About WOWtv
WOWtv
Overview
WOWtv is a Canadian Chinese-language specialty television channel owned by the Canadian Chinese Media Network (CCMN). Broadcasting around the clock in Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese, it mixes programming acquired from foreign sources with locally produced Canadian content, and it is distributed nationally by television service providers — in the 700s channel range on both Rogers and Bell systems in recent lineups. WOWtv operates as an exempt Category B service, the CRTC's former classification for optional specialty channels carried at providers' discretion rather than by regulatory right, and it has been on the air since 2009, making it one of the longer-lived entrants in Canada's crowded Chinese-language television market.
The channel is headquartered in Markham, Ontario, in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area's Chinese-Canadian community, having moved there from its original studios in Toronto's Agincourt neighbourhood. Its schedule is built for the everyday viewing of Chinese-speaking households: entertainment series, films, variety and news programming drawn largely from Asia, combined with Canadian-produced material for local audiences. The Vietnamese-language component of the schedule sets it apart from purely Chinese services and reflects the multilingual design CCMN gave the channel from launch. WOWtv is a television service first: it is watched through cable and IPTV subscriptions, and its own website has never been its main shop window — a point its current web presence, discussed below, makes plainly.
History
WOWtv launched on 29 April 2009, carried exclusively by Rogers Cable. The launch made CCMN a new entrant in a market then dominated by the Fairchild Group's services, and the company promoted the channel as Canada's first 24-hour digital Chinese television station — a claim from its own launch-era material, presented here as such. The channel's multilingual design was there from the start: programming in Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese, with the company's early profile stating that more than half of the schedule was produced by WOWtv itself and describing a production team of 100 television professionals. Those figures are the company's own launch-period descriptions and are not independently audited, but the strategy they describe — a locally producing channel rather than a pure relay of overseas feeds — is consistent with the local programming the channel has carried.
Expansion came quickly. On 2 December 2009 WOWtv launched an HD simulcast, WOWtv HD, again on Rogers, an event trade publication Cartt.ca headlined as the launch of an all-HD Chinese channel. In June 2010 the HD feed joined Bell Fibe TV, taking the channel beyond a single distributor. On 25 September 2012 WOWtv launched a western feed for Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton via Telus Optik TV, giving it a genuinely national footprint across the three largest Chinese-Canadian population centres and Alberta's two big cities. At some point in its development the operation moved its head office from the original Agincourt studios in Toronto to Markham. The channel has continued in service since: television listings and provider channel lineups compiled in 2025 and 2026 still carry WOWtv and WOWtv HD, and no announcement of a closure or sale has been published.
Programming and Content
WOWtv's schedule is a general-entertainment mix in three languages. The Cantonese and Mandarin streams carry the weight of the service: drama series, films, variety programmes, music and entertainment news sourced predominantly from producers in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, supplemented by programmes produced in Canada for the local Chinese-speaking audience. News and information programming forms part of the mix — CCMN's own descriptions of the channel have consistently paired "entertainment programs" with "up-to-the-minute global news" — and local Canadian productions address the community life of Chinese Canadians in the cities the channel serves. The Vietnamese-language block programming extends the same model to Vietnamese-speaking viewers, an unusual breadth for a single ethnic specialty service and one recorded in both the channel's reference profiles and Bell's published channel data, which lists WOWtv's languages as Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese.
Because WOWtv is an exempt service assembled largely from acquired and locally produced blocks rather than a network with a publicised programme brand, few individual titles are documented in public sources; its identity rests on the schedule as a whole — a continuous, around-the-clock flow of Chinese-language entertainment with Canadian content woven in — rather than on flagship shows. Viewers encounter it as a channel, in the traditional sense, within their provider's international package.
Audience and Reach
The potential audience is large and concentrated. Statistics Canada's 2021 Census counted 530,945 people who predominantly speak Mandarin at home and 393,430 who predominantly speak Yue (Cantonese), with Vietnamese spoken predominantly at home by roughly 120,000 more; Mandarin is the leading non-official home language in both Toronto and Vancouver, the two metropolitan areas where Chinese Canadians are most numerous. WOWtv's distribution follows that geography: launched in Toronto, extended west to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, and carried nationally by major distributors, it is available in essentially every market where its language communities are concentrated.
No ratings, subscriber counts or audience measurements for WOWtv are published, and none are claimed here. What can be said from the record is that the channel has held carriage on Canada's largest television distributors — Rogers, Bell and Telus — across more than a decade and a half of operation, and remains listed in current provider lineups, which places it among the established fixtures of Canada's Chinese-language television offering rather than a transient entrant.
Digital Presence
WOWtv's digital presence is modest, and honesty requires saying so. Its website, wowtv.ca, when checked in October 2026, displayed a "Launching Soon" placeholder page under a 2025 Wow TV copyright line, offering an email sign-up for updates rather than programme information — the site of a channel whose life is on television screens rather than online. Reference sources have historically listed the channel as streaming via Ustream, an early web-video platform, reflecting CCMN's launch-era emphasis on delivering its signal across cable, satellite, IPTV, streaming and mobile platforms. For current programme times, viewers rely on their television provider's electronic guide; online TV-listing services were still publishing a WOWTV HDTV schedule in October 2026. The channel shares its name with unrelated services abroad, including a Singapore streaming operation and Korea's WOW-TV; neither has any connection to CCMN's Canadian channel.
Ownership and Organisation
WOWtv is owned by the Canadian Chinese Media Network (CCMN), the Markham-based company that created it. CCMN describes itself as the first Chinese media network in Canada to build its television business on multi-platform technology, distributing by conventional cable and satellite, IPTV, online streaming and mobile — a description from the company's own profile, dating from its launch period. The network's sole documented channel is WOWtv itself, in standard and high definition, and the company operates from the same Markham base to which the channel's head office moved from Agincourt. Beyond the network's own descriptions, little corporate detail is public: CCMN does not publish a masthead, executive list or financial information, and no acquisition, partnership or change of ownership involving the channel has been reported since its launch-era expansion.
Contact and Availability
WOWtv is available through television service providers in Canada, including Rogers — where current channel listings place WOWtv HD at channel 758 — Bell Fibe TV, where published lineups list WOWtv at channel 710, and historically Telus Optik TV in western Canada; channel positions vary by region and package, and the channel is typically offered within Chinese-language or international theme packages. The channel broadcasts in Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese from its headquarters in Markham, Ontario. Its website, wowtv.ca, currently invites visitors to join an email list for updates ahead of a relaunch. Viewers should consult their provider's channel guide for the current position and schedule of WOWtv and WOWtv HD in their area.
