, each appearing under its own historic title: alongside the Müritz-Zeitung for Waren, these include the Neubrandenburger Zeitung, the Strelitzer Zeitung for Neustrelitz, the Demminer Zeitung, the Pasewalker Zeitung, the Prenzlauer Zeitung and Templiner Zeitung in the Uckermark Kurier, the Insel-Zeitung for Usedom, the Haff-Zeitung for Ueckermünde, and the Mecklenburger Schweiz editions for Teterow and Malchin. The Waren edition's sold circulation was reported at 3,862 copies; an older industry table credited the Müritz-Zeitung with 9,226 sold copies in the fourth quarter of 2014.
The publisher is the Kurierverlags GmbH & Co. KG, operating as the Nordkurier Mediengruppe from Neubrandenburg. The ownership is divided equally among three publishing groups: the Schwäbischer Verlag, the Kieler Zeitung Verlags- und Druckerei KG, and the Mediengruppe Pressedruck, each holding one third.
History
The Müritz-Zeitung's history is the history of the Nordkurier, which was first published on 2 April 1990 as the successor to Freie Erde, the newspaper of the Neubrandenburg district in the German Democratic Republic. Founded in the months of German reunification, the Nordkurier was among the new regional dailies built on the infrastructure — printing plants, distribution networks, and staff — of the former GDR district press, and it established itself as the leading newspaper of eastern Mecklenburg.
In the 1990s and 2000s the Nordkurier organized its circulation area into a system of local editions with historic head-paper titles, giving towns such as Waren their own mastheads within the shared paper. The Müritz-Zeitung became the Waren edition's identity, rooting the paper in the town on the Müritz.
A significant production chapter ran from April 2009 to March 2013, when the Nordkurier did not produce its mantle section itself but received it from the Schwerin-based mv:m Mantelredaktion GmbH. In April 2013 the paper brought mantle production back in-house, expanding its editorial staff by 14 to 120 employees. The move coincided with the construction of a new print center with a new press and a change of the newspaper's format from Rhenish to Berlin format — a major technical and editorial investment in the paper's future. The reorganization also reflected editorial differences: the cooperation with the Schweriner Volkszeitung's layout had become harder to sustain, and the Nordkurier's management concluded that differing editorial priorities required an independent mantle newsroom.
Like the entire East German regional press, the Nordkurier and its editions have faced sustained circulation decline since the 1990s, as well as the structural challenge of serving a sparsely populated, economically weaker region. The Müritz-Zeitung has shared in this trend, even as the Müritz lake district itself has grown as a tourism destination.
Coverage and Content
The Müritz-Zeitung's local pages cover Waren (Müritz) and the surrounding lake district: the town council and administration, the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district authority, tourism — the economic lifeblood of the Müritz region — as well as clubs, schools, culture, and the everyday life of the lakeside communities. Waren, with its historic old town, its harbor, and its status as a Heilbad (climatic spa), generates a distinctive mix of municipal news and tourism reporting, from harbor festivals to nature conservation in the Müritz National Park nearby.
The shared Nordkurier sections provide the national and international news, business, sports, and culture pages, produced by the Neubrandenburg newsroom since the 2013 reorganization. The paper also publishes the Anzeigenkurier, the group's weekly advertising paper, which appears in eight editions with a combined weekly circulation of 321,000 copies.
Regular features include local sports coverage, event calendars for the lake district's busy summer season, service pages, and special supplements tied to tourism, the harbor, and regional occasions. The edition's advertising sections serve the tourism industry — hotels, restaurants, boat rentals, and holiday apartments — that defines much of the local economy around the Müritz. Seasonal coverage follows the rhythm of the lake: the spring fitting-out of the sailing fleet, the summer regattas and harbor festivals, the autumn quieting of the resort towns, and the winter reports on ice conditions and off-season life in a region where tourism shapes the calendar.
Organization and Ownership
The publisher of the Müritz-Zeitung is the Kurierverlags GmbH & Co. KG (Nordkurier Mediengruppe), headquartered in Neubrandenburg. The company is owned in equal shares of one third each by the Schwäbischer Verlag, the Kieler Zeitung Verlags- und Druckerei KG, and the Mediengruppe Pressedruck — a consortium of West German publishing groups that acquired the former GDR district paper in the 1990s.
The Waren newsroom operates as the local editorial office for the Müritz-Zeitung edition, producing the district's pages with its own reporters who know the lake communities, the harbor businesses, and the tourism operators personally. The editor-in-chief of the specific edition is not publicly confirmed in the sources reviewed for this profile; editorial leadership is exercised at the Nordkurier group level from Neubrandenburg, where the mantle newsroom of around 120 staff produces the shared sections for all 14 editions.
Digital Presence
The Müritz-Zeitung's digital home is the Nordkurier portal at nordkurier.de, which presents the group's editions with local sections for towns including Waren. The site offers current news from the Müritz region, the e-paper edition reproducing the printed paper, and digital subscription options, with premium content behind a paywall.
The Nordkurier's digital strategy serves a large but sparsely populated circulation area stretching from the Baltic coast of Usedom to the Uckermark in Brandenburg. For the Müritz-Zeitung, the portal extends the Waren edition's reach to holiday guests and second-home owners around the lake — an audience of considerable economic importance to the region — while the e-paper and mobile offerings serve the edition's subscriber base. Social media channels carry breaking local news and event reminders to readers who may only spend the summer months in the district. Like every German regional daily, the paper faces the ongoing task of converting print loyalty into digital readership as circulation continues its long decline, a challenge sharpened in the east by lower household incomes and the dispersed settlement structure of the lake district.
