About Infocielo

Infocielo

Infocielo is a digital news portal based in La Plata, the capital of Buenos Aires Province in Argentina. It publishes in Spanish and defines itself, in its own long-standing slogan, as the news portal of the Province of Buenos Aires. That provincial identity is the core of the outlet: rather than competing head-on with the national media concentrated in the City of Buenos Aires, Infocielo built its position around the politics, public life and everyday news of the province's capital city and of the more than one hundred municipalities that make up Argentina's most populous province. It operates online only, with its own newsroom in La Plata, and it is regularly cited in reference listings of the city's media as one of La Plata's principal news agencies, alongside other local digital titles.

Origins and the Grupo Cielo

According to research on La Plata's digital media published by the National University of La Plata, the Infocielo portal was created in 2002 by media businessman Guillermo Montes. Montes directs the media group behind the portal, known as Grupo Cielo. The group's best-known other property is FM Cielo 103.5, described in that research as one of the audience-leading radio stations in La Plata, and the group also developed Cielosports, a sports information portal covering the city's intense football culture. Over the years the group held additional radio signals, including Estación Marina 101.9 in Pinamar, a Cielo frequency in San Bernardo and a station in Bariloche, and it operated the television channel QM Noticias from 2010, a provincial news channel that at its peak employed close to one hundred people, according to the university study.

The portal's legal and editorial identification, published on its own site, names Cielo Platense SRL as its publisher, with an address at Avenida 532 689 in La Plata, Guillermo Raúl Montes as responsible director and Martín Manuel Montes as executive director. That continuity of family ownership and management is a defining feature of the outlet: Infocielo is not the digital arm of a national conglomerate but a locally owned operation whose growth has tracked the growth of La Plata's own digital media market.

La Plata and the provincial brief

Understanding Infocielo requires understanding La Plata itself. The city was founded in 1882 as a planned provincial capital, laid out on a famous grid of avenues and diagonals, and it concentrates the institutions that govern Buenos Aires Province: the provincial governorship, the provincial legislature, the provincial courts and the ministries that administer services for a province of more than seventeen million people. It is also a major university city, home to the National University of La Plata, one of Argentina's largest public universities, and to two historic football clubs, Estudiantes and Gimnasia y Esgrima, whose rivalry shapes much of the city's sporting conversation.

For a news organisation based a short distance from the provincial government house and legislature, provincial politics is the natural centre of gravity. Infocielo's coverage follows the provincial executive, the Buenos Aires provincial legislature, provincial ministries such as health, security and education, and the municipal governments of the province's districts. Its reporting routinely deals with provincial salary negotiations with teachers and state workers, provincial health policy, policing and security in the greater Buenos Aires suburbs, infrastructure works and the electoral politics of the province, which because of its size is decisive in Argentine national elections.

Editorial coverage and sections

Beyond its political core, Infocielo publishes a broad general-news service. Its coverage includes La Plata city news, from municipal decisions and urban works to neighbourhood stories; provincial news from across Buenos Aires Province; national politics and economy insofar as they affect the province; police and courts reporting; and an extensive sports operation, closely tied to the Cielosports brand, covering Estudiantes, Gimnasia and Argentine football more generally. Culture, entertainment and service information, including weather for La Plata and the province, complete the daily offering.

The portal's sports coverage illustrates its local rootedness. Students and Gimnasia matches, transfer news and club politics are followed in the detail that only a newsroom in the same city can sustain, and interviews with local cultural and sporting figures form a regular part of its output. At the same time, stories such as the anniversary coverage of the collapse of the Dubrovnik hotel in the coastal resort of Villa Gesell show the portal reporting across the province's Atlantic coast municipalities, well beyond the capital itself.

Newsroom and audience

The National University of La Plata study of La Plata's digital media, published in the journal Actas de Periodismo y Comunicación in 2020, described Infocielo's newsroom as comprising around fifteen workers, including daily and weekend writers, editors, directors and social media staff. The same study reported audience figures of around 200,000 page views per day and more than six million visits per month at the time of the research. Those figures placed the portal well behind the digital edition of El Día, La Plata's historic newspaper, in raw audience, but the researchers nevertheless concluded that Infocielo occupied a genuine position of media and political power in local society, built over years of continuous publication.

That academic assessment is significant because it was based on case-study analysis of the city's three leading portals — the digital edition of El Día, Infocielo and another local digital title — examining their role in political communication in La Plata. The study noted that Infocielo had constructed its influence through its regional identity, presenting itself as the voice of the province rather than merely of one city, and through sustained relationships with the political, social, business, union, church and university actors of the provincial capital.

Place in La Plata's media ecosystem

La Plata supports an unusually dense cluster of digital political media for a city of its size, a consequence of its status as provincial capital. Infocielo sits within that cluster alongside titles such as Letra P, Real Politik and Código Baires, each specialising to a different degree in provincial and municipal politics. Reference listings of La Plata's media, including the media section of the city's encyclopaedia entries, name Infocielo among the city's principal news agencies. National outlets and provincial media across Buenos Aires Province regularly cite or reproduce its reporting, and its stories are syndicated through news aggregation services covering Argentine media.

The portal's longevity matters in that ecosystem. Having been founded in 2002, in the early years of Argentine online journalism and in the aftermath of the country's 2001 crisis, Infocielo belongs to the first generation of provincial digital natives that survived the transition from dial-up-era portals to the mobile and social media era. Its survival has depended on the same assets identified by researchers: a clear territorial identity, a recognisable brand shared with its sister radio station, and a newsroom focused on the provincial power centre that national media cover only intermittently.

Relationship with Grupo Cielo's other media

Infocielo does not operate in isolation. As part of Grupo Cielo it shares a brand, an audience and a commercial operation with FM Cielo 103.5, whose presenters and programmes are promoted through the portal, and with Cielosports, which extends the group's reach into sports journalism. The history of QM Noticias, the group's provincial television venture, shows both the ambition and the limits of that multimedia strategy: the channel built a substantial newsroom and provincial reach but could not secure a place on the main analogue cable grid in the province, a reminder of the distribution power held by large cable operators in Argentina. The portal, by contrast, faced no gatekeeper of that kind, which helps explain why the web operation became the group's most durable asset.

How the portal works today

Infocielo publishes continuously, with news updates throughout the day on its homepage and sections, and with a strong presence in search and social distribution. Its edition numbering, published in its legal notice, had passed eight thousand editions by the mid-2020s, reflecting more than two decades of daily publication. The outlet covers breaking provincial news, publishes interviews and background pieces, and maintains the service journalism — weather, traffic, public services — expected of a metropolitan portal.

Its editorial centre of gravity remains recognisably the same as the one described by university researchers: the province of Buenos Aires, governed from La Plata, reported from La Plata. For readers in the provincial capital and across the province's municipalities, Infocielo functions as a specialist layer between the municipal press and the national media of the capital city — close enough to provincial power to report it in detail, and provincial enough in identity to make that reporting its defining franchise.

Significance

Infocielo's significance lies less in national reach than in what it demonstrates about Argentine regional journalism. It shows that a locally owned digital portal, founded in the early 2000s and anchored in a provincial capital, could build a durable position of influence without a print edition, a television licence of its own or national conglomerate backing. Academic research treats it as one of the three case studies needed to understand digital political communication in La Plata, and its peers and reference works treat it as one of the city's principal news agencies. In a media system as centralised as Argentina's, that sustained provincial presence is the outlet's central fact.
