About The Lockyer and Somerset Independent

The Lockyer and Somerset Independent

Overview

The Lockyer and Somerset Independent is an independent weekly newspaper based in Gatton, Queensland, covering the Lockyer Valley and the Somerset (Brisbane Valley) region west of Brisbane. From its base in Gatton it reports on the towns and rural districts of the Lockyer Valley — Gatton and Laidley among them — the Somerset townships around Esk, and the western townships of the Ipswich City Council area, describing itself as the leading local newspaper for the Gatton, Lockyer and Brisbane Valley districts. The paper was founded in 2020, when local business owners joined forces to launch a new, completely independent publication after News Corp Australia ended the print edition of the district's previous newspaper, the Gatton Star.

The Independent is now published by Ipswich Media Pty Ltd, part of the Today News Group (Star News Group) of regional publishers. It is registered as a newspaper masthead on the Australian Communications and Media Authority's Register of Eligible News Businesses under Ipswich Media (registration dated 6 January 2026), and it is listed in the Australian Press Council's register of constituent publications dated September 2026.

History

The Independent's founding was a direct response to the contraction of corporate regional publishing in 2020. In May of that year News Corp Australia announced a sweeping restructure of its regional and community newspapers; the Gatton, Lockyer and Brisbane Valley Star was among the Queensland titles whose print editions ended, becoming digital-only services. According to the case study published by its advertising-systems supplier Atex, when News Corp's publication The Star ceased in June 2020, local business owners joined forces to invest in a new, completely independent publication — and The Lockyer and Somerset Independent was born. The Atex account describes the venture as a management buyout from News Corp, and records the practical challenge of starting a weekly newspaper and a monthly real estate guide from the ground up, initially with bookings and layout managed in spreadsheets and word-processing files before the paper adopted a dedicated advertising booking and planning system.

The paper's first registered publisher was Valetta Media Pty Ltd, which held the title's registration on the ACMA Register of Eligible News Businesses from 31 May 2022. Ownership then changed as the Today News Group expanded west of Brisbane: the Public Interest Journalism Initiative's Australian News Data Report records the Independent linked to Ipswich Media Pty Ltd from March 2024, and trade reporting by GXpress describes the group as having purchased the Lockyer and Somerset Independent among the long-standing independent newspapers it brought into its stable. Valetta Media's registration was removed from the ACMA register on 2 October 2025, and the register now records the masthead under Ipswich Media Pty Ltd (ABN 39 648 050 177). The paper thus began the decade as a locally owned start-up and is now part of one of Australia's largest independent regional publishing groups, while continuing to publish under its own nameplate from Gatton.

Programming and Content

The Independent is a general-interest rural weekly whose stock-in-trade is the civic, agricultural and community life of two farming valleys. Its pages carry Lockyer Valley Regional Council and Somerset Regional Council news, court and emergency-services reporting, rural and agricultural industry coverage for one of Australia's most fertile food-growing regions, school news, sport, property, entertainment and retail information. The paper also publishes a monthly real estate guide alongside the weekly newspaper.

The range of its recent reporting can be traced through the outlets that cite it. In August 2025 it reported on Lockyer District High School students' success at the Ekka, Brisbane's annual agricultural show — coverage the school reproduced in its newsletter, telling parents the article of 21 August 2025 was "a great read". In September 2024 it covered the University of Queensland's Gatton campus commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the departure of the United States Army hospitals that occupied the campus during the Second World War. In 2026 its reporting on Lockyer Valley Regional Council's decision to temporarily close part of the William Kemp RV Park in Gatton — creating a buffer zone near the Gatton kindergarten — was cited in national news podcast coverage. As a member publication of the Australian Press Council, the newspaper is bound by the Council's Standards of Practice.

Audience and Reach

The Independent's home town, Gatton, recorded 7,851 residents at the 2021 census and is the administrative centre of the Lockyer Valley Region, which held 41,101 people at the same census; across the range, the Somerset Region adds the Brisbane Valley townships around Esk, Kilcoy and Toogoolawah to the paper's territory. The district the paper serves is one of Australia's wealthiest and most fertile agricultural regions — the Lockyer Valley is a major vegetable-growing area sometimes described as Australia's salad bowl — and its readers are the farming families, agribusinesses, service towns and commuters of the two valleys.

The newspaper's own positioning, reported by Atex at its founding, is that it is read by 64 per cent of residents in its core area and is the primary source of news, sport, property, entertainment and retail information in Gatton and its surrounding communities; that figure is the publisher's claim, presented as such, and no audited circulation for the title has been published. What can be verified independently is the paper's institutional standing: it is the masthead of record for its district on the ACMA register of eligible news businesses, a constituent publication of the Australian Press Council in the September 2026 register, and a continuing source for council, school and university reporting across its two valleys.

Digital Presence

The Independent publishes online at tlsindependent.com.au, the content link recorded for the masthead on the ACMA register, and its editions have been published in digital replica form through Issuu — the ACMA register's earlier entry for the title pointed readers to the paper's Issuu page. Like the other titles in the Ipswich Media stable, it sits within the Today News Group's network of Queensland newspaper websites, through which its local reporting reaches readers beyond the print distribution area. Its work is also picked up and cited by other outlets — school and university publications in its district reproduce and credit its articles, and its council reporting has been referenced in national news coverage — extending the reach of a small rural weekly well beyond the valleys it serves.

Ownership and Organisation

The Lockyer and Somerset Independent is published by Ipswich Media Pty Ltd, the south-east Queensland arm of the Today News Group, the regional publishing group associated with Star News Group and led by fourth-generation newspaperman Paul Thomas and his publishing partner Damian Morgan. Ipswich Media's stable, as recorded on the ACMA register in January 2026, comprises six newspaper mastheads: Ipswich News Today, The Lockyer and Somerset Independent, the Beaudesert Times, the Fassifern Guardian, the Ipswich Tribune and the Moreton Border News. The register names Paul Thomas as the contact for the business, at paul.thomas@starnewsgroup.com.au.

The Independent began as a genuinely local venture — founded and funded by Lockyer Valley business owners in 2020 under Valetta Media — and its acquisition by Ipswich Media, recorded by the Public Interest Journalism Initiative from March 2024, placed it inside a group that has grown rapidly by launching and buying independent regional titles. Trade reporting on the group's December 2025 purchase of the neighbouring Fassifern Guardian, Moreton Border News and Ipswich Tribune from the Creighton family noted that Ipswich Media already owned the Lockyer and Somerset Independent among its nearby titles, and the group has committed publicly to continuing strong public-interest journalism in the communities its papers serve. Day to day, the paper is produced by its Gatton-based team covering the Lockyer and Somerset districts, within the shared production and advertising systems of the wider group.

Contact and Availability

The Lockyer and Somerset Independent is published weekly in print for the Lockyer Valley and Somerset regions and online at tlsindependent.com.au, where readers can find the paper's contact points for news tips, subscriptions and advertising. Its publisher, Ipswich Media Pty Ltd, is recorded on the Australian Communications and Media Authority's Register of Eligible News Businesses, with Paul Thomas listed as the contact for the business. Community organisations, schools, sporting clubs and councils across the Gatton, Laidley and Esk districts can submit news and event details to the paper for inclusion in upcoming editions.
