About Western Grocer
Western Grocer
Overview
Western Grocer is a bimonthly trade magazine serving the grocery industry of Western Canada. Published by Mercury Publications Limited of Winnipeg, Manitoba, it covers grocery retailing and its allied non-food and institutional trades across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, as well as Northern Canada and northwestern Ontario. Each issue mixes market news, store profiles, category features and event coverage, and the magazine's website carries industry news releases and a complete archive of recent issues.
The magazine describes itself as one of Canada's oldest trade publications, and dates its service as a voice for the western grocery industry to 1916. It is edited and published by Frank Yeo, whose name has headed the masthead for decades, and it sits at the centre of a small Winnipeg-based stable of trade titles covering convenience stores, hotels, restaurants, food processing and the bar and beverage business.
History
Western Grocer's own website dates the magazine to 1916, and its volume numbering tells the same story of longevity: the November/December 2020 issue was numbered Volume 106, and the November/December 2023 issue Volume 109. Its media kits use the line "Serving the grocery industry for over 100 years," a claim the magazine itself makes and which is presented here as its own dating rather than an independently documented founding record. What is certain from the surviving record is an unbroken modern run of bimonthly print issues, published six times a year from Winnipeg under Mercury Publications Limited, with the magazine's mastheads documenting its moves within the city — from 1740 Wellington Avenue in 2014, to 1313 Border Street, Unit 16, through the early 2020s, and then to its current home at 675 Berry Street, Unit L.
Through those decades the magazine has remained a family-scale independent operation in an industry of consolidating chains. Frank Yeo has served as publisher and editor throughout the modern era, signing the "Publisher's Perspective" column in each issue, with Robin Bradley as associate publisher and national accounts manager and Melanie Houssin as western account manager. Its mastheads over the years show a contributor bench drawn from the West — writers such as Robin Brunet, Alex Van Tol, Sue Nichols and Ken Kwong appeared in its pages in the 2010s — matching the magazine's long-standing pitch that its editorial is focused on western trends and written in the West. Mercury's stable has shifted a little over time: a 2014 masthead listed Votre Dépanneur and Commerce & Industry Magazine among its associated publications, titles no longer carried on the current list. The magazine has kept its print form — a full-colour bimonthly of departments and features — while adding a website that posts the complete text and covers of every issue; the full 2026 run, from January/February through September/October, is published there.
Content and Coverage
A typical issue is built around standing departments: Market Update, a survey of western grocery business news; a Calendar of Events; Category Management features on merchandising and product categories; store and company profiles; and closing departments such as In the Bag and Taking Stock, under Yeo's Publisher's Perspective column. The January/February 2022 issue gives the flavour: a health-and-wellness special update on the growth of plant-based foods, a preview of the grocery industry's return to in-person gathering at GSF West 2022, a store-design feature, a retirement notice for a long-serving Associated Grocers executive, tips for maximizing impulse purchases, and a profile of ColdStar Solutions' role keeping Vancouver Island grocery shelves stocked. The September/October 2026 issue led its market coverage with the Pattison Food Group's arrival on DoorDash — bringing Save-On-Foods and five additional banners onto the delivery platform with in-store pricing — and Calgary Co-op's appointment of a new chief executive, Andrew Clarke.
The website extends the magazine between issues with industry news releases and features: October 2026 postings included Heinz's expansion into the Canadian soup aisle, SIAL Canada's announcement of Italy as country of honour for its 2027 Toronto edition, nominations opening for the Santa Cause 2026 charity program, and Bimbo Canada's sweep of 2026 ENERGY STAR industry awards. Article features in the autumn of 2026 covered wellness merchandising ("Making Wellness Easier to Shop"), holiday-season store presentation ("Deck the Aisles"), loyalty programs driven by artificial intelligence, the cost to Canadians of Ottawa's tariff war, and dairy supply management — the working concerns of western food retailers. Event coverage is a staple: the magazine reports from the industry's trade shows, including Grocery Innovations Canada, where it has covered the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers' Master Merchandiser and Merchandising Excellence awards. The magazine is also a media partner to the industry's institutions; its 2024 media kit lists partnerships with the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, the Retail Council of Canada's Grand Prix program, SIAL, FMI, IDDBA, the Canadian Health Food Association and Fair Trade Canada.
Audience and Reach
By its own masthead description, Western Grocer's readership spans the whole western grocery trade: distributors, brokers, manufacturers, wholesalers, independent grocers, food processors, bakeries, supermarkets, convenience stores, principal food service outlets, food researchers and consultants, government and co-operatives in the four western provinces, Northern Canada and the Northwest Ontario area. Its 2024 media kit claims the magazine reaches every independent, chain and mass merchant in western Canada and head-office readers in eastern Canada, and bills it as the highest circulation in western Canada — the publisher's own claims, presented as such; no independently audited circulation figure is published, and none is asserted here. Subscriptions are priced in the masthead at $45 for one year, $63 for two years and $93 for three years, with single copies at $5.
Digital Presence
Westerngrocer.com carries the magazine's current and past issues in full — cover-to-cover PDFs and article pages going back years, with the complete 2026 bimonthly run posted on schedule — alongside a news-release wire organized by month and an archive of feature articles running to dozens of pages. The site functions as the magazine's public archive and between-issues news service, and it is the channel through which the print issues reach readers beyond the mailing list; the September/October 2026 issue was posted in September 2026.
