About Milton Today
Milton Today
Overview
Milton Today is the online news outlet Village Media operates for Milton, Ontario, a Halton Region town whose 132,979 residents at the 2021 census made it one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada. Publishing at miltontoday.ca since April 2024, the site provides staff-reported coverage of Milton town council and Halton Region, development and growth, schools, health care, sports and community life, together with obituaries, events listings and the provincial and national material carried across the Village Media network. It arrived months after the print edition of the town's long-running newspaper ended, and it remains Milton's dedicated digital-first local newsroom.
History
Milton's printed newspaper for generations was the Milton Canadian Champion, a Metroland Media title. When Metroland restructured in September 2023, the Champion's print edition ended and its coverage was folded into the regional InsideHalton.com website, leaving a town of well over 130,000 people without a newsroom of its own. Village Media had already signalled interest in the market — industry coverage in February 2023 reported the company's plan to add sites in Milton and Oshawa — and it moved in the spring of 2024. News Media Canada recorded the launch on 11 April 2024: "Village Media is excited to announce the launch of MiltonToday.ca, a brand new community news website in Halton Region," calling it the company's 24th owned-and-operated local news outlet in Ontario.
MiltonToday also completed a deliberate Halton Region build-out for the company: Village Media had launched BurlingtonToday and HaltonHillsToday in 2022 and acquired the independent Oakville News in February 2024, so the Milton launch two months later gave the network a staffed outlet in each of Halton's four municipalities.
The launch team was built around local credibility. Editor Steve LeBlanc is a longtime Milton resident with decades of experience in community journalism, best known for his sports reporting, and was inducted into the Milton Sports Hall of Fame in 2022; he was joined by reporter Bambang Sadewo, who had covered Milton closely for the previous five years. The company marked the debut with a community gathering at Coffee Culture Cafe in Milton, photographed in Village Media's April 2024 bulletin alongside reader meet-and-greets held with the sister site Oakville News. The Inside the Village podcast likewise presented MiltonToday to the network that year as its newest addition.
Content and Coverage
MiltonToday's reporting follows the pressures and pleasures of an exceptionally fast-growing town: council decisions on development charges, intensification and traffic, Halton Region services, the town's expanding school system under the Halton District and Halton Catholic boards, and Milton District Hospital. Its sports coverage reflects its editor's background, spanning minor hockey and lacrosse to the Mattamy National Cycling Centre velodrome, a legacy of the 2015 Pan American Games. The site is visibly active in the current municipal cycle: coverage of Milton's 2026 mayoral race, including candidates' public call for a clean campaign, was syndicated by news aggregators in October 2026. As on other Village Media sites, staff stories sit alongside Community Leaders Program partnership features, a substantial obituaries section, a community events calendar and Village Report provincial and national stories. The site maintains a strong presence at town rituals — its sponsorships include the Milton Fall Fair at the Milton Fair Grounds, support for the Milton Community Resource Centre and a Santa event each November — and it contributes to the network's Village Reporters youth initiative, which brought student reporters from dozens of Halton-area schools into local newsrooms in 2024 and grew to 150 student journalists from more than 60 Halton schools by October 2025.
Audience and Reach
Milton's audience is defined by growth: the town counted 31,471 people in 2001, had already more than doubled to 84,362 by 2011, and reached 110,128 in 2016 and 132,979 in 2021, a 20.7 percent rise in five years, with a median age of just 36, a median household income of $126,000 in the 2021 census and a large commuter population travelling Highway 401 and the Milton GO line toward Toronto. Despite a population larger than many Ontario cities, Milton remains legally a town, and its 363-square-kilometre area still takes in farmland, the Niagara Escarpment and conservation areas such as Crawford Lake and Rattlesnake Point, which feed the site's events, outdoors and lifestyle coverage alongside its growth-dominated news agenda. MiltonToday serves that population alongside readers in the wider Halton area shared with Village Media's Oakville News, BurlingtonToday and HaltonHillsToday. The company publishes no independently verified audience figure for the Milton site itself; its network-level claims — more than five million monthly readers, more than 450,000 daily newsletters and 33 publications in its own 2026 industry profile, and roughly 40 million monthly page views in its chief executive's 2023 estimate — describe Village Media as a whole and are attributed here to the company, not treated as MiltonToday's measured readership.
Digital Presence
MiltonToday is an online-only publication built on Village Media's Villager platform, the Sault Ste. Marie-developed publishing system licensed to hundreds of other publishers, and it reaches readers through a free daily email newsletter, the network's mobile apps launched in February 2023, its social media channels and Spaces, the company's localized social networking platform rolled out from 2024. Readers receive the standard Village Media package of local headlines, obituaries and events mixed with Village Report wire stories, and the site takes part in network programming such as the Inside the Village podcast and the annual holiday charity auctions run across Village Media communities.
Ownership and Organisation
MiltonToday is owned by Village Media Inc., headquartered at 298 Queen Street East in Sault Ste. Marie. The company's roots are in SooToday, which Dick Peplow started in 2000 as a local shopping directory before it developed into a hyperlocal news site; Jeff Elgie, initially a minority investor, became chief executive after Peplow's death in 2007 and took majority ownership in 2012, and Village Media was established under that name in 2013. Its expansion strategy — planting digital newsrooms in mid-sized Ontario communities, frequently in the wake of a legacy newspaper's closure — has produced more than 30 publications, including The Trillium for provincial politics, and the company announced a Knight Foundation partnership in 2026 to carry the model into the United States. In Milton, the newsroom launched under editor Steve LeBlanc and reporter Bambang Sadewo, both appointed in April 2024; because staff arrangements can change, that masthead is presented as the documented launch team. The site is free to readers and supported by advertising, sponsorships of events such as the Milton Fall Fair and the Milton District Hospital Foundation's annual golf classic, and Community Leaders Program partnerships. In September 2025 the company's bulletin recorded MiltonToday among the sponsors of the Milton District Hospital Foundation's 25th Annual Classic Golf Tournament, one of the hospital foundation's signature fundraisers, reflecting the health beat's civic as well as news role in the town.
