About Fränkischer Anzeiger
Fränkischer Anzeiger
The Fränkischer Anzeiger is the local daily newspaper of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Middle Franconia, Bavaria, and one of the oldest continuously family-owned local papers in Germany. Founded in 1866 by Johann Michael Schneider, it has remained in family ownership to this day, published by the Rothenburg media house ROTABENE. The paper's local section forms an independent journalistic and economic unit rooted in the Rothenburg region, while its national and international pages have been supplied by the Nürnberger Nachrichten since 1965. As the first and most comprehensive source of information on current affairs in the Rothenburg region and the adjoining Franconian-Hohenlohe part of Württemberg, the Fränkischer Anzeiger is also the area's decisive advertising medium. An online version of the paper has been published since February 2003.
Overview
The Fränkischer Anzeiger appears daily as the subscription newspaper of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and its surrounding countryside. Its distribution area covers the Rothenburger Land, the gently rolling Franconian Heights around one of Germany's most famous historic towns, extending into the neighbouring Franconian-Hohenlohe districts of Baden-Württemberg. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, with its completely preserved medieval old town, is a town of around 11,000 inhabitants that receives several million visitors a year; the paper serves both the resident population and the local economy that lives from and with tourism, crafts, agriculture and the town's role as a regional centre.
The readership of the Fränkischer Anzeiger is the locally anchored population of the Rothenburg region: the innkeepers and retailers of the old town, the farmers of the Franconian Heights, the craftspeople, the employees of the town's medium-sized industrial employers, and the engaged citizens who fill the clubs, the town council and the church congregations. The paper's local pages are, in the words of its own self-description, the first and most comprehensive source of information on the region's current affairs, and the title's longevity, more than 150 years in family hands, has made it an institution of unusual continuity in a media landscape otherwise marked by concentration and consolidation. Its advertising pages make it the decisive marketing channel for the regional economy.
History
The Fränkischer Anzeiger was founded in 1866 by Johann Michael Schneider, in an era when the local press of the German states was expanding rapidly and Rothenburg, then a quiet country town in the Kingdom of Bavaria, acquired its own newspaper. The paper survived the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, two world wars and the division and reunification of Germany, remaining throughout in the ownership of the founding family. This continuity of family ownership across more than a century and a half makes the Fränkischer Anzeiger one of the oldest family-owned local newspapers in Germany, a rarity in an industry in which most comparable titles have long since passed into the hands of regional media groups.
A decisive step in the paper's modern history came in 1965, when the Fränkischer Anzeiger began taking its national section, the so-called Mantelteil, from the Nürnberger Nachrichten. This cooperation follows the classic German Kopfblatt model: the local newsroom in Rothenburg produces the local and regional pages independently, while the supra-regional news, comment and features come from the large Nuremberg daily. The arrangement has given the small Rothenburg paper the journalistic breadth of a major regional newspaper while preserving the editorial independence and economic autonomy of its local section, which the publishing house describes as an unchanged independent unit.
The publishing house itself has grown far beyond the newspaper. Under the name ROTABENE Medienhaus, the Rothenburg family business traces its roots to 1866 and has developed into a medium-sized modern media service provider covering digital, offset and large-format printing as well as multimedia. Since 1990 the media house, with around 100 employees, has been based in the southern industrial area of Rothenburg at Erlbacher Straße 102-104, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber. In February 2003 the Fränkischer Anzeiger launched its online version, extending the 19th-century-founded title into the digital age.
Coverage and Content
The local section of the Fränkischer Anzeiger is the paper's defining product. It covers the town politics of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the district administration of Ansbach, the surrounding municipalities of the Franconian Heights, the courts and the police, and the economic life of a region shaped by tourism, agriculture, crafts and medium-sized industry. The paper reports on the town council's decisions on the preservation and development of the historic old town, on the tourism industry that defines Rothenburg's economy, on the Christmas museum and the year-round visitor business, and on the tensions between a world-famous heritage site and the everyday needs of its residents.
The paper follows the region's clubs, schools, churches and volunteer fire services with the thoroughness characteristic of the German local press, and its sports pages cover the local football and handball leagues. The national and international section, the business pages and much of the culture coverage come from the Nürnberger Nachrichten, giving Rothenburg readers the full service of a large regional daily. Family announcements, church notices, event listings and the classified and display advertising complete the paper. The ROTABENE Medienhaus also publishes the Evangelisches Sonntagsblatt aus Bayern, the Protestant Sunday paper for Bavaria, from Rothenburg, underlining the media house's role as a publishing centre beyond its home town.
Organization and Ownership
The Fränkischer Anzeiger is published by the ROTABENE Medienhaus, the Rothenburg family business whose roots go back to the paper's founding in 1866. The company describes itself as a Rothenburg traditional enterprise that has grown from its 19th-century origins into a medium-sized modern media service provider. Its divisions cover digital, offset and large-format printing as well as multimedia services, making the media house a full-service print and media operation for the region. The company employs around 100 people and has been located since 1990 in Rothenburg's southern industrial estate at Erlbacher Straße 102-104.
The local section of the Fränkischer Anzeiger is, in the publisher's own words, an unchanged independent and autonomous economic and journalistic unit, a formulation that captures the paper's unusual position: a fully family-owned local newspaper cooperating with a large regional daily for its national section while keeping complete control of its local journalism and its local advertising business. The Mantelteil cooperation with the Nürnberger Nachrichten, in place since 1965, is a purely editorial arrangement that leaves the Rothenburg paper's economic independence untouched. Financial details of the family business are not publicly disclosed. The paper's address, telephone and publishing imprint are those of the ROTABENE Medienhaus in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Digital Presence
The Fränkischer Anzeiger has published an online version since February 2003, making it an early digital adopter among Germany's small local dailies. Its digital home is the nordbayern.de portal, the joint online platform of the Nürnberger Nachrichten and its partner papers, where the Rothenburg paper's local reporting appears alongside the regional and national coverage of the Nuremberg group. The portal carries continuously updated news, photo galleries and multimedia content, extending the paper's local journalism to readers on desktop and mobile devices.
The paper offers its content digitally to subscribers, with the e-paper reproducing the printed edition and the website providing breaking local news between editions. The ROTABENE Medienhaus's own multimedia division supports the digital production, reflecting the publishing house's development from a 19th-century newspaper printer into a modern media service provider. For the Rothenburg region's readers, the digital Fränkischer Anzeiger is the online companion to the printed daily: the town council decisions, the club news, the tourism developments and the event listings of the Tauber valley, available wherever the region's residents and its many friends happen to be.
