Trend Weekly (閒情報) is a free Chinese-language weekly tabloid newspaper published in Calgary, Alberta. Founded in 2001, it is the lifestyle companion to Oriental Weekly, the Chinese-language news weekly published since 1981 by the same company, Trend Media Inc. Where its sister paper carries the harder mix of community, local and government news, Trend Weekly concentrates on lifestyle coverage, consumer trends and local community stories, and it was created to speak in particular to a younger generation of Chinese-Canadian readers in Western Canada.
The newspaper appears every Thursday and is distributed free of charge through a network of authorized vendors in Calgary's Chinatown and surrounding communities. Each week's complete issue is also posted on its website, trendweekly.com, and the run of issues published there through the autumn of 2026 — including the issue dated 15 October 2026 — confirms that the paper is still publishing on its weekly cycle.
Trend Weekly is a distinct publication in its own right, not another name for Oriental Weekly: the two papers have different titles, different founding dates and different editorial remits, and they have been published side by side by Trend Media for more than two decades.
Trend Weekly was founded in 2001 by publisher Danny Chan, a veteran of Chinese-language publishing in Canada whom reference profiles describe as having more than thirty years of experience in the field. Chan's company, Trend Media Inc. of Calgary, had published Oriental Weekly since 1981, and by the turn of the century Calgary's Chinese community was large, growing and increasingly diverse in age and background. Trend Weekly was launched to serve the younger segment of that readership — readers who wanted Chinese-language coverage weighted toward lifestyle, shopping, dining, entertainment and consumer information rather than the news-led format of the established weekly.
The paper's own published history emphasizes the same positioning: Trend Media describes Trend Weekly as a free Chinese-language tabloid for Western Canada, based in Calgary, founded by Chan in 2001 to cater to the younger demographic within the Chinese community, and it highlights the paper's community support programs, including work with World Vision, as part of its history. The same published account describes the paper's later strategic focus on internet and social media access, adopted to keep its younger Chinese readership connected as reading habits moved online. Reference directories were still listing the paper, its Thursday schedule and its free distribution model a decade and a half after its founding, and business directories recorded Trend Media Inc. as its Calgary publisher. Over the years since its launch the paper has continued to publish weekly in print, and its website later became the digital home of the complete weekly issue, extending the paper's life well beyond the print racks.
As a newspaper, Trend Weekly organizes its content around the consumer and lifestyle interests of Chinese-speaking readers in Calgary. Reference descriptions of the paper identify its key contents as lifestyle news, consumer trends and local community news. In practice, an issue mixes features on restaurants, retail and local services, community announcements and events, entertainment and lifestyle stories, and advertising directed at the local Chinese-speaking market — including the coupon promotions the publisher has used as a reader incentive. Its coverage is published in Chinese, in the traditional characters used by much of Calgary's established Cantonese- and Mandarin-speaking readership.
The paper's Thursday publication day matches the rhythm of its sister title, and its content is deliberately complementary: a reader who picks up Oriental Weekly for community and government news can pick up Trend Weekly for the consumer and lifestyle side of community life. The complete issue — editorial pages and advertising together — is reproduced online each week.
Like other free ethnic weeklies, Trend Weekly is funded by advertising rather than by readers, and its pages are built to carry the businesses of the community it serves. The publisher says the paper is carried through what it describes as the largest rack and merchant distribution network for its market, and that its advertising base includes mainstream advertisers as well as Chinese-Canadian businesses — claims the company makes about its own operation. Directory and reference listings for the paper over the years have consistently recorded the same format: a free Chinese-language weekly tabloid, published in Calgary by Trend Media, appearing on Thursdays.
Trend Weekly's audience is the Chinese-speaking population of Calgary and the surrounding region, with an emphasis on younger readers. That audience is substantial: according to the Government of Alberta's analysis of the 2021 Census, Chinese residents formed the second-largest racialized group in the Calgary census metropolitan area, behind only South Asians, and immigrants made up 31.5 per cent of the metropolitan population. The newspaper's own website states that it is available at over 100 locations in Calgary throughout Chinatown and surrounding communities, and it claims a readership of over 45,000 weekly; those are the publisher's own figures, published on its About page, and no independently audited circulation or readership number is available. The paper also describes itself on the same page as the most popular Chinese publication in its community — again, a claim made by the publisher rather than a verified measurement.
The free-distribution model is central to that reach. Instead of subscriptions or newsstand sales, copies are placed where the readership already goes — Chinese supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries and community businesses — and the same complete issue is available to any reader online, extending its audience beyond Calgary to former residents and readers elsewhere in Western Canada and abroad.
Trend Weekly's digital home is trendweekly.com, a WordPress-based site whose main function is the publication of the weekly issue. The homepage is organized as a reverse-chronological archive of recent issues, each presented with a link to the complete edition. Fetching and indexing the site in October 2026 showed an unbroken weekly sequence through the summer and autumn of that year — issues dated from late July through 15 October 2026 — matching the Thursday publication schedule and providing direct evidence that the newspaper remains in current, on-schedule publication. The site also carries an About page setting out the paper's history, distribution and readership claims. Beyond the weekly issues it carries little native web-only content, functioning primarily as the digital edition of the printed paper.
Trend Weekly is owned and operated by Trend Media Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, the parent company of both Trend Weekly and Oriental Weekly. The company's two free weeklies divide the local Chinese-language market between them by content: Oriental Weekly as the news title, Trend Weekly as the lifestyle and consumer title. Danny Chan is the founder and publisher of Trend Weekly and the publisher identified in reference sources for both Trend Media newspapers. As with its sister paper, the organization is small and locally run, with editorial, advertising and distribution handled within the Calgary market.
Trend Weekly is published every Thursday in Calgary, Alberta, and is available free of charge from authorized vendors at more than 100 locations across Chinatown and surrounding communities, according to the publisher. Readers anywhere can access the complete current issue online through trendweekly.com, where each week's edition is posted alongside an archive of recent issues. The newspaper's publisher is Trend Media Inc. of Calgary, which also publishes the companion news weekly Oriental Weekly.
