About Australasian Dentist

Australasian Dentist

Overview

Australasian Dentist is an Australian trade magazine for dental professionals, published by Great Australian Publishing. It describes itself on its covers as "Australia's leading clinical, business, technology & lifestyle magazine for the dental professional", and its editorial mix follows that billing: peer-written clinical case studies and technique articles sit alongside practice business coverage, product news, industry events and lifestyle material aimed at dentists in private practice. The magazine appears in print five times a year and is supported by a news website at australasiandentist.com.au and digital editions of each issue.

The magazine is edited by its founder, Amos Lang, who remains managing editor more than two decades after launching the title. Although this directory lists the magazine against Sydney, the publisher is in fact based at Black Rock, a bayside suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, and all editorial, advertising and subscription enquiries are handled from there; the title's market is national rather than tied to either city.

History

According to the publisher's own account, Australasian Dentist has been published since 2002. Amos Lang is credited in the magazine's masthead as its "Founding editor & publisher", and he also founded the publisher's companion title, Implant Dentistry Today. The magazine has maintained a consistent identity since then: a large-format, advertising-supported trade title distributed to dental practices, with sequential issue numbering that reached No. 96 in November–December 2022, No. 107 in March–April 2025, No. 110 in September–October 2025 and No. 111 in November–December 2025.

Great Australian Publishing is an independent, single-purpose publisher: its public materials list Australasian Dentist and Implant Dentistry Today as its titles, and Lang combines the roles of publisher and managing editor, an arrangement unchanged across the issues examined from 2022 to 2025. The magazine's longevity in a small, competitive trade market rests on that continuity and on a contributor model built around practising clinicians rather than staff writers.

Content and Coverage

A typical issue runs to well over 120 pages and is organised into recognisable departments. News, People and Events sections report movements in the profession and the industry; a Cover Story and Profile anchor the feature well; Innovations and Products cover new equipment, materials and software; and the Clinical section — the largest in the book — carries case reports and technique articles written by dentists, specialists and academics. The September–October 2025 issue (No. 110), for example, carried clinical features on aligner treatment of transverse malocclusion, orthodontics for general dentists, bone grafting with EthOss, full-arch rehabilitation using Straumann implant systems, single-visit CEREC restorations, zircona aesthetics and implant maintenance, together with features on infection control and sterilisation, a "Dentistry Around the World" survey and a book review.

Standing elements recur from issue to issue: a Columnists section (with features by Danny Chan and Jade Richardson), a Labs section for dental laboratories, a radiation-safety column titled "Gamma Talk", an Artificial Intelligence column, Acquisitions and Finance pages tracking practice sales and money matters, a light closing column called "Reality Bites", and a long-running series titled "Is there life after Dental Practice ownership", which addresses succession and retirement. Clinical oversight is provided by named clinical editors — in recent issues Dr Michael Stubbs, an oral medicine specialist associated with La Trobe University, and Dr Geoffrey Hall, a specialist orthodontist — whose credentials are printed in the masthead.

Aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry forms a visible strand of the coverage, reflecting its growth in general practice: the March–April 2025 issue (No. 107) carried features on cosmetic injecting and the science of skin boosters alongside its restorative and implant clinical program, and the magazine regularly covers orthodontics for general practitioners, aligner therapy and whitening — including a 2025 feature arguing that dentistry is losing teeth-whitening work to salons, spas and online sellers because it has not prioritised the service. Practice lifestyle content appears through the Finance, Marketing and practice-ownership columns, and through commentators such as Matt Hopcraft, whose "Dental as Anything" pieces on public dentistry and children's oral health the website republishes.

The website mirrors this structure, publishing clinical articles, columnist pieces and news between issues, including a six-part series by Danny Chan on the winners of the Australian Dental Awards 2025, and carries an events calendar for the profession — its listings in October 2026 ran to events such as the ADAQ Annual Clinic Day scheduled for 6 November 2026.

Audience and Reach

The magazine is written for dentists and the wider dental profession in Australia: practice owners, associates, specialists and the clinical team around them. The publisher states that the title is published bi-monthly, with five issues per year starting in late February, and an annual subscription has been priced at $99 in recent issues.

On circulation, the magazine states in its own pages that it has been independently audited under the AMAA's CAB Total Distribution Audit, and prints a figure of 12,835 for the audit period to June 2020. The publisher further claims the highest circulation and readership figures in its industry; that is the publisher's own claim, and the audited figure it rests on is dated June 2020, so neither should be read as a current, independently verified number. No more recent audited circulation was found in the sources consulted.

Digital Presence

The magazine's website, australasiandentist.com.au, is an active news and article service rather than a simple subscription page: it organises content into Featured, Latest and Clinical streams, publishes its columnists online, and lists upcoming professional events — events scheduled for November 2026 were listed when the site was reviewed in October 2026, and new material was being posted through 2026. Full issues are also published as digital editions (hosted on an e-magazine platform), so the print product — an A4-format magazine, 210 × 297 mm per the publisher's advertising specifications — can be read page-for-page online; the digital archive on that platform runs back at least to issue No. 96 (November–December 2022) and includes issues No. 110 (September–October 2025) and No. 111 (November–December 2025). The 2024 media kit and subscription offers are published on the website, and the title uses its site and social channels to promote each new issue.

Ownership and Organisation

Australasian Dentist is owned and published by Great Australian Publishing, an independent Australian publisher whose postal address is PO Box 4230, Black Rock, Vic 3193. It is unrelated to the similarly named Australasian Dental Practice, which is published in Sydney by a different company, Main Street Publishing; the two titles are separate businesses serving the same profession.

Within Great Australian Publishing, Amos Lang is both publisher and managing editor, and he is also founding editor and publisher of the company's other title, Implant Dentistry Today. Editorial input comes from the two clinical editors named in the masthead and from a wide bench of contributing clinicians and regular columnists; advertising, editorial and subscription functions are all handled through the same small Black Rock office, as the masthead's single contact point for all enquiries indicates.

Contact and Availability

Subscriptions cost $99 per annum (as printed in 2025 issues) and can be taken out through the magazine's website, australasiandentist.com.au, where current and recent issues are also available as digital editions. Editorial, subscription and mailing enquiries go to Great Australian Publishing, PO Box 4230, Black Rock, Vic 3193, telephone 03 9502 0792; the masthead also lists the email address gapmagazines@gmail.com and a mobile number for advertising enquiries. The magazine is published five times a year and is available to dental professionals throughout Australia.
