About Echaz-Bote

Echaz-Bote

The Echaz-Bote is a regional daily newspaper published in Reutlingen, Baden-Württemberg, as a local edition of the Reutlinger General-Anzeiger (GEA) for the Echaz valley and the communities around Reutlingen. Named after the Echaz river, which rises on the Swabian Alb near Honau and flows through Pfullingen and Reutlingen before joining the Neckar, the paper serves the towns and villages of the paper's core circulation area in the Neckar-Alb region. The Reutlinger General-Anzeiger, founded on 11 November 1888, is one of the oldest continuously published regional dailies in Baden-Württemberg, with a sold circulation of 30,756 copies, and the Echaz-Bote carries its locally reported pages for the Echaz area alongside the GEA's supra-regional content. The paper appears Monday through Saturday in print and digitally through the gea.de portal, the GEA e-paper, and the group's mobile apps.

Overview

The Echaz-Bote serves the Echaz valley communities around Reutlingen, including Pfullingen, Eningen unter Achalm, Lichtenstein, and the surrounding villages at the foot of the Swabian Alb. Reutlingen itself, a city at the northwestern edge of the Alb with a strong industrial tradition in textiles, mechanical engineering, and precision manufacturing, forms the center of the GEA's circulation area, and the Echaz-Bote's local pages focus on the municipalities along the Echaz river and in the Alb foothills.

As a local edition of the Reutlinger General-Anzeiger, the Echaz-Bote combines a locally produced section with the GEA's supra-regional pages, which are produced by the paper's central newsroom in Reutlingen. The GEA's distribution covers the Neckar-Alb region, and the paper's local editions give each part of the circulation area its own editorial identity while sharing the centrally produced content. The Echaz-Bote appears six days a week as a subscription daily, with the subscription model typical of the Swabian regional press.

The Echaz river, the paper's namesake, is a defining geographical feature of the circulation area: rising as a karst spring south of Honau, cascading over limestone terraces at Pfullingen, and flowing through Reutlingen's old town, it has shaped settlement, industry, and even flooding history in the region, most recently during the Echaz flood of June 2013.

The GEA's edition family gives each part of its circulation area a distinct editorial voice while sharing production and the supra-regional pages, a model that has allowed the paper to maintain local relevance across the Neckar-Alb region. The Echaz-Bote's readers include the towns' long-established families, commuters working in Reutlingen, Tübingen, or the Stuttgart region, and residents of the Alb foothill villages for whom the paper is the primary source of local news. The paper's subscription-based distribution reflects the loyalty typical of the Swabian regional press, where the daily paper remains a household fixture even as print circulations decline nationally.

History

The Reutlinger General-Anzeiger first appeared in Reutlingen on 11 November 1888, founded in the era of the Generalanzeiger press, the mass-circulation independent newspapers that emerged across Germany between 1870 and 1900 with the promise of political and confessional neutrality. The GEA grew into the leading regional daily of the Neckar-Alb region, serving Reutlingen and its surroundings through the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, the National Socialist era, and the Federal Republic.

After the death of publisher Eugen Lachenmann in 1985, his Estonian-born son-in-law Valdo Lehari took over the management of the paper. Under his leadership the company built its first printing plant in Reutlingen-Betzingen, which began operations in 1987 and was replaced by the current joint-venture printing operation in 2004. After Valdo Lehari's death on 28 November 2010, his son Valdo Lehari Jr. took over the management, continuing the family ownership that has characterized the paper.

The Echaz-Bote developed within this publishing house as the GEA's local edition for the Echaz valley, giving the communities along the river their own masthead and local editorial focus within the GEA's edition family. The paper has published continuously as part of the GEA group, serving its area through the transformation of the regional press in the digital age.

Coverage and Content

The Echaz-Bote's local section covers the public life of the Echaz valley communities in depth. Municipal politics forms the backbone: the town councils of Pfullingen, Eningen, and Lichtenstein, the Reutlingen city council for matters affecting the wider area, planning and infrastructure decisions, and the interplay between the towns and the Reutlingen district administration. The paper reports on the local economy, from the industrial employers of the Reutlingen area to the skilled crafts, retail, and tourism businesses of the Alb foothills.

The paper covers the courts and police, education from primary schools through the Gymnasien, and the churches, clubs, and associations that structure community life: sports clubs, volunteer fire brigades, music societies, traditional costume groups, and the calendar of town festivals, markets, and Christmas markets. Environmental and infrastructure topics with local resonance, such as flood protection along the Echaz, the development of the Alb foothills, and transport connections to Reutlingen and the Stuttgart region, receive sustained attention.

Cultural coverage follows concerts, exhibitions, and theater in the region, and the paper documents the area's heritage, from the medieval roots of the Alb foothill towns to the industrial history of the Reutlingen area. The paper also covers the region's distinctive landmarks and leisure topics: the Achalm mountain overlooking Reutlingen, the outlet shopping city of Metzingen nearby, the Swabian Alb's hiking and nature attractions, and the seasonal calendar of festivals that draws visitors to the area. The supra-regional pages from the Reutlinger General-Anzeiger supply Baden-Württemberg state politics from Stuttgart, national and international news, business and finance, sports, culture, and opinion. The paper carries the classified and display advertising, family announcements, and death notices customary in the German regional press.

Organization and Ownership

The Echaz-Bote is published by the Reutlinger General-Anzeiger Verlag, the family-owned publishing house of the Reutlinger General-Anzeiger in Reutlingen. The company is led by Valdo Lehari Jr., who took over management after his father's death in 2010, continuing a family publishing tradition that extends back through Valdo Lehari Sr. to Eugen Lachenmann.

Editorial production combines the GEA's central newsroom in Reutlingen, which produces the supra-regional pages, with local editorial teams responsible for the edition sections, including the Echaz-Bote's Echaz valley pages. Printing takes place at the group's modern printing operation, the successor to the Betzingen plant opened in 1987. The GEA's sold circulation of 30,756 copies makes it a mid-sized German regional daily, and the paper has maintained its independent family ownership in an era of increasing press concentration.

Digital Presence

The Echaz-Bote's stories appear online at gea.de, the Reutlinger General-Anzeiger's digital news portal and the leading regional news website for the Neckar-Alb region. The portal publishes the edition's local reporting alongside the group's wider coverage, with continuously updated news, photo galleries, and video content. Selected articles are freely accessible, while full access is available through digital subscriptions.

The GEA e-paper app reproduces the printed paper page for page, allowing subscribers to read the Echaz-Bote in its familiar layout on computers, tablets, and smartphones, with existing digital subscribers able to use both the app and the paid online offering with their access data. The group's mobile apps deliver the day's news with push notifications for breaking stories, and newsletters bring selected stories to readers' inboxes. The paper's local reporting also circulates through the group's social media channels, extending the reach of Echaz valley journalism to readers who encounter the paper primarily online.
