About Australian Design Review

Australian Design Review

Overview

Australian Design Review (ADR) is an Australian online publication covering architecture, interior design and product design, published by Niche Media from Melbourne. Founded in 2009 as the online home of Niche Media's architecture and design publications, it brings together daily news, project features, interviews, opinion and industry resources for architects, interior designers, product designers and the broader design community. ADR describes itself as "the go-to industry resource for news, events, jobs and features about the architecture, interiors and design disciplines".

Beyond its website coverage, Australian Design Review is closely associated with two of Australian design's best-known professional programs: the Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), the national awards for interior design presented by ADR and Niche Media, and 30UNDER30, the publisher's recognition and mentoring program for architects and designers under thirty. A weekly e-newsletter distributes the site's coverage to subscribers. The site was publishing new editorial content daily in October 2026, including coverage of the 2026 IDEA program and the 2026/2027 30UNDER30 cohort, confirming its position as an active, current voice in Australian design media.

History

Australian Design Review was founded in 2009. As the publication's own About page records, it was created as the online home for Niche Media's architecture and design publications, bringing together content from Architectural Review and inside (interior design review) — the publisher's established print journals for architecture and interiors respectively. The move reflected the industry's shift online: rather than each magazine maintaining a separate web presence, ADR became the shared digital platform for Niche Media's design portfolio, and over time developed its own editorial identity and programs.

The awards activity that now defines much of ADR's public profile predates the website. The Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) are presented by Australian Design Review and Niche Media and have been running for more than two decades — ADR noted in late 2023 that IDEA had reached 21 years — growing into what the publisher positions as the most important annual gathering of Australia's interior design community, culminating in a gala event in Melbourne each year. In 2016 Niche Media also published a Global Architecture and Design Forecast for Australia through ADR. In 2022 the publication launched 30UNDER30, an initiative recognising thirty architects and designers under the age of thirty each year, supported by mentors, judges and practice partners, with a creative retreat for the cohort; the program has run annually since, and the 2026/2027 edition is being staged as a five-year reunion of previous cohorts, mentors and sponsors. More recently ADR has added event and commentary formats including its Pineapple Soup design events and The Podium, a thought-leadership article series launched to carry longer-form industry opinion.

Programming and Content

ADR's editorial coverage is organised principally around interiors and architecture, with product design, people and industry business news woven through. Project coverage documents new Australian work — homes, workplaces, hospitality venues, cultural and educational buildings — such as the Grimshaw-led Twelve Apostles visitor centre on Victoria's Great Ocean Road and Melbourne bathhouse Sense of Self's expansion into Sydney. Its "Studio news" features provide a monthly round-up of appointments, promotions and practice news across Australian architecture and design, a service of record for the professions. Interviews and profiles sit alongside the news: recent coverage has profiled Sydney interiors practice Tom Mark Henry, examined mentorship with Mim Design's Miriam Fanning, and carried product stories from Australian and international makers.

Two recurring strands give the site much of its character. The Podium is ADR's thought-leadership series, carrying opinion pieces by practitioners on subjects such as artificial intelligence in practice and seniors living design. The IDEA and 30UNDER30 programs generate year-round editorial: shortlist announcements, jury profiles, designer presentations and winner coverage, including the annual IDEA Designer of the Year presentations hosted with program sponsors. ADR also maintains practical industry resources, including a jobs board and events listings, and publishes content supplied by its content partners and advisers — organisations engaged to provide expert insight from their respective industries — alongside its staff-written journalism. Sister-magazine content from inside, Niche Media's flagship interior design journal, also appears on the platform, including coverage of each new issue and its annual IDEA winners' edition.

Audience and Reach

Australian Design Review's audience is the Australian architecture and design professions: practising architects, interior designers, product and industrial designers, graduates, and the suppliers, specifiers and design-aware businesses that work with them. Its 30UNDER30 shortlist for 2025/2026 illustrates the breadth of that community — 66 shortlisted practitioners drawn from five states and one territory, spanning interior designers, architects, urban designers, academics and exhibition designers. The scale of the IDEA program likewise indicates the publication's standing: the 2026 awards were judged across 21 categories, and the publisher reported a record number of entries and a sell-out gala for IDEA 2024. Niche Media does not publish independently audited audience figures for ADR, so no specific traffic or circulation claim is made here; the publication's reach is exercised through its website, its weekly newsletter, its social channels and the events and awards programs that convene its readership in person throughout the year.

Digital Presence

Australian Design Review is a digital-native publication: its website, australiandesignreview.com, is updated daily with news, features and resources, and was carrying new content dated October 2026 — including IDEA 2026 coverage and studio news round-ups for August and September 2026 — at the time of writing. A weekly e-newsletter delivers the latest updates to subscribers' inboxes, and the publication maintains an active presence around its awards and mentoring programs, whose announcements, shortlists and events are published on dedicated sections of the site. The platform also hosts an extensive archive reaching back to its 2009 founding, including material drawn from Niche Media's print titles, making it a long-running record of Australian design culture. Events coverage extends the digital presence into physical gatherings, from the IDEA gala and Designer of the Year presentations in Melbourne to the 30UNDER30 creative retreat.

Ownership and Organisation

Australian Design Review is published by Niche Media Pty Ltd, a Melbourne-based specialist publisher located at 15 Paran Place, Glen Iris, in Melbourne's east. Niche Media's owner and publisher is Paul Lidgerwood, who fronts the company's major industry occasions, including the annual IDEA gala. The company's commercial operation has been led by general manager Jillian Hood, and its commercial team works across the publication's advertising, sponsorship and events partnerships.

Editorially, Australian Design Review is led by managing editor Madeleine Swain, who was emceeing IDEA program events on the publication's behalf in 2026. The editorial structure has evolved over the years: Clémence Carayol joined Niche as online editor of ADR and editor of inside magazine in the early 2020s, and Jessica Agoston Cleary served as managing editor of both inside and Australian Design Review during 2024. Within the Niche portfolio, ADR works alongside inside (interior design review), the company's flagship print journal for interior architecture and design — which continues to appear in print and digital editions, including its December/January IDEA winners' edition — a relationship that keeps the website closely tied to the publisher's print and awards activities.
