About Canal 10 Tucumán

Canal 10 Tucumán

Canal 10 Tucumán is a free-to-air television station in the province of Tucumán in north-western Argentina, owned and run by the National University of Tucumán together with the provincial government. Broadcasting under the call sign LW 83 TV from studios in Yerba Buena, it went on air on 9 July 1966 and for seventeen years was the only open television channel in the province. It remains one of only two free-to-air channels in Tucumán. A university-owned generalist station is a rarity in Argentine television, and Canal 10's history, from cultural programming at its foundation to its present role relaying El Trece with its own local production, reflects the distinctive place of the National University of Tucumán, the largest university in Argentina's north-west, in the cultural life of the province.

The station covers almost all of Tucumán Province through its transmitter and repeaters, according to the directory record on which this profile is based, and its address on Avenida Aconquija in Yerba Buena, the residential city at the foot of the Sierra de San Javier adjoining the provincial capital, is a local landmark. Its transmitter is located at Villa Nougués, in the hills above the city, a site chosen to throw its signal across the densely populated central corridor of Argentina's smallest and most densely settled province.

Overview

Canal 10 broadcasts on analogue VHF channel 10 and digital UHF channel 27, under ENACOM licence. Its owner is recorded as the National University of Tucumán and the Government of Tucumán, through Televisora de Tucumán S.A.P.E.M., a state-participation company. Its affiliation is with El Trece of Buenos Aires, whose programming it has principally rebroadcast since the 1990s. Headquarters and studios are in Yerba Buena, while the audience is the whole province: Greater San Miguel de Tucumán, the largest urban area in northern Argentina, and the sugar, citrus and industrial towns of the provincial interior.

History

Channel 10 went on air on 9 July 1966, a date with deliberate symbolism, since 9 July is Argentine Independence Day, proclaimed in Tucumán itself in 1816; local press retrospectives have marked the anniversary as the moment television made its first appearance in Tucumán. At first the station broadcast cultural programming, in keeping with its university character, but it soon turned into a more commercial station, as the economics of television asserted themselves even under academic ownership. Colour transmission began in 1980. From 1966 until 1983, when channel 8 was founded, Canal 10 was the only free-to-air channel in the province, which made it for a generation the single window through which Tucumán watched television and saw itself on screen.

Since the 1990s, Canal 10 has primarily rebroadcast the national programming of El Trece in Buenos Aires. That alignment gave the province a stable supply of one of the country's two leading networks and settled the station into the hybrid model it still follows: network entertainment and national news combined with university and local production in its own windows of the schedule.

Ownership

The station is owned and run by the National University of Tucumán, with the provincial government participating through Televisora de Tucumán S.A.P.E.M. The university, founded in 1914 and the largest in Argentina's north-west, has long treated media as part of its cultural mission in the province, and Canal 10 is the most visible expression of that mission. University ownership sets the station apart from both the commercial groups and the provincial state broadcasters that dominate Argentine interior television: its licence-holder is an autonomous academic institution, which shapes a public-service character without the station being a government channel in the usual sense.

Programming

The schedule combines El Trece's national output with local programmes made in Yerba Buena. Documented local productions include the morning news programme La Mañana es Noticia, broadcast Monday to Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m.; the news service TV Prensa, with weekday editions at 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.; La Santa Misa, a religious broadcast on Sundays at 11 a.m.; Esto es Noticia on Saturdays at 8 p.m.; and Un Día a la Semana on Saturdays at 2 p.m. Programmes that featured in the past include Canal 10 Informa, Sábados para Todos, Deportivo 10 for sport, and Ciudadanos for current affairs. The pattern is consistent across the decades: news at the centre, flanked by magazine, sport, current affairs and community formats, with the network supplying fiction and entertainment.

News operation

News is the backbone of the station's own production. TV Prensa is its principal news service, with midday and evening weekday editions, while La Mañana es Noticia opens the day and Esto es Noticia reviews the week on Saturday evenings. The newsroom covers a province of exceptional political and economic intensity: Tucumán is the historic centre of the Argentine sugar industry, a major citrus producer and the political heart of the north-west, and its public affairs generate a volume of news out of proportion to the province's small territory. The station's own news site carries that coverage continuously online, with provincial politics, police news, health and university affairs prominent in its daily output.

Competition gives the operation definition: since 1983 Canal 10 has shared the province's open television with channel 8, today's elocho TV, and the two stations offer Tucumán viewers alternative local editions built around different national networks, El Trece on channel 10 and Telefe programming on channel 8.

Distribution and reach

The station's studios are at Avenida Aconquija 729 in Yerba Buena, and its transmitter at Villa Nougués overlooks the metropolitan area from the sierra, a classic Argentine arrangement in which hillside transmitter sites serve cities built on the plain below. Through repeaters, the service covers almost all of Tucumán Province, as the directory record notes, an achievable ambition in the country's smallest province. Its digital terrestrial assignment is UHF channel 27. Cable and satellite carriage complete its distribution, and its signal is the El Trece service for the province's cable systems as well as for open-signal viewers.

Digital presence

The station operates a news website under the Canal 10 name, canal10tucuman.com.ar in reference listings and its current news portal, publishing provincial news continuously in the manner of a digital newspaper. The site extends the television newsroom into text, photography and video, and records the daily agenda of the province, from government and courts to sport and university life. For a university station, that digital newsroom also functions as a training and visibility platform within the region's media ecosystem.

Audience and significance

Canal 10's significance in Tucumán is foundational. It brought television to the province in 1966, held a monopoly of open broadcasting for seventeen years, and formed the viewing habits of generations. Its university ownership connects it to the institution that has educated the province's professional class since 1914, and its survival as a generalist station into the digital era makes it one of the most distinctive ownership cases in Argentine television: a channel whose licence belongs to a university, run from a garden suburb, serving a whole province.

Canal 10 today

Today Canal 10 continues from Yerba Buena as Tucumán's El Trece station, owned by its university and the provincial state company, producing TV Prensa and its morning and weekly news formats, and covering almost the entire province. In a national system dominated by Buenos Aires groups, it remains a living example of the older Argentine idea that a university should also be a broadcaster, an idea it has practised continuously since 9 July 1966.

The station's endurance also reflects the character of its market. Tucumán packs more than a million people into Argentina's smallest province, so a single channel with provincial coverage addresses a population comparable to that of much larger territories. In that compact, intense market, Canal 10's blend of university ownership, El Trece programming and its own Yerba Buena newsroom has kept it central to provincial life for six decades, and its digital news operation now carries that centrality to readers far beyond the reach of its Villa Nougués transmitter.
