About Donauwörther Zeitung

Donauwörther Zeitung

The Donauwörther Zeitung is a regional daily newspaper published in Donauwörth, Bavaria, as the local edition of the Augsburger Allgemeine for the southern part of the Donau-Ries district. It is the daily paper of record for the Donauwörth area, covering a town of regional importance at the confluence of the Danube and the Wörnitz, home to major employers such as Airbus Helicopters' German headquarters. The paper's most recently reported sold circulation stands at 11,981 copies per issue Monday through Saturday, making it one of the stronger-selling district editions in the Augsburger Allgemeine family. It belongs to the Mediengruppe Pressedruck publishing group in Augsburg and appears in print, as an e-paper, and through the Augsburger Allgemeine's digital platforms. The Donauwörther Zeitung shares the group's centrally produced pages with sister editions across Swabia but is distinguished by its locally reported section devoted to Donauwörth and the southern Donau-Ries district.

Overview

The Donauwörther Zeitung appears six days a week, Monday to Saturday, serving the city of Donauwörth and the southern municipalities of the Donau-Ries district in northern Swabia. Its circulation area extends across the southern half of the district, including towns and villages such as Rain, Kaisheim, Marxheim, Tapfheim, and Mertingen, while the northern part of the district around Nördlingen is served by the sister edition Rieser Nachrichten. Together the two editions give the Augsburger Allgemeine group comprehensive coverage of the entire Donau-Ries district.

Like all district editions of the Augsburger Allgemeine, the Donauwörther Zeitung combines a locally produced editorial section with the group's supra-regional mantle pages. The local book carries reporting from Donauwörth's city council, the district administration, local courts, schools, churches, clubs, and businesses, while the mantle delivers Bavarian state politics, national and international news, business, culture, features, and opinion from the central newsroom in Augsburg. The paper's sold circulation of 11,981 copies reflects a loyal subscription base in a region where the daily newspaper remains a central household medium.

Donauwörth itself gives the paper a distinctive local agenda. The town is one of Swabia's historically significant cities, a former free imperial city, and today an industrial center anchored by Airbus Helicopters' German headquarters and plant, the Käthe Kruse doll manufacturer, and a strong medium-sized business sector. The paper covers these employers, the town's infrastructure projects, and its cultural life, from the historic old town to the annual festivals that mark the Swabian calendar.

The paper faces modest competition in its market from free advertising papers and from online-only local offerings such as the Donau-Ries-Aktuell news blog, but as a paid daily with a staffed local newsroom it remains the only publication providing comprehensive daily print journalism for the southern Donau-Ries district. Like most German regional dailies, it has seen gradual circulation erosion over the past two decades, and the publisher has answered with digital subscription products, the e-paper, and deeper integration of the edition's content into the Augsburger Allgemeine's apps and newsletters. The subscription-heavy sales structure continues to underpin the paper's stability: readers who receive the Donauwörther Zeitung each morning form the core audience that advertisers in the district seek to reach.

History

The Donauwörther Zeitung belongs to the post-war generation of the Swabian regional press that grew out of the Augsburger Allgemeine's predecessor, the Schwäbische Landeszeitung. On 30 October 1945, Curt Alexander Frenzel and Johann Wilhelm Naumann received the American military government's license to publish the Schwäbische Landeszeitung in Augsburg, one of the first licensed newspapers of the post-war era in Bavaria. From this foundation the paper expanded into a network of district editions across Bavarian Swabia, each serving its local area with its own editorial section.

On 1 November 1959 the Schwäbische Landeszeitung adopted the name Augsburger Allgemeine, under which the paper and its editions are still published. The Donauwörther Zeitung developed within this system as the edition for Donauwörth and the southern Donau-Ries district, printed in Augsburg and distributed each morning across its circulation area. Over the decades it became the established daily for the region, outlasting smaller competitors and consolidating its position as the district's paper of record.

The publisher, Mediengruppe Pressedruck, grew alongside its flagship into one of Germany's significant regional publishing groups, with the Augsburger Allgemeine as its core title and a family of local editions stretching from Aichach and Friedberg in the east to Neu-Ulm and Mindelheim in the west, plus the Neuburger Rundschau and Landsberger Tagblatt in Upper Bavaria. Group management is led by Andreas Scherer as chairman, with Alexandra Holland and Edgar Benkler.

Coverage and Content

The Donauwörther Zeitung's local section covers the full range of public life in Donauwörth and the southern Donau-Ries district. City politics in Donauwörth forms a core beat: the city council, the mayor's office, planning and infrastructure decisions, and the town's budget. District-level reporting follows the Donau-Ries district council and administration, while the paper covers the courts with regular reports from proceedings in the region.

The local economy receives close attention, reflecting the district's industrial character. The paper reports on Airbus Helicopters, the town's largest employer, on the medium-sized industrial and craft businesses of the region, on agriculture, and on retail and tourism. Education coverage follows the district's schools, including the Gymnasien and vocational schools, and cultural reporting spans concerts, exhibitions, theater, and the town's historic festivals.

Club and association life is a staple of the local pages: sports clubs from village football through regional leagues, volunteer fire brigades, music and shooting societies, church parishes, and traditional festivals all appear regularly. The paper also carries the family announcements typical of the German regional press, including birth, marriage, and death notices.

The mantle sections provide Bavarian state politics, national and international news, business and finance, culture, travel, motoring, health, and opinion from the Augsburger Allgemeine's central newsroom. Weekend editions include magazines and supplements, and the paper's advertising sections serve the district's businesses with display and classified advertising.

Organization and Ownership

The Donauwörther Zeitung is published by the Mediengruppe Pressedruck, headquartered in Augsburg. The group is one of Bavaria's largest regional publishers, with the Augsburger Allgemeine as its flagship daily and an extensive family of local editions across Swabia and Upper Bavaria, including the Donau-Zeitung in Dillingen, the Günzburger Zeitung, the Friedberger Allgemeine, the Landsberger Tagblatt, the Neu-Ulmer Zeitung, the Rieser Nachrichten in Nördlingen, and others.

Group management consists of Andreas Scherer as chairman of the management board, Alexandra Holland, and Edgar Benkler. Editorial production combines the central Augsburger Allgemeine newsroom in Augsburg, which produces the supra-regional pages for all editions, with local editorial teams responsible for the district sections. No separately named editor-in-chief for the Donauwörther Zeitung alone is publicly identified; editorial leadership sits at the group level. Printing takes place at the group's Augsburg print center, from which all editions are produced and distributed each morning.

Digital Presence

The Donauwörther Zeitung's reporting appears online through the Augsburger Allgemeine portal at augsburger-allgemeine.de, one of the most visited regional news websites in Bavaria. The portal publishes the edition's local stories from Donauwörth and the Donau-Ries district alongside the group's wider coverage, with continuously updated news, photo galleries, and video. A selection of articles is freely accessible, while full access is available through digital subscriptions.

An e-paper edition reproduces the printed Donauwörther Zeitung page for page for reading on computers, tablets, and smartphones. The Augsburger Allgemeine's mobile app carries all district editions, including the Donauwörther Zeitung, with features such as full-text search, a reading list, a read-aloud function, daily puzzles, a Sunday puzzle magazine, podcasts, and the weekly digital regional paper "extra." Push notifications alert readers to breaking news, and the group's newsletters and social media channels extend the edition's reach to digital-first audiences.
