About Watno Dur

Watno Dur

Overview

Watno Dur is a Punjabi television and radio network and media-events company based in Mississauga, Ontario. Its name is a Punjabi expression meaning away from one's birthplace or homeland, and that idea defines everything it produces: programming and events designed to connect Punjabis living in Canada with the language, culture, music and daily life of Punjab. The network operates from offices at 2960 Drew Road, Unit 143, in Mississauga, in the heart of one of the largest Punjabi communities outside India.

Watno Dur is best known for its long-running Punjabi television programme, which the network says began on Vision TV in 1999 and grew into one of the most-watched South Asian programmes on that channel, and for a portfolio of community activities built around the programme's audience: a weekday radio show, the large annual Teeyan Da Mela women's festival held around Mother's Day, a Punjabi music awards night, and the Miss Canada Punjaban pageant. The company is led by its founder, Sukhi Nijjar, a writer, lyricist and broadcaster originally from Jalandhar, Punjab. Business-directory listings show the network as an active media and broadcasting company, and its website, mobile apps and events presence remain live and current.

History

According to the network's own published history, Watno Dur Television began in 1999 as a Punjabi programme on Vision TV, Canada's national multi-faith and multicultural specialty channel, where it aired on channel 60. The one-hour programme was, the network says, a unique Punjabi offering on Canadian television at the time, and it built a national audience: Watno Dur quotes Vision Television describing it as "the best viewed show from all of the South Asian shows aired on the channel," and the network's materials record that it received a Best Viewership Award from Vision TV for 2004. The programme's mix of entertainment and homeland connection — films and music from Punjab, visits to religious and cultural sites, interviews and community features — made it a fixture for a generation of Punjabi-Canadian viewers.

The brand expanded from television into radio and live events during the following decade. Watno Dur Radio launched in December 2008, the network says, airing Monday to Friday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on CINA Radio, the multilingual station serving the Toronto area, and streaming online to listeners worldwide. On the events side, the network says it has organized Teeyan Da Mela every year since 2004 around Mother's Day — a large ladies-only celebration of the Punjabi Teeyan festival — and it also created what it describes as the first Punjabi music awards in Canada, an annual awards night honouring artistic and technical excellence in the community, and Miss Canada Punjaban, a national pageant based on Punjabi tradition, folklore and culture, staged as part of the Miss World Panjaban organization and connected to the cultural organization Sabhyacharak Sathh Punjab.

The operation has continued into the present decade. The organizers of Teeyan Da Mela published a greeting from the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, addressed to attendees of the event's 23rd annual edition, and concert-listing services carry Watno Dur Teeyan Da Mela as a current touring event. Nijjar himself remains active in the region's cultural sector, including as an advisory board member of the Vibrant Brampton festival organization.

Programming and Content

The Watno Dur television programme is built as a one-hour journey back to Punjab. In the network's own description, an episode delivers full-scale entertainment in the form of current affairs, religious visits, exclusive previews, "classical glimpses" of Punjabi heritage, interviews, live performances and special features — taking viewers, as the network puts it, "to the lush green fields of Punjab" and back to their days at home in India. The programme regularly involves individuals, businesspeople, artists and new talent from the community, which doubles as a way of serving the local sponsors who support it.

Watno Dur Radio applies the same formula to the weekday noon hour: Punjabi music ranging from traditional folk to current hits, news and talk aimed at the Punjabi community in the Greater Toronto Area and, through online platforms, at listeners worldwide. The network's mobile apps describe the combined offer as radio broadcasts with music, news and talk shows, television programming including drama series, cultural shows, religious programming and news from Punjab, and live coverage of significant events, festivals and celebrations from Punjab. Community engagement is part of the format as well: interactive sessions, interviews with prominent personalities and community events that let audience members share their own stories.

Audience and Reach

Watno Dur's audience is the Punjabi diaspora in Canada — one of the country's largest South Asian communities, concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area communities of Mississauga and Brampton and in metropolitan areas across the country. Its television programme's national carriage on Vision TV gave it a countrywide footprint beyond the GTA, and the network describes the show, in its own words, as "the highest viewed television series amongst the entire South-Asian community all across Canada" — a claim presented here as the network's own characterization rather than an independently measured rating; no audited audience figures for the programme are published.

The events portfolio gives the brand a physical reach to match. Teeyan Da Mela has run for more than two decades as one of the largest Punjabi women's celebrations in Canada, drawing audiences to major Mississauga venues such as the Paramount Fine Foods Centre, and its published greetings from the Prime Minister of Canada reflect the event's standing in the community calendar. Through its apps and online radio streams, the network also reaches Punjabi listeners and viewers outside Canada.

Digital Presence

The network's home online is watnodur.com, which presents its television and radio services, its events — Teeyan Da Mela, the award night and Miss Canada Punjaban — and a biography of founder Sukhi Nijjar, along with the company's Mississauga address and contact numbers. Watno Dur also distributes its content through mobile applications: the Watno Dur app is available for iPhone and iPad through the Apple App Store ecosystem and for Android devices, presenting the service as a combined radio and TV network with live event coverage and community programming. Business directories list Watno Dur Network as an active media and news company in Mississauga with regular office hours, and the Teeyan Da Mela event maintains its own web presence and ticketing listings.

Ownership and Organisation

Watno Dur was founded by Sukhi Nijjar, who remains its central figure. Originally from Jalandhar, Punjab, Nijjar began his Canadian media career as a radio host, and that work led to the creation of Watno Dur as a multicultural media and events company. A writer and lyricist himself, he is the programme's public face and host persona — known, according to his Vibrant Brampton advisory-board biography, for his informal style, his command of Punjabi language and literature, and his sense of humour — and he has promoted Punjabi culture through concerts, stage shows and community programmes across North America. That biography also notes that he has received numerous Canadian awards and has been honoured by the Prime Minister of Canada and other dignitaries for his contributions to the community. The network operates from its Mississauga office with published weekday and Saturday hours.
