Local Ipswich News is a free weekly community newspaper serving the City of Ipswich, west of Brisbane in Queensland, published in print and online by the Local News Group. It was launched on 24 March 2021, in the gap left when News Corp Australia ended the print edition of the Queensland Times — the city's newspaper since 1859 — in its 2020 regional restructure. Its publishers announced it plainly as a paper intended to restore local news to a city that had lost its printed daily: in an editorial recorded by the Public Interest Journalism Initiative, they wrote that COVID "was a blow to millions of Australians who lost their local paper" and that Local Ipswich News would fill that gap. The paper has published weekly ever since, in dated weekly editions spanning the whole city, and it remains current: a full edition for 8–14 January 2026 was published in digital replica form, its Facebook page was carrying its council reporting through 2026, and the title appears in the Australian Press Council's September 2026 list of constituent publications. It styles itself "Ipswich's #1 read Newspaper" — the paper's own description of itself, presented here as its claim rather than as an audited ranking.
Ipswich is one of Queensland's oldest cities and had one of its oldest newspapers: the Queensland Times, founded in 1859, was for generations the city's daily record. News Corp's 2020 decision to end print production at most of its regional titles left the Times as a digital-only publication and Ipswich without a printed local paper. Local Ipswich News was the local response. The Public Interest Journalism Initiative's Australian Newsroom Mapping Project recorded its launch, as a free community newspaper, on 24 March 2021. In July 2022 the paper's publisher strengthened its editorial leadership: Peter Chapman, an award-winning Queensland journalist who had edited the Queensland Times for two years before resigning in 2018 to run his own media consultancy, joined the Local News group to lead major design and editorial changes across its publications. By its second anniversary in March 2023 the paper was marking its survival in verse in its editor's column, thanking the local advertisers whose support "keep[s] the press rolling" and the contributors whose columns filled its pages, and recording that its print run had grown to 15,000 copies a week. The group around it grew too: the same publisher, recorded by PIJI as The Trustee for Local News Group Australia, opened the Redland City News — now the Redland Bayside News — in May 2023, and publishes sister titles including the Ipswich Local Magazine and the Logan Local.
Local Ipswich News is a general community weekly whose centre of gravity is Ipswich City Council and the everyday life of the suburbs around it. Its council coverage is assertive in the community-paper tradition: in 2026 its social media coverage was following, in detail and with evident scepticism, a dispute between Mayor Teresa Harding and Councillor Paul Tully over a proposal to have ratepayer-funded council communications staff prepare and distribute councillors' personal media statements — the kind of granular local-government scrutiny the paper promised at its launch, when it told readers that while they had Local Ipswich News they would have "a paper that will give you the facts" before they voted. Around that core it carries community events and what's-on coverage — the January 2026 edition led its forward planning with the Bull-O-Rama bull-riding night and the Twilight Carnival at the Ipswich Showgrounds — local sport, schools and community-group news, motoring writing by contributor David Reid, opinion columns from regular contributors including John Wilson and Sloan Wilkins, and a substantial business directory and trades advertising section that is the commercial engine of the free-weekly model. Its pages mix this staff and contributor material in a tabloid weekly format, with each edition dated across the week it serves, from Wednesday to Tuesday in the editions sighted.
The paper's audience is the City of Ipswich, a local government area of 229,208 people at the 2021 census and one of the fastest-growing cities in Queensland, about 40 kilometres south-west of the Brisbane CBD. Its distribution is the classic free community newspaper model: the publisher's own advertising material states that 15,000 copies are printed weekly, and invites directory advertisers to put their business cards before "30,000 potential customers" — both figures are the paper's own, published in its editions of March 2023 and April–May 2025 respectively, and are presented here on that basis rather than as audited circulation. Pickup-location guides are promoted in the paper itself, with a scannable code in its editions directing readers to where copies can be collected, and the full paper is posted online in digital replica form for readers who prefer to read it on a screen. In a city whose population is projected to keep growing steeply, and whose other local titles divide between a digital-only legacy daily and a paid weekly competitor, Local Ipswich News occupies the free, letterbox-and-pickup-point end of the market.
The paper's website is localipswichnews.com.au, the address printed at the foot of its pages. Its most visible digital channel is its replica-edition program: complete printed editions are posted to the FlipHTML5 platform under the account of its publisher David Johnston, with editions sighted there spanning July 2022, March and April 2023, April and May 2025 and January 2026 — a continuous public archive of the printed paper. The paper also maintains an active Facebook presence under its own name, where its council reporting and community posts were being published through 2026, including detailed coverage of Ipswich City Council committee disputes in that year. Its formal standing in the industry's registers matches that activity: Local Ipswich News is listed in the Australian Press Council's September 2026 constituent-bodies list, among the Queensland publications of Country Press Australia members, and its launch and publisher are recorded in the Public Interest Journalism Initiative's national news database.
Local Ipswich News is published by the Local News Group, recorded in the Public Interest Journalism Initiative's reporting as The Trustee for Local News Group Australia. The group's principal is David Johnston, who is named in the paper's own advertising material as the Local News Group contact for advertisers (on 0418 125 548, a number that also appears in independent directory listings for the paper) and under whose account the paper's digital editions are published. The masthead of the 8–14 January 2026 edition names Andrew Jefferson as group editor, Rowan Anderson as the paper's Ipswich journalist, Paul Stuart as designer, and advertising staff including Kim Draper, Gail Fowler and Sandra King, with John Wilson and Sloan Wilkins among its contributors. Editorial leadership of the group was strengthened in July 2022 when former Queensland Times editor Peter Chapman joined to lead its design and editorial direction. The group is an independent Queensland community publisher — it is not part of News Corp Australia, Australian Community Media or the Today News Group — and its other publications include the Ipswich Local Magazine, the Logan Local and the Redland Bayside News south-east of Brisbane.
Local Ipswich News is published weekly and distributed free across Ipswich, with pickup locations promoted in each edition, and is available online at localipswichnews.com.au, where readers can also find its digital replica editions and social media links. Its publisher is the Local News Group; the contact number published for the group in the paper's own advertising material and in directory listings is 0418 125 548. Readers and advertisers should confirm current contact details, pickup locations and advertising deadlines against the paper's current edition or website, as the arrangements of small independent publishers change over time.
