About Shellbrook Chronicle

Shellbrook Chronicle

Overview

The Shellbrook Chronicle is a weekly community newspaper published in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan, a town in the province's parkland belt northwest of Prince Albert. It is produced from an office at 46 Main Street in Shellbrook, which it shares with its sister paper, the Spiritwood Herald: the June 2025 Saskatchewan Media Directory, compiled by Benchmark PR, carries the two titles as a single combined listing, "The Shellbrook Chronicle & Spiritwood Herald," under the one Shellbrook address and telephone number. The Chronicle's own printed masthead describes a Friday morning paper serving Shellbrook and ten surrounding communities — Canwood, Debden, Big River, Parkside, Leask, Marcelin, Blaine Lake, Holbein, Mont Nebo and Mayview. The provincial directory summarises its content as local news, sports, agriculture and school reports, and health news for the Shellbrook area. The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan's library continues to list the Chronicle and Herald among the province's current weekly newspapers, and the June 2025 directory entry names a serving news contact, confirming the paper in operation into the mid-2020s.

History

The Chronicle is one of Saskatchewan's long-lived small-town newspapers. It was already publishing in 1912: local histories of Shellbrook quote the paper's reporting of 14 September 1912 on a fatal shooting accident involving the wife of the town's hotel proprietor, and its coverage of the nearby Blaine Lake prohibition vote in December 1913. Surviving early issues, including one dated 20 January 1922, are held in commercial newspaper archives, and an issue of 27 April 1938 carries the volume number XXV, a numbering sequence reaching back more than a century. The Saskatchewan Historic Newspapers Online collection, maintained through the University of Saskatchewan, holds several hundred Shellbrook issues for the province's wartime-era selection, and the paper is among the Saskatchewan titles included in the Canada Newspaper Archives database used by Canadian libraries. For much of its documented modern history the Chronicle has been published under the imprint of Pepperfram Limited Publications, with C. J. Pepper named as publisher on its mastheads and in the 2023 Saskatchewan Media Directory. That Pepper family imprint, rather than a national chain brand, is the identity the paper has carried through its recent decades.

Programming and Content

The Chronicle is a conventional prairie weekly built around the institutions of its district. The Saskatchewan Media Directory describes its pages as carrying local news, sports, agriculture and school reports, and health news for the Shellbrook area. Town and rural-municipality council business, RCMP and court items, school activities in Shellbrook and the surrounding villages, minor and senior hockey, and farm reporting — crop conditions, commodity concerns and the business of a district where agriculture is the economic base — form the core of the paper. Its printed pages also carry the record-keeping functions of a community weekly: obituaries, birthdays and anniversaries, classified advertising, a business directory and a community calendar of coming events, which the paper promotes to local non-profit groups. Letters to the editor are a standing feature; the paper's published letters policy asks that letters be signed with the writer's contact information and notes that they may be edited for length. The paper has also used its pages to promote the calendar itself, offering community organisations free calendar listings for two weeks before an event when they book a small display advertisement. Community correspondents and submitted material fill out the coverage of the smaller centres in its territory, from Canwood and Debden to Big River and Blaine Lake, places too small to support papers of their own. The result is a paper whose value lies less in any single story than in the cumulative weekly record of a farming district of north-central Saskatchewan.

Audience and Reach

The Chronicle's footprint is the town of Shellbrook and the farming district around it, a territory its masthead defines as eleven communities in the Rural Municipalities of Shellbrook and Canwood and their neighbouring municipalities. It is a paid weekly sold by subscription and single copy. AdCanada's 2019 network figures, published through the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association, listed the Chronicle's footprint circulation at 3,998 copies — a dated industry figure rather than a current audit, but an indication of the paper's scale in a district whose largest centre, Shellbrook itself, has a population of roughly 1,500. Readership extends across the parkland farm country between Prince Albert and North Battleford, and the paper is also followed by former residents keeping ties to the district. Media-monitoring databases such as Prowly list the combined Chronicle and Herald among Saskatchewan's local news outlets, reflecting the pair's role as the news source of record for their corner of the province.

Digital Presence

The Chronicle publishes online at shellbrookchronicle.com, the address printed on its masthead and carried in the provincial media directory, which lists the Chronicle and Herald sites together as the operation's web addresses. The June 2025 directory gives the paper's news contact an address on the SaskToday platform — amcgonigle@sasktoday.ca — alongside the newsroom's own editorial address, an arrangement shared by a number of Saskatchewan weeklies whose stories also appear through the provincial SaskToday service. The Chronicle's print archive has a substantial digital afterlife of a different kind: more than 5,400 historical issues are searchable through the NewspaperArchive service, according to that service's own description of its Shellbrook holdings, and wartime-era issues are available free through the Saskatchewan Historic Newspapers Online project, making the paper a standard genealogical and local-history source for the district.

Ownership and Organisation

The Chronicle and the Spiritwood Herald are a single publishing operation run from 46 Main Street in Shellbrook. The papers' printed mastheads identify them as a division of Pepperfram Limited Publications, under publisher C. J. Pepper, and the 2023 Saskatchewan Media Directory likewise names Pepper as the Chronicle's publisher. No acquisition of the papers by a national or regional chain is recorded in the directories and association sources consulted for this profile; the operation presents as a small, locally based publisher, and the June 2025 directory continues to list it under its own name and address with its own staff contacts. Mastheads from the paper's issues show a compact newsroom typical of a prairie weekly: a reporter (Jordan Twiss in the issues examined), advertising sales handled by Madeleine Wrigley, composition and pagination by Kathleen Nording and Patt Ganton, and bookkeeping and reception by Cheryl Mason. By June 2025 the directory's named news contact was Azure McGonigle. The paper is a member paper of the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association, the provincial body founded in 1919; Chronicle reporter Jordan Twiss appeared among the finalists in the association's 2020 awards list. As with other Saskatchewan weeklies, the Chronicle also functions as an advertising vehicle for the district and a publisher of municipal and public notices for the town and surrounding rural municipalities.
