About Rogers TV Durham Region
Rogers TV Durham Region
Overview
Rogers TV Durham Region is the community cable television channel serving Durham Region, Ontario, east of Toronto, carried for Rogers cable subscribers principally on channel 10 — and on channel 63 in parts of the region — with an HD feed on channel 510. Based in Oshawa, the region's largest city, it is a distinct local station within Rogers TV, the network of English-language community channels owned by Rogers Communications: it has its own channel positions, its own production operation and its own section of the Rogers TV website at rogerstv.com/durham-region. It is not a relay of the Ottawa anchor channel or of any Toronto station, and it is not available over the air or from competing television providers. Like its sister stations, it mixes programming produced in-house by Rogers staff with access programming proposed and made by community members, volunteers and local organizations. Its flagship content is sport: the channel is the long-standing television home of the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League, whose games it produces locally from the Tribute Communities Centre in downtown Oshawa. Around the hockey, the schedule carries the civic and community material typical of the Rogers TV model — candidates' debates, public meetings, local talk and community events coverage for the municipalities of Durham Region, including Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and Clarington.
History
The Durham channel operates within the Rogers cable system that serves the eastern Greater Toronto Area. When the CRTC renewed Rogers' Ontario cable licences in Broadcasting Decision 2007-230, Oshawa was listed among the authorized service areas of Rogers' Class 1 regional broadcasting distribution licence, and Rogers' Durham Region community programming developed as part of that system. The station took its modern form with the rest of the network: the present Rogers TV structure dates to 2000, when Rogers and Shaw Communications swapped cable systems to consolidate their regional footprints, and in April 2008 the channels were rebranded from Rogers Television to Rogers TV, followed by a relaunch with a new logo and on-air presentation on 1 September 2016.
The defining moment in the Durham station's modern history came in 2017. After the CRTC's 2016 community television policy allowed providers in metropolitan markets of a million or more people that also own broadcast stations to redirect community-channel funding into local news, Rogers closed its community stations in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Richmond Hill. Durham Region, although part of the Greater Toronto Area, was treated differently: as Playback and Media in Canada reported in May 2017, Rogers said it would continue to operate 35 stations in small and medium-sized communities across Ontario and Atlantic Canada, "including Durham Region and Newmarket." Local coverage in the DurhamRegion.com news service was headlined "Rogers TV Durham stays on-air but staff cut," recording that eight full-time staff positions at the Durham station were eliminated in the restructuring while the channel itself remained on the air. The Generals broadcasts — by then the station's signature production — continued, and in the years since, the club's game previews have continued to direct Durham viewers to Rogers TV, including a preview published on 25 October 2025 advising fans to "watch on Rogers TV and FloHockey."
Programming and Content
Hockey is the centre of the Durham schedule. Rogers TV Durham has carried Oshawa Generals games for many years: for the 2010–11 season, the club announced that Rogers TV Durham would broadcast 64 Generals games, including all 34 home games, with a Friday-night pre-game program, Sportszone, offering interviews and features with players and coaches. The channel carried the Generals' run to the 2015 OHL championship, when the league noted that viewers in Durham Region could watch the final-series games from Erie on cable 10, 63 and HD 510. Generals broadcasts are produced in Oshawa with a dedicated local crew; the play-by-play voice most associated with them is Mike Luck, who called his 500th OHL game in 2019 and whom the OHL described in 2022 as "recognized as the play-by-play announcer for the Generals on Rogers tv Durham," noting he had then spent 15 seasons calling the club's games even as he began taking NHL assignments on Sportsnet. The Ontario Hockey League's 2025–26 season preview of the Generals again credited a Rogers TV broadcast team — Mike Luck on play-by-play, Shane Hollinshead as colour commentator and Adam Dunfee as host — confirming the local production remained in place for the current era.
Beyond hockey, the channel performs the civic functions of a community station. In May 2022 the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce identified Rogers TV Durham as its broadcast partner for its provincial candidates' debate, with the recording aired on the channel on 22 May 2022. A 2021 account by an Oshawa city councillor noted that an hour-long virtual public meeting on the planned Metrolinx GO train expansion east to Bowmanville would be played on Rogers TV local programming at various times in the following weeks. As at other Rogers TV stations, residents and community groups can apply to develop access programs, with proposals assessed by station staff on production capability, community involvement and uniqueness, and the schedule is rounded out by community events, municipal coverage and network programs shared with other Rogers TV stations.
Audience and Reach
Rogers TV Durham Region is available only to Rogers cable subscribers in Durham Region, on channels 10 and 63 with the HD feed on 510; it cannot be received over the air and is not carried by other providers. Its audience is the population of Durham Region's lakeshore municipalities and townships, and its Generals telecasts also reach hockey fans across Ontario through the Super Sports Pak and streaming: Generals games televised by the channel are simultaneously carried on the OHL's streaming platform, currently FloHockey (previously OHL Live/CHL TV). Rogers does not publish ratings for its individual community channels, and no Durham-specific viewing figures are released. Network-wide, Rogers has described Rogers TV as available to the company's more than 2.3 million cable customers in Ontario, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador — a figure published in Rogers' own programming releases for the network as a whole, not a measurement of the Durham audience.
Digital Presence
The channel's digital home is its Durham Region section of rogerstv.com, which publishes its local show pages and listings under the same structure as the other Rogers TV stations; the Oshawa operation has also been listed at 301 Marwood Drive in Oshawa in business directories quoting the Rogers TV site. Some Rogers TV programming is available through Rogers On Demand, and video of events such as the 2022 Oshawa Chamber candidates' debate was also posted to YouTube for non-subscribers. Because rogerstv.com is blocked to automated research tools, the fine detail of the channel's current streamed offerings and any Durham-specific social accounts should be re-verified against the live site at publish time; the channel's continuing operation is independently documented in the club and press sources described in this profile.
Ownership and Organisation
Rogers TV Durham Region is owned and operated by Rogers Communications through its cable division, as part of the Rogers TV network; its French-language counterpart network is TV Rogers. Community channels operate within a CRTC framework that requires cable companies to devote a portion of subscription revenue to community programming that reflects the local community, the regulatory basis for stations like Durham's. Locally the station works with a small professional staff — reduced by the eight full-time positions cut in 2017 — supplemented by volunteers and community partners, the model Rogers applies across the network. Its best-documented local production unit is the Generals broadcast crew, which has been led on air by play-by-play announcer Mike Luck, colour commentator Shane Hollinshead and host Adam Dunfee in the 2025–26 season preview's credits.
Contact and Availability
Rogers TV Durham Region is found on Rogers cable channels 10 and 63 (HD 510) in Durham Region, Ontario, as part of the basic cable service; it is not available from other providers. Program listings, show information and information about volunteering or proposing a program are published through the channel's section of the Rogers TV website, rogerstv.com/durham-region. Community members interested in access programming apply through Rogers TV, which reviews community show applications at the individual station level.
