About Eschweiler Zeitung

Eschweiler Zeitung

The Eschweiler Zeitung is the Eschweiler local edition of the Aachener Zeitung, the regional daily of the Aachen region. It appears as the joint edition "Eschweiler/Stolberger Zeitung" for the cities of Eschweiler and Stolberg in the Aachen city region, carrying the Aachener Zeitung's supra-regional pages together with a dedicated local section. Until 1996 the edition appeared under the historic title "Bote an der Inde," a newspaper tradition in Eschweiler reaching back to 1848. The Aachener Zeitung is published in Aachen by Mediahuis, the Belgian media group, and its editor-in-chief is Bernd Mathieu. The paper's digital home is the AZ-Web.de portal at aachener-zeitung.de.

Overview

The Eschweiler Zeitung appears Monday through Saturday as a subscription daily in the Rhenish format, combining the Aachener Zeitung's regional and supra-regional coverage with local pages for Eschweiler and Stolberg. Eschweiler, the edition's namesake city, is a former coal mining city of around 55,000 residents in the Aachen city region, with a history shaped by the Eschweiler Bergwerks-Verein, one of Prussia's first joint-stock companies, and the coal and steel industries of the Inde valley. Stolberg, the edition's second city, is the historic brass and copper city of the region.

The Aachener Zeitung appears in three editions for the Aachen city region and the districts of Düren and Heinsberg, and the Eschweiler/Stolberg edition covers the eastern part of the Aachen city region. The paper's distribution area reflects the structure of the region: the former mining cities, the commuter belt around Aachen, and the Euregio Meuse-Rhine borderland with Belgium and the Netherlands. The region's position at the three-country corner gives the paper's reporting a European dimension unusual for a German local daily: cross-border commuting, the Euregio's institutions, and the binational labor market are standing topics in the paper's coverage.

History

The Eschweiler press tradition reaches back to 1848, when the revolutionary year brought the founding of the Eschweiler Anzeiger and the Bote an der Inde, the messenger on the Inde river. The Bote an der Inde documented Eschweiler's transformation from a market town into an industrial city: the rise of the coal mines, the Eschweiler Bergwerks-Verein's founding in 1834, the railway's arrival in 1841, and the growth of the steel and manufacturing industries.

The Aachener Zeitung's own history begins in 1946, when it was founded as the Aachener Volkszeitung by Johannes Ernst, Jakob Schmitz, Albert Maas, and Josef Hofmann, first printed on February 22, 1946. It was the first newspaper published by Germans after the Second World War under license number 8 from the British military government, issued for a Christian-democratic daily. The paper appeared initially two or three times weekly, daily every working day from September 1, 1949, and was renamed the Aachener Zeitung on March 6, 1996, the 50th anniversary of the license.

In January 1975 the publishers of the Aachener Zeitung and the Aachener Nachrichten decided to bring the two dailies together in the Zeitungsverlag Aachen GmbH, combining advertising, administration, and technical facilities while keeping the two editorial offices independent and in competition. In 2003 the papers partially merged their supra-regional sections and individual local sections. The Bote an der Inde became the Eschweiler/Stolberger Zeitung edition of the Aachener Zeitung in 1996, and in 2022 the Belgian Mediahuis group became active in the Aachen publishing house. The Eschweiler Zeitung thus carries a double heritage: the Bote an der Inde's local tradition reaching back to the 1848 revolution, and the Aachener Zeitung's postwar democratic press tradition as the first German-licensed newspaper after the Second World War.

Coverage and Content

The Eschweiler Zeitung's local pages cover the public life of Eschweiler and Stolberg in depth. Eschweiler city politics forms a core beat: the city council, the mayor's office, the redevelopment of the former mining areas, the Blausteinsee lake, and the municipal budget. The paper reports on the Aachen city region's administration, covers the courts and police, and follows the regional economy: the successor industries of the coal era, the retail sector, the skilled crafts, and the commuter economy oriented toward Aachen.

The paper covers the emergency services and volunteer fire brigades, education from primary schools through the Gymnasien, and the churches, clubs, and associations that structure Rhineland community life: sports clubs, choral societies, shooting clubs, carnival societies, and the calendar of town festivals, the Eschweiler carnival, one of the Rhineland's notable carnival celebrations, markets, and the Christmas markets. Cultural coverage follows concerts, exhibitions, and theater, and the paper documents the region's heritage, from the coal mining era to the present. The paper's reporters attend the city councils' meetings, cover the local courts, and report from the scene of breaking news, maintaining the on-the-ground presence that distinguishes a staffed local daily from a remote news desk.

The supra-regional pages of the Aachener Zeitung supply national and international news, business and finance, sports, culture, and opinion, with a focus on the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. The paper carries the classified and display advertising, family announcements, and death notices customary in the German regional press. Reader service journalism addresses the practical questions of daily life in the eastern Aachen region: transport connections to Aachen, Düren, and Cologne, cross-border commuting to Belgium and the Netherlands, childcare, healthcare, and housing, alongside the profiles, interviews, and historical retrospectives that connect the paper's readers to their region's industrial heritage.

Organization and Ownership

The Eschweiler Zeitung is published as a local edition of the Aachener Zeitung, which is published in Aachen and belongs to Mediahuis, the Belgian media group that became active in the Aachen publishing house in 2022. The Aachener Zeitung's editor-in-chief is Bernd Mathieu, who has led the paper since 1995 and the Aachener Nachrichten since 2003, a dual role that was new for Germany at the time.

Editorial production combines the Eschweiler local newsroom, which produces the edition's local pages, with the Aachen central editorial office for the supra-regional content. The Aachener Zeitung and the Aachener Nachrichten are printed in the Rhenish format by Mediahuis. Financial details for the individual local editions are not disclosed separately. The Mediahuis group's ownership, as one of Europe's major newspaper publishers, gives the Eschweiler Zeitung access to shared resources in printing, distribution, advertising sales, and digital technology, while the paper's local newsroom maintains the editorial autonomy on which its Eschweiler and Stolberg readers depend.

Digital Presence

The Eschweiler Zeitung's digital home is the Aachener Zeitung's AZ-Web.de portal at aachener-zeitung.de, which has operated since 1999 and carries news and reports from the Aachen, Düren, and Heinsberg regions and the Euregio. The portal offers continuously updated news across politics, business, sports, culture, society, science, and digital topics, alongside live tickers for Alemannia Aachen, opinion, and background reporting.

The paper offers an e-paper edition reproducing the printed paper page for page, and the digital daily evening news "AmAbend" provides photo galleries and videos from 7 pm. As a subscription daily, much of the paper's digital content sits behind a paywall. The Eschweiler Zeitung's local journalism circulates through the group's social media channels, extending the paper's coverage of Eschweiler and Stolberg to readers who encounter the paper primarily online, while the printed daily continues to serve its core subscription base in the cities whose press tradition reaches back to 1848. The digital platform ensures that the paper's reporting reaches the commuters to Aachen, the cross-border workers, and the younger readers who form the future of the paper's audience in the Euregio borderland.
