About Bejsment

Bejsment

Overview

Bejsment (bejsment.com) is a Polish-language online portal serving the Polish community in Canada. Launched on 12 April 2012, it is operated by Wiadomosci Press Inc. and is based in Mississauga, Ontario, in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), home to the largest concentration of Polish Canadians. The portal was created as the online arm of Wiadomości ("News"), the free Polish-language weekly newspaper that the same publisher has produced for the GTA since 1997, and it combines original news and commentary with what it describes as the largest classified-advertising database in Canada's Polish-language media.

Bejsment publishes current news from Canada alongside material about Poland and the wider world, interviews, opinion writing and practical advice for Polish speakers living in Canada. It is written entirely in Polish and aimed squarely at the Polish-Canadian community — immigrants, their families, and Poles considering or completing a move to Canada.

History

Bejsment's roots lie in print. Wiadomości, a free Polish-language tabloid weekly, appeared on the Canadian market in 1997, published every Thursday and distributed through more than 100 distribution points across the Golden Horseshoe region of southern Ontario, with its editorial office in Mississauga — a city often described in Polish-Canadian media as the most Polish city in Canada. The weekly built its position as both a news source and a popular advertising and classifieds platform for the community; reference sources describe a typical print run in the range of 14,000 to 16,000 copies, distributed free.

The print product behind the portal is substantial: Wiadomości is a tabloid-format weekly running, according to reference descriptions, to between 60 and 116 pages per issue, published every Thursday and distributed free of charge. It operates in a competitive local market — Polish readers in the Toronto area have historically had a choice of around six Polish-language periodicals — yet the weekly endured from 1997 onward, giving its publisher the audience, advertiser base and newsroom from which a digital portal could be built.

On 12 April 2012, Wiadomosci Press Inc. took the title online with the launch of Bejsment.com, founded and edited by Krzysztof Bednarczyk, the editor-in-chief of Wiadomości. The portal was designed to give the weekly's journalism a daily, searchable digital home and to move its best-known service — classified advertising — onto the web. Since then the two products have operated as one media operation: articles written by journalists associated with the weekly appear on the portal, and classified ads placed with the publisher can run simultaneously in the print weekly, on Bejsment and on the Polish-language Radio 7.

The name itself is a piece of Polonian wordplay: "bejsment" is the English word "basement" written in Polish phonetic spelling, giving the portal a recognizably community, slightly tongue-in-cheek identity.

Content and Coverage

Bejsment's editorial content falls into several strands. It carries current news from Canada — federal and Ontario politics, immigration and settlement matters, the economy and community events — together with news from Poland and international stories of interest to Polish readers. Around the news sit commentary and opinion pieces, interviews, and practical guidance: articles explaining Canadian institutions, procedures and everyday life for newcomers and established residents alike. The site combines staff editorial material with contributions from bloggers.

A searchable database of the portal's published articles runs to more than 20,000 items, according to reference descriptions of the site. That archive has given Bejsment a reach beyond its own readership: its articles are frequently picked up and cited by media in Poland — national outlets such as wpolityce.pl, rynekaptek.pl and sport.pl have drawn on its reporting — and by Polish diaspora media in other countries, including Ireland's ng24.ie. The documented examples of that pickup show the range of its Canadian coverage: a community dispute over sex education in Ontario schools, a change limiting access to free prescription medicines in Ontario, and sports coverage — the kind of everyday Canadian stories that Polish readers abroad rely on Bejsment to surface.

Beyond publishing, the portal plays an organizational role in community life: reference accounts of Wiadomości's web operation note that Bejsment takes part in charity campaigns and sponsors artistic events for the Polish community — a function consistent with its publisher's position as one of the community's central media institutions, and one that keeps the brand present at the concerts, fundraising drives and cultural occasions its pages also cover.

The portal's second pillar is classified advertising, which Bejsment presents as the largest database of its kind in Polish-Canadian media. Its classified categories include jobs (Praca), buying and selling (Kupno/Sprzedaż), services (Usługi), real estate (Nieruchomości) and personal ads (Towarzyskie). Alongside the classifieds, the portal maintains a business directory of roughly 400 Polish companies in Canada. The classifieds service remains visibly active, with new community ads appearing on its classifieds platform.

Audience and Reach

Bejsment serves primarily the Polish community of the Greater Toronto Area, in a province — Ontario — whose Polish-origin population reference sources on the publisher's weekly put at roughly 523,000 people. Its potential readership also extends to Polish speakers across Canada and, given its Polish-language content about Canadian life, to readers in Poland researching emigration.

The portal has published its own audience figures drawn from Google Analytics: according to those figures, as reported for 2023, the site was used by close to 20,000 unique users generating more than 245,000 page views per month. These are the publisher's own reported statistics for 2023, presented here as such; no independent audit of the portal's audience was available for this profile.

Digital Presence

Bejsment is a digital-native publication: the portal at bejsment.com is the product, with its news archive, blogger contributions and advice content published online only. It also functions as the digital storefront for its publisher's whole media offering — the same classified advertisement can be placed once and appear on the portal, in the print pages of Wiadomości and in announcements on Radio 7 — and the portal has used its own traffic data publicly, publishing analyses of what its readers search for most, a small but telling sign of an operation run on measurable online engagement rather than print-era assumptions. Its classifieds operate through a dedicated classifieds service under the Bejsment name, where community members post and browse ads in the categories listed above, and its business directory gives Polish-Canadian firms a searchable online listing. The portal's content is also amplified through republication, with its articles surfacing on news sites in Poland and in other Polish diaspora media.

Ownership and Organisation

Bejsment is owned and operated by Wiadomosci Press Inc., the Mississauga-based publisher of the Wiadomości weekly. The portal's founder and editor-in-chief is Krzysztof Bednarczyk, who also edits the weekly; content is produced by journalists associated with Wiadomości, supplemented by blogger contributors. The publisher's editorial base is in Mississauga, at the same operation that produces the weekly (listed at 1454 Dundas Street East, Suite 124, Mississauga for the weekly's editorial office).

Contact and Availability

Bejsment is available free of charge online at bejsment.com, in Polish, and is updated on a continuing basis. Its classified-advertising service and its directory of Polish businesses in Canada are accessible through the portal, and advertisers can place classifieds that appear across the publisher's platforms — the Bejsment website, the print edition of Wiadomości and Radio 7. The publisher, Wiadomosci Press Inc., is based in Mississauga, Ontario, serving readers throughout the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
