About Canal 10 Córdoba

Canal 10 Córdoba

Canal 10 Córdoba is the public university television station of the city of Córdoba, Argentina, owned by the Servicios de Radio y Televisión, SRT, of the National University of Córdoba. Launched on 11 May 1962, it was the second television channel created in Córdoba, and it remains the principal public medium of the Argentine interior. Together with Radio Universidad AM 580 and FM 102.3, it forms the university multimedia group known as Multimedio SRT, whose audience is distributed across six provinces. Its news operation is branded Cba24n, also the name of its digital portal and of a pioneering twenty-four-hour digital news channel, the first of its kind in the Argentine interior.

Canal 10 represents a model of television rare in Latin America: a major city channel owned by a public university, governed as a university service, and committed by statute and tradition to education, culture and plural journalism. Its history runs from the licensing constraints of 1958 through the dictatorship years, the defence against privatisation in the 1990s and the digital expansion of the 2010s, and it is inseparable from the history of the university that owns it, the oldest in Argentina.

Overview

Canal 10 is a free-to-air channel broadcasting from Córdoba on analogue channel 10, call sign LV 80 TV, and on digital terrestrial television at 30.1. It combines relayed programming from national public signals, including Televisión Pública and Canal Encuentro, with a substantial block of its own production: news, current affairs, culture, education and live event coverage. Since 2009 the channel has increased its own news production from two and a half hours to six hours daily, a significant figure for a public station.

The station is part of a five-part media group: Canal 10, Radio Universidad, the FM station now branded Más que música, the digital channel Canal U and the Cba24n portal. The SRT describes its position as the main public media group of the Argentine interior, with the largest local production of any Córdoba medium. Its headquarters and studios are in Córdoba, where it also maintains the audiovisual documentation centre created in 1994 to safeguard its news archive, one of Argentina's earliest public television preservation initiatives.

History

The SRT's broadcasting history began with radio: Radio Universidad began transmitting on 27 April 1958 on AM 580, quickly becoming one of the most listened-to stations in the centre of the country. The legal basis of the university media rests on Decree Law 5753 of 1958. Canal 10 itself dates from 1962: in May of that year it began transmissions, at a time when the legislation then in force obliged the university to enter into association arrangements in order to hold its own licences. An FM station, 102.3, followed on 28 May 1979, completing the classic structure of the university multimedio.

The university behind the channel, the National University of Córdoba, was founded in 1613 and is Argentina's oldest university and one of the earliest in the Americas, the institution whose 1918 University Reform reshaped higher education across Latin America. Canal 10 therefore carries an institutional weight unusual among regional channels: it is the television voice of La Docta, the learned city, and its public service obligations are understood as an extension of the university's mission of teaching, research and outreach.

Ownership and governance

Canal 10 is owned by the Servicios de Radio y Televisión de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, a company whose shareholding belongs 99.5 percent to the university and 0.5 percent to the Municipality of Bell Ville. The SRT's staff numbers around 240 workers across its five media. Attempts to privatise the university media arose during the 1990s under President Carlos Menem; the university's Superior Council pronounced itself in favour of keeping the media within the university's orbit, and they remained public.

University ownership has shaped the channel's journalism and its conflicts. In February 2003 the provincial governor José Manuel de la Sota pressed the SRT authorities to remove journalist Jorge Martínez from the news programme Crónica 10, advising the university media to lower the volume of negative information about his government and warning over advertising payments; the journalist was reinstated the following day after a strong reaction, an episode documented by international press freedom organisations. Such episodes form part of the channel's institutional memory and of its self-understanding as a plural medium answerable to a university rather than to a government of the day.

Programming

Canal 10's schedule combines national public programming with local production. It retransmits educational and journalistic content from Televisión Pública and Canal Encuentro, and produces its own news, magazine and cultural programming in Córdoba. Programmes documented in SRT listings include the newscast now branded Ahora Noticias, the current affairs format Fuerte y claro and the magazine Siempre al 10. Its cultural and university programming draws directly on the intellectual life of its owner: lectures, concerts, science and the debates of a great public university become television content.

Live event and civic coverage is a particular strength. Among the channel's most notable recent coverages, SRT records cite its transmissions of the Menéndez I and II trials, the Córdoba trials of repressors of the last dictatorship, coverage that earned the recognition of the Córdoba City Council. For a university channel, broadcasting the trials through which Argentine society judged its own past was a defining public service act, and the recordings form part of the historical archive the university preserves.

The Cba24n news brand

The SRT's news identity is Cba24n. The name fronts the group's digital news portal, cba24n.com.ar, and a digital news channel that the university created as the first news channel of the Argentine interior transmitted on open digital television, broadcasting twenty-four hours a day. The digital channel carried more than fourteen hours of locally produced information daily, with segments of politics, crime, sport and entertainment and a multimedia block, and it incorporated university students who had won internships, joining professional journalism to the university's teaching function.

On the main channel, the news operation expanded notably from 2009, growing from two and a half to six hours of own news services. The Cba24n brand unified the group's journalism across television and the web at the moment when provincial audiences were moving online, giving the university medium a digital news presence earlier than most interior competitors. The portal listed in current directories as the station's website continues that strategy.

Distribution and reach

Canal 10's audience is distributed across six provinces, according to the SRT's institutional records, a reach achieved through its Córdoba transmitter and a repeater network modernised in a plan that in 2010 brought new equipment into service in San Francisco, Villa Nueva, Santa Rosa de Calamuchita and Bell Ville, among other interior localities. It broadcasts digitally at 30.1, with its sister Canal U at 30.2 carrying documentaries and series since its launch on 9 April 2018.

The station participates actively in the Federal Council of Public Television, the body of Argentine public channels that played an important role in the discussions leading to the Audiovisual Communication Services Law. Through that council and through the university networks of Latin America, Canal 10's experience as a university broadcaster circulates as a reference for public media policy in the region.

Significance

Canal 10 Córdoba is significant as Argentina's leading university television station and the anchor of public media in the interior. Where Buenos Aires has the national public broadcaster, Córdoba has a channel owned by its four-centuries-old university, defended against privatisation by that university's governing bodies, and sustained as a plural, educational and journalistic service. Its archive centre, its trial broadcasts and its student-integrated news channel show the range of what a university medium can do.

The debates about its future that recur in Córdoba, concerning funding, sustainability and the renewal of its direction, are themselves evidence of its importance: the SRT is treated locally as an icon of the city's culture and as the communication company with the most local production in the province. Launched on 11 May 1962, Canal 10 remains what it was created to be, the television service of the National University of Córdoba, speaking from the interior of the country in a voice no commercial or national channel can reproduce.

Digital presence

The group's digital presence is centred on the Cba24n portal, which carries the news output of the SRT's television and radio services, and on Canal U, the digital university signal launched in 2018 with documentaries and series at 30.2. Together they extended a media group founded on AM radio in 1958 into the connected environment without abandoning its broadcast base.

That continuity across technologies is the channel's defining pattern. From the constraints of a 1958 decree law to digital multiplexes and a twenty-four-hour online news brand, Canal 10 has repeatedly converted new technical possibilities into new forms of the same public mission: education, culture and honest journalism from Córdoba, for the centre of Argentina and beyond.
