About Dürener Zeitung

Dürener Zeitung

The Dürener Zeitung is a regional daily newspaper published in Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, as the local edition of the Aachener Zeitung for the southern part of the Düren district. With its first issue appearing on 29 September 1872, it is one of the oldest continuously published newspapers in the Rhineland, tracing its origins to the Dürener Sonntagsblatt für Stadt und Umgegend. The paper is the official gazette for announcements of the city of Düren and carries the historic subtitles Dürener Anzeiger and Dürener Generalanzeiger. It is published by the Medienhaus Aachen GmbH, appears Monday through Saturday in the Rhenish newspaper format, and reported a sold circulation of 10,959 copies per issue. The paper's editor-in-chief is Thomas Thelen. In Düren the Dürener Zeitung competes directly with the Dürener Nachrichten, the local edition of the sister paper Aachener Nachrichten, with the two titles differing primarily in their local sections and parts of the supra-regional pages.

Overview

The Dürener Zeitung serves the city of Düren and the southern municipalities of the Düren district, a region between Aachen and Cologne shaped by industry, the lignite mining areas of the Rhenish coalfield, and the Eifel foothills. Düren itself is a medium-sized city with a strong industrial tradition in paper manufacturing, metalworking, and mechanical engineering, and the paper covers the city's economic transformation, including the structural change in the coal regions and the development of new industries.

As a local edition of the Aachener Zeitung, the Dürener Zeitung combines a locally produced section from its Düren newsroom with the supra-regional pages of the Aachener Zeitung's central newsroom. The Aachener Zeitung appears in three editions, one each for the Aachen city region and the districts of Düren and Heinsberg, all using the Aachener Zeitung name as the umbrella title, with the local editions carrying their own historic names. The Dürener Zeitung's sold circulation of 10,959 copies reflects a loyal subscription base in the southern Düren district.

The paper is the city's official announcement organ, publishing the municipal notices of the city of Düren, a function that underscores its institutional role in local public life. Its local newsroom is based in Düren itself.

History

The Dürener Zeitung's history began in 1872 under the name Dürener Sonntagsblatt für Stadt und Umgegend, founded in the early years of the German Empire's press expansion. The paper grew into the town's leading daily, and in 1909 it took over the Dürener Anzeiger und Unterhaltungsblatt, the oldest regional newspaper for the town and district, which had been founded in 1818 as the Landräthliches Korrespondenz-Blatt by the Düren publisher Franz Knoll. Since that takeover the Dürener Zeitung has carried the Dürener Anzeiger title as a subtitle, a tradition maintained to this day alongside the Dürener Generalanzeiger subtitle.

The paper survived the First World War, the Weimar Republic, and the National Socialist era, and in 1947, in the difficult post-war years, it joined the Aachener Volkszeitung, the predecessor of the Aachener Zeitung. From that point it developed as the Düren local edition within the Aachen publishing group, printed in the Rhenish format and serving the southern Düren district.

In the modern era the Aachener Zeitung and the Aachener Nachrichten, long the two rival dailies of the Aachen region, were brought together in the Medienhaus Aachen. The Belgian media group Mediahuis became active in Germany through its involvement with the Aachen papers, and the two titles were merged organizationally while maintaining their distinct identities and local editions. The Dürener Zeitung and the Dürener Nachrichten continue to appear as parallel local editions for Düren, a unique competitive situation within a single publishing house.

The publishing group has also developed the paper's Sunday presence: the Dürener Zeitung am Sonntag, formerly the Super Sonntag, is distributed free to all households as an advertising paper, and the group publishes the Dürener Illustrierte magazine.

Coverage and Content

The Dürener Zeitung's local section covers the full spectrum of public life in Düren and the southern Düren district. City politics in Düren forms a central beat: the city council, the mayor's office, planning and construction decisions, and the city budget. The paper reports on the district administration, covers the courts and police, and follows the local economy closely, from the paper and metalworking industries to the structural transformation of the lignite regions, the development of commercial areas, and the concerns of retail and skilled crafts.

Education reporting spans the city's schools, including the Gymnasien and vocational colleges, while the paper covers the churches, clubs, and associations that structure community life: sports clubs from grassroots football through regional leagues, volunteer fire brigades, carnival societies in the Rhenish tradition, music groups, and the calendar of town festivals, markets, and Christmas markets. Cultural coverage follows concerts, exhibitions, and theater, and the paper documents the region's heritage, from Düren's historic old town to the industrial monuments of the area.

The supra-regional pages from the Aachener Zeitung supply state politics from Düsseldorf, national and international news, business and finance, sports, culture, and opinion, with live tickers for Alemannia Aachen and coverage of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine cross-border region. The Aachener Zeitung and Aachener Nachrichten have received the European Newspaper Award multiple times, most recently in 2012, recognizing the group's editorial and design quality. The paper carries the classified and display advertising, family announcements, and death notices customary in the German regional press.

Organization and Ownership

The Dürener Zeitung is published by the Medienhaus Aachen GmbH, the publishing house of the Aachener Zeitung and Aachener Nachrichten. The group's editor-in-chief is Thomas Thelen. The Aachener Zeitung appears in three editions for the Aachen city region and the districts of Düren and Heinsberg, with local editions including the Dürener Zeitung for the southern Düren district, the Jülicher Zeitung for the northern part of the district, the Eifeler Zeitung for Monschau, the Eschweiler/Stolberger Zeitung, and the Geilenkirchener Zeitung and Heinsberger Zeitung for the Heinsberg district.

The Medienhaus Aachen operates the AZ-Web.de news portal, which has published news and reports from the Aachen, Düren, and Heinsberg regions and the Euregio since 1999, covering politics, business, sport, culture, society, science, digital affairs, motoring, travel, health, family, and relationships. The group's digital and print operations are integrated, with the local editions' reporting feeding the shared portal. Printing of the group's titles takes place at the Medienhaus Aachen's production facilities, from which the daily editions are distributed each morning across the Aachen city region and the Düren and Heinsberg districts. The publishing house maintains local offices and newsrooms in the edition towns, including the Dürener Zeitung's Düren newsroom, preserving the local editorial presence that distinguishes the district editions from the centrally produced pages.

Digital Presence

The Dürener Zeitung's reporting appears online through the Aachener Zeitung's digital platforms at aachener-zeitung.de and the AZ-Web brand, where Düren-area news is published alongside the group's wider regional coverage with continuously updated articles, photo galleries, video, and live tickers. Selected content is freely accessible, while full access is available through digital subscriptions.

An e-paper edition reproduces the printed Dürener Zeitung page for page, and the group's mobile apps deliver the day's edition to smartphones and tablets with push notifications for breaking news. Newsletters bring selected stories to readers' inboxes, and the paper's local reporting circulates through the group's social media channels. The Sunday paper and the Dürener Illustrierte magazine extend the brand's presence beyond the daily, giving the Dürener Zeitung a multi-platform footprint in the southern Düren district.
