About The GATE
The GATE
Overview
The GATE (thegate.ca) is an independent Canadian online entertainment magazine based in Toronto, Ontario. Founded and still owned and edited by W. Andrew Powell, it covers film, television, music, travel, gaming, technology and lifestyle, with an editorial emphasis on Canadian talent and stories alongside international entertainment coverage. What began as a small zine-style project has grown into a continuously updated magazine site carrying thousands of stories: news, reviews scored out of ten, interviews with filmmakers and actors, festival coverage, travel features, gadget reviews and cocktail recipes. The GATE is accredited at major industry events including the Academy Awards, the Toronto International Film Festival and the Canadian Screen Awards, and after more than two decades it remains an owner-operated independent outlet — a rarity in an era of consolidated media. Powell describes its mission as using the power of conversation to cover the day's top entertainment stories and to elevate Canadian stories on the world stage.
History
The GATE began around 2000, when Toronto writer W. Andrew Powell started it as a zine — by his own account, a side project created because the changing media landscape was not offering the opportunities he wanted to tell entertainment, culture and lifestyle stories. In a personal retrospective, Powell recalls that when he started The GATE in 2000 "the whole enterprise was a side hustle," intended to establish himself and gain experience. Over the following two decades the site grew from a few stories a month to thousands of posts, and its interview roster came to include Hollywood figures such as Ron Howard and Taika Waititi as well as Canadian icons such as Tatiana Maslany and Ryan Gosling. In February 2022 The GATE marked more than 20 years in operation with a brand refresh — a new logo and updated site design — and launched membership and subscription options giving supporters early access to exclusive content, product discounts and advance notice of giveaways. Powell has written candidly about the economics of independent publishing, crediting his YouTube channel as the revenue that keeps the magazine going; the outlet also acknowledges the financial support of the Government of Canada.
Content and Coverage
Film and television are the magazine's core. The GATE publishes reviews — scored on a ten-point scale — interviews, previews and festival coverage, with annual reporting from the Toronto International Film Festival (including its Midnight Madness programme), Hot Docs and the Oscars. Recent coverage in the autumn of 2026 included an interview with director Cristian Mungiu and actor Sebastian Stan about their film Fjord, conversations with the cast and showrunner of the new Carrie television adaptation, and the multi-film Out of Time Reviews series by film critic Andrew Parker. Gaming and fan culture round out the entertainment mix, from games coverage to previews of fan events such as Disney's D23. Beyond the screen, the site's Travel & Lifestyle section ranges from a Halloween-season trip to Disneyland Paris to food and whisky writing; its Gadgets & Tech section reviews consumer technology such as the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P camera and the Pixel Watch 4, often supported by hands-on video; and a Cocktails section publishes recipes, many tied to its annual Holiday Gift Guide. The Holiday Gift Guides are a signature franchise, accompanied by giveaways of prizes worth, in the magazine's words, thousands of dollars. Guest writers, artists and other contributors appear alongside Powell's own reporting, photography and video work.
Audience and Reach
The GATE's audience is entertainment consumers in Canada and internationally, with the magazine noting that its stories are read around the world but "most importantly, across Canada." Its own February 2022 anniversary release reported more than 30,000 subscribers across its YouTube, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook channels combined; that figure is the outlet's own and dates from 2022, and no independently audited audience measurement is published. Readers can deepen the relationship through the membership and subscription tiers introduced in 2022, which offer early access to exclusive content, product discounts and advance notifications of giveaways, and the site runs regular reader contests, particularly around its Holiday Gift Guides. Within the industry, the outlet's standing is reflected in its accreditations: it is accredited at major events and festivals including the Academy Awards, TIFF and the Canadian Screen Awards, it is a voting member of the Television Critics Association, and Powell is a member of the Critics Choice Association. That access translates directly into the product readers see — on-the-ground festival reporting, red-carpet photography and interviews conducted at press events rather than rewritten from wire copy — and the magazine marked the 51st Toronto International Film Festival in 2026 with the same kind of programme coverage, including its Midnight Madness slate, that it has produced for many years.
Digital Presence
The GATE is a digital-native publication: thegate.ca is its only edition, updated continuously with articles, photography and video. The site is organized into sections — Film & TV, Travel & Lifestyle, Gadgets & Tech, Cocktails and a Blog — with deep archives running to thousands of posts, and it received a full brand refresh in 2022 with a new logo and design. Reviews display a prominent numeric verdict beside the headline, hands-on technology features are frequently paired with video, and seasonal promotions — from luggage giveaways to the Holiday Gift Guide contests — are run directly through the site and its social channels. Video is central to the operation: Powell's YouTube channel carries interviews, reviews and hands-on features, and by his own account it is the financial engine of the business — "without my YouTube channel, The GATE probably wouldn't exist today," he has written. The magazine also distributes through its social accounts on YouTube, X, Instagram and Facebook, and sells support directly to readers through memberships rather than relying solely on advertising. Powell additionally writes about the craft and business of independent media on his personal site, wanderpow.com.
Ownership and Organisation
The GATE is independently owned and operated by its founder, W. Andrew Powell, who serves as owner and editor-in-chief and contributes writing, photography and videography drawn from more than 25 years covering entertainment, travel and technology. It has no corporate parent and is not part of a media chain. The site is home to a roster of guest writers and regular contributors — film coverage, for example, is led in part by critic Andrew Parker, with additional reviewers such as Bryan Cairns — coordinated by Powell from Toronto. The operation acknowledges the financial support of the Government of Canada, and supplements advertising with reader memberships, subscriptions and its YouTube revenue. Powell has been frank that the enterprise remains small and personal: an independent journalism outlet sustained by its audience rather than by a large publishing organization.
